I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss seperately in a thread since it always comes up somewhere in other discussions. I personally find it both amusing and disconcerting that a lot of the users on here think of Noel as some kind of super human being (in a rather negative way I must add) who is able to control the minds of everybody around him and who always manipulates people for his own profit. To me, people who really believe that are almost as obsessed with Noel as our Liam... On the other hand, people say how the big ego and the self-confidence image of him is just a thing he plays and deep down he's rather insecure. This thesis is supported by the fact that he seems (or seemed) rather self-conscious on stage as a frontman, especially in contrast to Liam.
In my point of view, Noel's got a quite interesting personality. Many artists (even if Noel himself would say he's an artist) have that, I guess. A very interesting state of his life to analyse it is probably his youth. Apparently he was more of a loner or at least he wasn't someone who needed social company all the time judging by the fact that he sat alone in his room playing the guitar the whole day and night. I wonder what Noel would have become if he hadn't joined Oasis. Is this alleged huge self-confidence solely a result of his success as a soongwriter and the recognition he gained by millions of fans?
Opinions?

You mean he isn't some superhuman kind of Dark Lord with manipulating powers, ready to take you down with his icy stare?
Bummer.

I don't think Noel is a superhuman mind controller but I definitely think he is good at "playing the game" - steering the media narrative in his favor. In that way he is manipulative...but no more so than many celebrities. Liam is the polar opposite - he wears his heart on his sleeve for the media and the public to react however they choose...and we all know how that usually goes.
I think the example you brought up perfectly illustrates the point actually - I don't think Noel was nearly as nervous about being the "frontman" as he made out. He had done it plenty with Oasis and had already done a solo tour in 2006. But he managed people's expectations by acting unsure and humble about it. That way, people were rooting for him rather than critiquing him, and once they saw it, their reaction was, "See, Noel? You did fine! Nothing to worry about." Contrast this with Liam, who let his excitement and confidence about Beady Eye fly freely, saying they could be bigger than Oasis. People who read that sort of stuff couldn't wait to dismiss them. Noel notices this (he even said in interviews that Liam's arrogant comments did Beady Eye no favors) so he goes a different route, one that will get people in his corner.
This is this sort of thing that many of us notice when we call Noel "manipulative." It's not superhuman mind control. It's just being a celeb - steering the narrative and playing the game.

He knows who he is and what he is and what his name means to many people, but c'mon, he isn't some kind of super human or god. I love his music, but that's it. What he and Liam do in their private life, doesn't bother me. My impression of Noel Gallagher when I met him in 2011 wasn't very positive, but he wasn't in a good mood I suppose.

When God sets out to write a proper rock tune, he listens to Noel-penned songs.

At our lowest moments, we can all be Kuntz, and Liam and Noel are certainly no different. Obviously we all know about Liam's terrible treatment of women and his reckless use of drugs and drink, but what makes Noel so frustrating, is the way he seems to be a c unt, but only so that you don't notice. Some of the bullshit he's been feeding to the press for he last two years, mainly about his own brother, I think is utterly deplorable, and you can see why Liam, with that world-renowned short temper of his, would get frustrated (especially when you consider how it's all ended up for Liam...)
I can't really talk about their personalities as I've never met either of 'em, but their attitudes to the media is definitely what seperates them imo. My heart says Liam's in the right, and his what you see is what you get so like it or lump it attitude, is one of the things that originally attracted me to Oasis, but I can't deny, Noel is very very good at what he does, and some of his interviews are absolutely hilarious.

Nothing special actually. Noel came outside after he had the interview for 3FM in Melkweg after soundcheck. I got his autograph on my NGHFB album cover. He didn't say a word even to the guy next to me when he said "thanks for coming". Let It🩸 is gonna laugh again, but Liam was completely opposite. It was nice surprise. But then again, it's just my experience.

You've hit the nail on the head. Noel (despite what he says) is an expert at playing the game. Liam isn't as sharp or as canny as his brother and suffers the consequences. He has been a d*ck on countless occasions but imagine becoming world famous and adored by millions at the age of 21. Most of us would, if we're being honest, have turned into complete and utter twats.

Egotistic people have fear... noel is always relaxed, he never gives a fuck. He is never nuts. He is the king of his kingdom.
More interestingly, he accepts his limitations and he doesn't care. He never tries to show something he is not.
He is a good example of how life should be lived. He knows how to live, never tying himself to moral, etc. He just mind his own business, and whoever doesn't fit in the scheme frigs off.

Even Noel, with five years on Liam, and far less likely to behave erratically, became a self-absorbed dickhead in '96. Noel however, paid the price dearly when Be Here Now came out. You need only listen to the HFB to see the monumental impact the failure of that album had on him. It brought him crashing back to earth. Liam, who took far less criticism (although I doubt he would have cared anyway) was totally unaffected by it, and his appeal as a charismatic rockstar remained unchallenged... until about four years ago...

Liam, who took far less criticism (although I doubt he would have cared anyway) was totally unaffected by it, and his appeal as a charismatic rockstar remained unchallenged... until about four years ago... Personally I like them both. Noel for his songwriting (obviously) and his wit and charm, Liam for his swagger and don't-give-a-fuck attitude. I just feel that Liam often gets a raw deal. The perceived wisdom since about 1996 is that Liam's a twat but Noel's a decent bloke and the brains behind the whole thing. The way I see it, Noel can be unnecessarily cruel to him sometimes and Liam doesn't have the public support, profile or, let's face it, the wit, to hit back so it's not a particularly fair fight. Noel needs to remember that without Liam he wouldn't be where he is today. Having said that, if Debbie Gwyther is responsible for the ridiculous "Oasis reforming" rumours then I can understand why he's so pissed off. But I'd be surprised if Liam had anything to do with them.

Noel's a miserable bastard who is so lazy arsed and insecure about success that he can't be bothered to get out of his comfort zone musically, while Liam's pretty jovial to his fans in comparison but terrible with women, drink and drugs and he too is a lazy arse who can't be bothered to get out of his comfort zone musically. Sums the forum up!

Yeah Liam is exactly how you see him,he's all heart and that's amazing 'cause he's been able to stay true to himself despite being in the public eye for all these years Noel has got a far more complex and interesting personality and now I'm going to write what I think about it,I'll probably come up with a post so long that half of you won't even start reading it,while the other half will and will think that I'm some kind of pshycotic fangirl or something, but anyway Noel's a loner as the OP mentions,he strikes me as a guy who likes to party and all that shit, but who also LIKES,not doesn't mind, likes being on his own thinking about nothing And now, this is only my opinion, and what I'm going to say is just based on my impression 'cause I obviously don't know him,but to me he seems the kind of introverted guy who acts like a grumpy old fucker because he's not properly able to show what he feels,or to say it better he's kind of shy of showing what he feels, take the interviews when he's asked about his dad for example,he'd answer the questions, but he rarely lets himself go and tells what it was really like for him at the time If you read Paul's book both him and Peggy say that he'd lock himself in his bedroom and just played the guitar, and that he'd always keep things for himself without saying anything to anybody, while Liam would do things to draw people's attenction,so their different characters probably developed during those years and are partly attributable to what used to happen and how differently they used to react On his ego,I think we should not forget that in Oasis early years they were both heavily into drugs, and while Liam was probably born to be in the spotlight and to be a star, and that's why he's so great as a frontman,Noel was born to be the engine and the guy staying at the back, but coke probably boosted his confidence, plus, being the clever guy he is,he probably knew the "lad" attitude would have gained them more success and media coverage, but I don't think their egos are THAT big Liam has got a lot of self-belief,we can call it ego if you want, especially when on stage, but it's weirdly not annoying in the slightest,he acts in a way that makes it look cool,I mean,I never looked at him thinking "what an arrogant prick",I don't know how to describe it,but I also think he knew (and probably still knows) Noel was a part (you decide how big 'cause I don't want to start a war) in his success and always used to look up at him,as all the younger brothers do Noel on the other hand, while might look arrogant and pretentious, has made some humble comments over the years,he often mentions how some guys (like Weller) are leagues above him,how he's not the best as a guitarist, singer or musician, how he thinks Sara definitely knew who he was when they met 'cause if she didn't she wouldn't have looked twice at him as she's beautiful and he's not etc. He knows what he's good act and he's not shy to admit it,but he also knows what he's not good at and he's not shy to admit it either And anyway nowadays most of the times in interviews he's just joking over people's perception of his ego, which is a thing Liam does too to a smallest extent On meeting fans, everybody has his good and bad days, but the general opinion is that Liam's way nicer and I guess that as I haven't met them I have to accept it I'm really happy to see Liam taking his time to stop and chat with fans, people often says he seems genuinely interesting when they talk to him which is amazing,I think he's just more of a people's person than Noel Said that,I'm enough good as a stalker to know Noel can be as nice as Liam to his fans,as Twitter and Instagram (and probably this board too) are full of pictures and stories about him being cool with people,so you know he's moody and if you catch him on a bad day he's probably not going to be the nicest guy but he's not that much of a c unt after all,the simple fact that he comes out before every soundcheck and sometimes invites people to watch it and all that shows that he cares at least a little bit,and we as fans should appreciate both for that 'cause I don't think everybody in the music businness does it All that doesn't take anything away from the fact that while Liam as I've already said he's just how you see him and doesn't give a fuck about the press opinion of him,Noel's a clever businnessman and knows really well how to play the game and how to manipulate the media, even though I think nowadays most of the times he just says the first thing that pops in his head 'cause he considers himself to be in a ludicrous situation when interviewed and he's probably had enough of the whole thing And last (if you've made it to this point you're a legend!) the "Hitler" thing...he obviously likes to have everything under control, and when I say everything I mean EVERY FUCKING THING,he's called The Chief for a reason, but that's probably what took the band this far When they started he was the only one with some kind of experience in the music businness, and although I doubt he knew they would have got to Knebworth at some point,he probably had a clear idea of how to make it in the music world, and it didn't end up badly for them at all Okay, this is enough now
