I really hope this song grows on me because I currently feel like a missing something! Decent song but the way people are talking it's as if it's better than Slide Away, Wish You Were Here and Norwegian Wood combined! Not in my top 5 NGHFB songs as things stand Agreed. I still don't get the excessive hype, either. I'm also not sure what all the hype is about, it's probably an 8/10 but TDOTL / LATD / WTSRTS / BOTMI are all better I think.

I feel the same. It's a good song and I like it, but it's definitely not up there with Live Forever etc. In my eyes it's not even up there with Gas Panic! Tbh when I first heard the album I was kind of disappointed, but it grew on me pretty quickly. Oh well, we're used to Noel hyping up his own songs by now, aren't we?

I'm with you guys... not getting the hype either. If I had to rank the tracks, it'd be bottom half. 8 out of 10 at a push (7.5 I'm more comfortable with). 'Ballad of the Mighty I' stands out as the pick of the batch to me.

I've been with you guys too. I mean it's a good song and I am starting to like it more and more but for me it's like #5 or 6 out of all the songs we have heard so far.

For me, this song blew me away on first listen in a way that I haven't felt since the '90s stuff. Great groove, great atmosphere with the horns and classic singalong Noel chorus. And fuck, the guitar solo in it alone is better than any solo on a NG album in over a decade.
In fact, I almost find the rest of the album underwhelming (even though it's very very good) only because the bar is set so high with a 10/10 song right off the bat.

indeed a great song, the solo and saxophone are money
have to say they haven't gotten it quite right live yet

Anyone notice how the first line rips off Something by The Beatles, lyric wise that is.

1 month on and it's still as great as when I first heard it. I would say it's Noels best song since the WTSMG era. It's mature, soulful and just really great. In fact 1 month on and this album is still great ., such a thoughtful album which at times in the past you could tell there had been no thought at all (Heathen Chemistry) Still listen to it on repeat still.

I noticed it kicks in like Tattva by Kula Shaker, and there's absolutely no problem with that. That is a really good song by another Britpop great, and this one is pretty good, too. It's a good opener, and seems like a preview to The Right Stuff, but imo, Do the Damage would've been a better song to open the album.
Nevertheless, I give it an 8.5/10, and I do like how the transition from this song to ITHOTM is very smooth.

Sounds great and flows well on my playlist where I've added it.

I absolutely love the live version of Riverman. Noel absolutely kills it. Top stuff.

Wtf is up with the thread title? The beginning, after 0:16. Still in my top 3 from CY. Can't understand why people think Do The Damage should have been the opener.

It's brilliant in the album, but I prefer how much more melancholic the chorus sounds live with the melody change, the lighter backing and faster tempo. Even if they haven't managed to nail the rest of the song.

I loved Riverman when I first heard it, now it's one of my least favorite NGHFB album tracks. I like it live though. I think that Do The Damage is the best opener on a album since Hello.

Better than DYKWIM ? (or you mean just as an opener ?)
