Was listening to the demo, and just was more blown away than the album version could ever do. Instead of the kick in with the electric guitar at the first ahhh.... , it's just Noel and his guitar. The demo is very moving as well. Shame how the album version turned out a plodding mess. My dream for the way the final version should've been:
1. The reverb on the demo is amazing, would've kept it but added a little more. 2. The eerie artificial sounds throughout the intro would just repeat itself throughout. 3. Beccy Byrne's back vocals are equalized in the ahh's, so it's like a duet. 4. Forgot to add, no electric rhythm guitar. Bassline is okay though.
And that's it. Keep it simple, sweet, and purely melodic.

Dave Sardy should be brought in as a war criminal for what he did to "If I Had A Gun...".

A beautiful, simple and heartfelt acoustic love song. You know what that needs? Loud fucking drums! Nice one Dave.
This is exactly how I Feel about Broken Arrow as well.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Brett Ratner of music producing.

The reverb on the demo is shit. The only listenable demo from HFB1 is Broken Arrow.
Noel also played a part in messing up If I Had A Gun by slightly changing the melody of the chorus and dumbing down the "ahhs" compared to the soundcheck. He also obviously approved the production of the album version, Dave Sardy was probably just doing what he was told hence why Noel enjoyed working with him. Hopefully the production of CY will get enough praise so Noel knows it is a step in the right direction.

I think it actually works really well on Broken Arrow, especially live. The demo is great as well, but the drums are a little more subtle on the album version than on IIHAG.

I think Broken Arrow is alright. You can actually hear almost every instrument on it.

I think Broken Arrow is alright. You can actually hear almost every instrument on it. Agreed. Along with TDOYAM, Broken Arrow is definitely the best sounding song the album. Neither one of those two sound plodding at all, and the muddiness isn't as omnipresent as it is on some of the others.

Sardy destroyed IIHAG. I was thinking this when I heard it live again and the giant drums kick in. On a fucking acoustic love song, why?!

Broken Arrow and EOTR are the strongest produced tracks. Shame most of the rest is very ploddy.

I suppose I shouldn't confess here that I love 'If I Had a Gun' and the rest of HFB1... I understand the production complaints on 'Record Machine,' but I thought HFB1 was a pretty cohesive, solid effort. Good tunes--and some of the best bonus tracks of any album, ever (barring 'The Good Rebel').

This is basically how I feel about all of the demo songs we heard in stripped-down versions before being officially released. I don't think there's a single song I prefer the album/released versions of.
And that was my biggest problem with the first NGHFB's album: all of these great songs with demo versions where there was actual emotion in the performances...absolutely ruined and drained of that by the released versions.

I like If I had a gun (album version). For me its broken arrow which was butchered completely..The demo of that song is so much better than the album version!

One of the great crimes against music is how Noel's demoes are not heard but the masses - only us real fans that seek them out. He is IMO one of the best demo musicians, going way back to the early Oasis days in a lot of cases the demoes were fucking TOP SHELF because it was raw, real and like you said EMOTIONAL. Just listen to the rough version of I Hope, I Think, I Know with Noel howling the vocals - you can feel the passion in his voice - its really incredible. You can't reproduce lighting, lots of times Noel should of just released his demoes as the album tracks. Off topic, U2 did this with a song called Mercy - the demo was a 6 minute epic and then when they played it live - they completely BUTCHERED IT, one of the biggest massacres of a great song I have ever seen.

That's why an artist like Neil Young tries to use first takes of songs whenever possible. There are stories of musicians coming in to play a session with him, going through a first run through of a track trying to learn it, and Neil having the tape rolling and saying that's the take. You end up with shit sometimes, but you also capture songs in a form that can be hard to reproduce.

Never understood what was so bad about the album version. The only things I would change are that the drums should come in after the first "ooo"s and that the "aahh"s should be the last thing before the final verse.

For me the song has always been massively overrated. Maybe it's because the soundcheck version was floated around for years prior. I'm not sure. Something never sat right for me on this song. I think it has to do with the "Ahhhhhhs Ahhhhhhs" parts. Always figured those were just place holder sounds. Nope. He included them.
