[Riverman] 8/10 A great opener. Love the sound, the rythm, the variety. There's still more potential in the song.
[In The Heat Of The Moment] 4/10 Really can't stand it. The 'na na nas' make me cringe, the bells make me feel like i'm in a 80's trash horror movie. Least favorite track.
[The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes] 5/10 It's not really a bad song but too one-dimensional, boring actually. It still works as a filler and maintains the flow of the album.
[Lock All The Doors] 9/10 Love It! Classic Oasis stuff. Rock'n'roll drums and guitars, good chorus, nice guitar solo. Nothing more to say.
[The Dying Of The Light] 8/10 I feel like this song had the most potential. I'm a big fan of the soundcheck version. The album version lacks this special feeling, the emotion of the soundcheck version. The arrangement is too flat and without any highlights (if you know what i mean). Still a good song.
[The Right Stuff] 7/10 This one is quite interesting. nice arrangement, creates a great atmosphere. Missing any highlights though.
[While The Song Remains The Same] 8/10 This one may get better in time. Has the feeling of a lighter 'falling down' to me and makes me wanna take a walk through my hometown. It's melancolic and i really like it.
[The Mexican] 6/10 Cowbells almost always work for me. But there's not much more in this one besides groove. It's okay, nothing more to say.
[You Know We Can't Go Back] 7/10 More upbeat than most of the songs on this record. That's probably why it's so easy to listen to. Good, but nothing special.
[Ballad Of The Mighty I] 10/10 Without a doubt the best track for me. When i first listened to this one it was like "Noel Gallagher is Back!". I think i only listened to this song in the first days after the release and i still love it. It has to be mentioned that i never expected Noel to break out of his usual song structures. In this one he did and it works great and feels so fresh.
Overall: 7,2/10
It's surely not the best album ever, but good enough for me to be satisfied to some extent. It's still much better than Noel's first solo attempt (two great songs, but blank in production).

after a few days to absorb, here are my updated thoughts: listening on headphones last night . . .
1. riverman - "the rain that comes, all of the love that was left behind is gone, when the riverman runs, find me the girl who electrifies the storm" noel sings with a certain swagger, activating the smoke machines and setting the mood right away. the riverman is a trippy mid tempo groove somewhere between "aka broken arrow" and "gas panic". a sexy santana-esque guitar after the first chorus complimented by a smooth saxophone
2. in the heat of the moment - has no place on this album
3. the girl with the x-ray eyes - this song has grown on me already mainly due to the unusual chord progression and ease in which noel delivers the melody. very space oddity-like
4. lock all the door - one word: distortion. morning glory type rock n roll, the chorus doesn't do it for me. borrowing a bit from mucky fingers there. second verse dropping out with the drums going a la headshrinker. and a rockin guitar solo!? u don't say
5. the dying of the light - this is IMPORTANT! this song is phenomenal but improperly mixed. the guitar leads need not be drowned out and the piano during the bridge mindlessly hammering away on one key!? and during the interludes?! BIG MISTAKE!!!! I HOPE THIS CAN BE FIXED BEFORE RELEASE!!!
otherwise this is a special moment for noel, smack dab in the middle of chasing yesterday. classic noel magic here
6. the right stuff - "when your heart gets shattered and your jeans get frayed... you and i got the right stuff" this is a kicked back sexy jazz jam through lsd tinted lenses. i love it.
7. while the song remains the same - this is STILL the standout track of the album. no contest! noel knocked it out the park with this one! crossing my fingers it is included in the set-list
8. the mexican - rolling stones "bitch" meets "in the heat of the moment" meets tequila
9. you know we can't go back - i hope i think i know meets born to run. this is the one i can't help but hearing liam singing. HAD TO SAY IT!
10. the ballad of the mighty i - james bond meets the bee gees on halloween vibe. i LOVE the touches by johnny marr it makes the song THAT much better. but why not let him play the solo?! WHY NOEL?!
comments: replace "in the heat of the moment" with "GOD HELP US ALL" overall: 7.5/10

This. Fuckin' hell, grow up. Why can't people enjoy the damn songs without dragging Beady Eye, Liam's voice, accusations of fanboyism and all that shit into the discussion? Just press play on your record player and shut up 1.for the same reason that every post in the Beady eye section is about Noel this n Noel that, oasis this n oasi that. and i ask you... Why can't people enjoy the damn beady Eye songs without dragging Noel, Oasis, charts, accusations of fanboyism and all that shit into the discussion? Just press play on your record player and shut up ...2.btw, Why can't people enjoy the damn Noel songs without dragging Dave Sardy, production, demos and old oasis verions and all that shit into the discussion? Just press play on your record player and shut up...
I cannot undersand the logic that when it comes to Noel suddenly many people forget everything else, forget their own posts in the forum or their behavior and start to ask for "...no shit in the discussion or just press play on your record player and shut up...". grow up?that seems more like dont say anything about Noel unless is good... Moan moan moan...

Like i said on the other thread
This album has the best production i have ever heard in an oasis related release. It is colourful and vibrant and IF OASIS HAD A SIMILARLY POLISHED PRODUCTION THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN TWICE AS BIG WORLDWIDE for sure.
The vocals blend with the music is perfect and not distracting LIKE ON OASIS AND BEADY EYE ALBUMS which destroys the atmosphere on many amazing tunes, throughout their career.
But the real dissapointment is the lack of GREAT, IMMEDIATE MELODIES like the ones from the 94-97 period.
The tunes are ok overall, but NEVER GREAT OR ORIGINAL like for instance Idler's dream,The importance of being idle,Champagne supernova and Some might say.
It is very simple. If these new songs had the overblown and annoying production of the Be here now songs, nobody would gibve them a second listen ,because the tunes are not strong enough.
I have heard the album once, but a great song shines through on only one hearing, with crappy production,whatever....
This a 7/10 album at best, which is pretty good for this shitty era in music, but it is slightly dissaopointing for Gallagher's talent at creating instant wistful songs.
1.Riverman 8/10 Really good song, almost eaqual to his 90's acoustic b-sides,although i could see THAT chorus coming from a mile away.
2.In The Heat of the moment 7/10 Enjoyable ,good verse melody.
3.Girl x-ray eyes 6/10 Mediocre ,almost same verse and chorus melody,b-side material.
4.Lock all the doors 7/10 Enjoyable, energetic, but a melody we have heard a million times before. If only the Be Here Now rockers had this production and energy.
5.Dying of the light 8/10 Pretty ballad, although the verse melody is stolen from a recent 3-4 year old radio hit,i can't remember which and the chorus is nirvana.Good song and should be a hit.
6.The right stuff 6/10 This a fuckin jam people ,it's NOT A SONG and everybody can write this type of songs. It has a good hook but overall it relies on the produvction to get its point across.
7. While the song 7/10 This has a good verse melody and that's the best thing about it.Enjoyable but not really good.
8.Mexican 4/10 This is FUCKIN TERRIBLE and i explain.Generic riff,forgettable melody.
9.We can't go back 8/10 Good pop song, but it sounds like The Kileers and Snow Patrol.Good melody of course although it sounds overused in lot of songs for me.
10.Ballad of the mighty i 7/10 Easy ,simplistic melody, but somehow affecting.
Some of these songs(Mexican, right stuff,Girl with x-ray eyes) would not have been considered even as b-sides in the nineties and i can't believe that Alone on the rope and Just let it come down over me have not been released on an album yet,but the mexican is on the new album.

It's quite funny reading the reviews on here. It seems you've got 3 types of people. 1. The guys that are stuck in the 90s and want another ballsy, Red Stripe swilling DM album, Typically seen swaggering around a BE gig in a Pretty Green parka with a Liam 90s haircut. 2. People that have grown up with Oasis and moved on and appreciate great songwriting and what Noel is doing. 3. The guys with other bands user names who can't quite comprehend that their favourite band is only capable of one or two great albums before they decent into absolute shite while Noel has been producing classics for over 20 years.

I'm a realist, Noel had a a pretty poor period spanning from Be Here Now to Heathen Chemistry. Heathen Chemistry is the one of the worst albums I own, it is Oasis at its lowest point. Chasing Yesterday is great.

As for Noel producing classics for over 20 years....you cannot be that stupid, not even Noel would say that.

Quite a simple review from me. 5 cracking songs, 5 average songs.
Crackers = Riverman, Lock All The Doors, The Dying Of The Light, You Know We Can't Go Back, Ballad Of The Might I.
Average = The Heat Of The Moment, The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes, The Right Stuff, While The Song Remains The Same, The Mexican.
All in all a very good album though and slightly better than his last effort.
People need to realise it isn't 1995 anymore and we're never going to hear something as great as DM, WTSMG or BHN ever again, times change, and so has NG, he's not in his 20's anymore.
Just enjoy this album and look forward to his next one, it could even be with Oasis, you never know...

This long time forum lurker from Texas gives it a 9 out of 10. One point deducted for the Na Na Na Na song. When I first saw the album art and heard In the Heat of the Moment, I was worried Noel had finally and completely lost it. But Aside from those two things, I would not change a thing about this album except to ask for more! We are lucky to be getting such great music from this guy so late into his career. (I think Sting was making lute albums at this stage in solo career. ) I even like the goofy Mexican song.
Expectations. Its our own baggage that we bring to the listening experience. Some people around here seem to have unnaturally high expectations. And given the nature of the Oasis bombast and Noel's tendency to over sell his material, such inflated expectations are understandable. But see, none of that makes it over the Atlantic. For instance, when I first heard Magic Pie I liked it (except for some of the lyrics and the length) - I had 't heard Noel comparing it to the classics; Had I been expecting another Don't Look Back, I would have hated it.
Last night I put CY on, heated up my grill, opened a beer and started cooking some steaks. A fantastic listening experience all the way through - great flow and variety, especially after substituting Do the Damage for Na Na Na Na. We should all be celebrating and taking it in, not nit picking or crying for something that will never be again. Of course this is a fan forum and fans are mental by definition! But Noel has not destroyed our childhood, george Lucas-style. Looking forward to seeing him play Dallas in May!

Do you know what, you're right, thinking about it, Heathen Chemistry is one of my least favourite albums ever. Along with that Snow Patrol album with Chasing Cars, Embrace's If You've Never Been and Kasabian's Empire, it totally blows.

I don't think we should even comment on the mix, because I'm pretty sure the quality is obscuring it. I think we should wait until the actual release to form opinion on that.

Heathen has really bad songs and a lot of average one...She is Love, Hung in a band place, better man...but it has really great singles, but it's like four great songs and fillers (although I like different cloud).

So after listening to the album pretty much on a loop for the last few days I have to admit Noel knocked it out of the park with this. While I found his first album quite droll except for a couple of tracks, there is only "The Mexican" I'm not really sold on with Chasing Yesterday. The Dying Of The Light and The Girl With X-Ray Eyes are amongst Noels best post 97 work. People who have seen me post in the past will know I am a massive Beady Eye fan and a part of me was hopeful that Noel would drop the ball with this so I could say "I told you so" to the few users on here that gave Beady Eye fans such a hard time at the release of BE. Then I realised that the fact I can be a Beady Eye fan but still rise above that to commend Noel on an amazing album that I feel is better than BE just means I get to enjoy more music.
So yeah, after all that rambling a fantastic Noel album and much better than NGHFB debut.

Just downloaded it, can't wait to buy this in my hands.
These are my intial impressions. I'll be very critical, I'm a huge fan of Noel anyways... obviously. Listen to each song once or twice.
1. Riverman
Just awesome. Love it so much. I truly think this is a gem. Just so good almost epic in a way. Lots of vibes an sounds going on here. So fucking good.
2. In the Heat of the Moment
Cool song, I do like it, but its nothing I'm crazy on. I mean its a good song, better than 3 or 4 songs off the debut album. Never was that impressed from the get go with it. Thought it was a poor choice for a single. It is good though. Just too much like AKA what a life slowed down.
3. Girl With XRay Eyes
Has a strong old school 70s vibe to it for sure for me. Which I like. Not crazy about the song, but I do like it alright. Probably will grow on me? i don't know.
4. Lock All the Doors
Awesome. Would sound amazing with Liam singing. SOunds good with Noel, but this would be a LIam track for sure.
5. The Dying of the Light
Really like the production with different things. Lots of layers. Very good song.
6. The Right Stuff
Cool song, very chilled. I like it. Just has a relaxing fizzle to it.
7. While the Song Remains the Same
Probably my least favorite on first listen. Just bland to me. Very average and run of the mill.
8. Mexican
Very cool, funky... different. I like it.
9. You Know We Can't Go Back
I like it quite a bit. Top 5 for me so far. Very anthem like. Great.
10. Ballad of the Might I
Better song that ITHOTM. They sound simulair to me. This one is better. Nothing special, still underwhelmed by it.
all and all from a first little listen, I like the album.
I think its as good, or slightly not as good as the debut from this point.
Just a first impression though.
