Quick impressions from the album, I'm on my second listen.
Defector: Not bad, but like I saw in the leak making of, I don't like those Queen voices. It's not a long song but it gets boring quickly.
Revolt: Generic pop song.
Aftermath: First minutes are great. At first it sound like Brothers in Arms. But the end ruins it. Too long and, again, too generic pop.
The Globalist: Again, like Aftermath, the first minutes are great. But for me the piano section at the end ruins it. The western beginning is great, the second part it's too similar to Soaked but I like it. The heavy part it's awesome but I wanted to be longer. The piano section is boring, too similar at the beginning of United States of Eurasia.
Drones: I'm in a church full of Matt's clones singing? Very weird.
The Handler is still the best song for me.

Defector is basically Dragon Attack(by Queen) with the second best guitar solo(first being Reapers)
Revolt. Eh...
Aftermath. Gorgeous, made me cry, but for some people could be a mood(psycho) killer
The Globalist's first 6 minutes are the best of the album, the ending made me feel like it was on autopilot, coul've been splirtted in two on the tracklist. Disapointing because there wasn't a variation on the final 4 minutes.
Drones: I know the lyrics but cant understand shit of what Matt's singing

So that 2nd half of the album...
I don't really like Defector but it's not the worst on there. Revolt on the other hand is both hilarious and awful, which to be honest is what I hope for in a bad Muse song. No point just being boring, may as well provide some hilarity as well. Not really into Aftermath either. The Globalist is strange. I quite like the first bit, the heavy bit is good but doesn't really do go anywhere but I don't see the need for the piano bit at the end. The whole song doesn't really flow though, it feels more like 3 songs forced together. Not even sure what to make of the title track.

Heard The Handler for the first time a few days ago and really liked it, but haven't seen a lot of people write that the album is good. Most people seem to dislike it. I'll check it out anyway.

I like tracks 1-6. But the last half aside from Aftermath is terrible.
Drones is annoying. The Globalist is boring. Revolt and Deflector shouldn't even exist as main tracks.

The problem with Globalist is that the first two parts(Morricone & Heavy) have an actual flow, you cant hear any piano in there and then you got to the tremolos and poof its all gone and the piano sounds happy instead of sad. Anticlimatic for me. |

I really rate this album. There are half a dozen great songs on it, and two or three of them are sensational.
I think it's the best album they've done since Black Holes and Revelations, maybe Absolution.

It's too early to say whether it's better than Black Holes and Revelations, but it's up there. A proper closing track would probably have sealed it. |
