Despite the obvious bias from the forum I thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the subject. Rock, alternative rock, indie, hard rock, punk, post hardcore, metal (etc.) only. Largely guitar orientated music, you know. No need to get too anal about it. Personally I've always found that Britain has always come in with the heavy hitters, the big bands that make up your top 10 lists, but America triumphs else where in big numbers. If I was to lay out my favourite bands it would be very even I'd say. Thoughts?

The vast majority of my favourite artists are from the UK.
The Beatles The Stones The Kinks The Who Pink Floyd Bowie Oasis The Smiths The Roses Pulp Joy Division The La's The Verve Doves
From the USA, only Bob Dylan would make my list of favourites. R.E.M., Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, The Killers, Nirvana are all great as well but aren't on the same level as the ones mentioned above.
So definitely the UK for me.

America is responsible for Guns n Roses and Aerosmith, and so on. Britain gave the world The Beatles.

I was just thinking about this the other day, how probably more than 90% of the music I listen to is from the UK, and how the best and greatest bands are too. The US gave us Elvis, Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry and all of that, and Nirvana, but the UK gave us the bands SS mentiones, and a lot more. The US has good bands too, sure, but not nearly on the same level. I do like Kings Of Leon and The Killers for example, but even Coldplay, Mumford and Sons and Muse >>>Kings Of Leon and The Killers, in my eyes.

I've always listened to the bands from UK a lot and a very little from US since when I was a teenager.
My most favourite bands/singers are from UK, yet legendary Patti Smith, The National, Cat Power are on top of my music page as well, then followed by Beirut and Beach House.
If there was no Ramones, Mick Jones would have never picked the guitar to learn how to play it. If there was no Patti Smith, Moz and Johnny would have never met each other. If there was no blues/soul music, how would the early Rolling Stones sound like?
Iceland got Sigur Ros and Denmark got some good bands too. My music journey to discover good music will never end and from which contry they're from, is not a big deal.

I never understand why Elvis is seen as being the king of rock 'n' roll. I'd give that title to Chuck Berry as he actually wrote everything he played, influenced some of the greatest bands around and was a great guitarist as well.

The reason Elvis is so well thought of is because he popularized rock 'n roll. Before Elvis, rock 'n roll was, especially to white people, taboo. My suggestion to some of you: read a book. Thanks.

Which book? Well, this is one of my favorite books period... Written by Elvis' friends, and really reveals how crazy and fucking awesome Elvis was. Any book on the history of rock and roll will pay homaage to Elvis, though. God bless.

Before The Beatles became what we know about them now, they played hell of covers of American R&R like Long Tall Sally, Slow Down, Roll Over Beethoven and all that. I can't stand bands like Guns and Roses and Van Halen. They make me sick, but there's a big influence of American music for British music, especially in 50's 60's and we can't deny it.

It's a dead heat.
But just imagine if no records from America were imported into Liverpool via the ships that docked on the Mersey. And there'd be no Beatles.
And that would have left us with Cliff Richard as Britain's musical pioneer. Now we can't be having that!

Tbh I think the argument that The Beatles etc were influenced by American records doesn't really work - the question is which country has in total produced better bands/music. Both have influenced each other in millions of unmeasurable ways so we can only look at the music from both sides, and then it's a walkover for Britain IMO. The wealth of talent and innovation British music has in so many genres is unparalleled - it's even arguable Britain has had the best bands/artists in rock, pop, punk, IDM, EDM, psychedelia, progressive, and indie. Actually I'd say Britain vs The Rest of the World would be a fairer comparison.

So much ignorance in this thread its blowing my mind.
Nevermind the fact that America, specifically African Americans invented about 70% of basis of modern music whether it be rock n' roll, blues, jazz, funk, hip hop.
Yes I get that this says rock bands, but are people forgetting bands like Velvet Underground? Who in four albums did just as much for modern (alternative) music as the Beatles did.

Except this is about from which country your favourite/best bands are. Of course America has invented the basis of a lot of genres that have evolved into modern music as it is now. Is anyone claiming otherwise? It's rather about which country has produced more great bands, and more of your favourites. At least that's how I interpreted this thread.
