Not that it's without great songs, but it's nowhere near a great album. Lets not kid ourselves. For the love of me I can't understand the praise for The Dying of the Light. It reminds me of Everybody's on the Run. A long, half written song with slick production trying to hide the fact that it sucks. 6 good songs and 4 bad songs. I can live with that. Noel is married and has kids, so the days of releasing classic albums is over.
Garbage bin songs:
The Girl with X-Ray Eyes The Dying of the Light The Right Stuff The Mexican
Songs that will live on:
Riverman In the Heat of the Moment Lock All the Doors While the Song Remains the Same You Know We Can't Go Back Ballad of the Mighty I
All opinions are welcomed, but if you don't like it to the point where you feel the need to start a new thread then why come on the blokes dedicated forum? If you don't like it by all means say so within review threads etc but if you are not a fan of the album is there any need to kill the buzz of the folks who really do? Why not just move onto a site dedicated to an artist or album that you like and can be positive about?

I'm not suprised to see the opinions that the album is nothing special. I was actually shocked by how good it was received from the very beggining, it's different from what Noel is doing usualy, quite challenging.

After listening to it during three days, here is my review. For me, best oasis-related album post-BHN. Noel summarized the album mood perfectly with his "crying while punching in the air " quote. The tone is melancholic but uplifting. Riverman 8/10 It's like a summary of the album: it has instrumental variety, a non-standard structure and , of course, a big, melancholic but uplifting chorus ITHOTM 8/10 It could be a b-side of the golden age !. One of those songs that catch you at first listen. If it's so easy, why are there so rare ? TGWTXRY 9/10 I really think it is his most commercial song since WTSMG. It could be a worldwide hit. Of course it will not. To have a world hit today , he would need the song to be in a movie or some other means of massive promotion. But if it had the exposure other acts have (e.g. Coldplay ), it would be massive LATD 9/10 It has almost all things that made me love Oasis in the first place. I only miss one thing I will not mention TDOTL 8/10 Typical Noel-sung ballad, but one of the good ones TRS 8/10 In the context of the album is a 9/10. Changes the tone of the album from "anthemic" to "moody" WTSRTS 8/10 Like a cross of Falling Down and POTQ. What is not to like ? TM 6/10 The song is good, but I don't think Noel is a good performer for this type of songs. Josh Homme or Alex Turner would rise the score 1 or 2 points easy YKYCGB 7/10 Like the verses, the bridge and the general feeling, but the chorus is weak for me BOTMI 9/10 Best Noel produced song ever and very strong song Overall: 8.5/10

It all depends on what you were expecting. I think it's nowhere great as the albums we had in the past and some of Noel's material on DOYS, for example, to me is miles above this, but it flows well, has some amazing melodies and is a leap forward compared to his first solo stuff. It's something more colourful, complex and just different from him. In conclusion, I regret not opening a thread on my own to share these thoughts with you folks. God bless.

READ THIS: I don't get you people. How the hell are you guys rating these songs so high? I'm seeing 9's and 10's for most songs. What the fuck. First, off we are all mega Noel fan's as if you are on these forums then you went out and found a leaked copy, listened to it, and definitely speak our language. BUT - that doesn't mean I'm just going to say this album is great because I'm supposed to. They guy is using the same material over and over again and no one cares. I was OK with it with "If I had A Gun"/"Wonderwall" re-write but that was because it was his first solo effort so I cut it some slack. I just expect more - especially if he is going to bash other current artists out there today like the Ed Sheerans, One directions, etc. (both of which I fucking hate BTW). The Chief needs to back up his comments with his music for all of our sake. You can't talk shit on a basketball court and then just fucking suck. If you talk shit and want an ego you better be better than good. The songs that most of you like (and are giving 10's) are "The Dying of the Light" which is just "Shout it Out Load" an old B-Side from the 90's. And I for one am sick of hearing about the sun, heaven, having a young mind but old body etc.. It was a B side then, why is it the best fucking song ever now? "The Right Stuff" is "Gas Panic" redone with a slight variance in the intro. Literally by a change in one note. And the lyrics suck ass. "X Ray" = a shitty version of "The Masterplan". "Lock all the Doors" is literally "Whats the story Morning Glory/"My Big Mouth" except it is no better than a B-Side from the Be Here Now days like "Full On". "In the Heat of the Moment" - it looks like we all hate the Na-na-nas for the most part, but "The Mexican" has a similar melody to the verses which really bothered me. "The Ballad of the Might I" to me is the best song on the album. It shows a new direction and some originality while keeping his style that we all love. Overall, if this album came out in the 90's, he would be lucky to open up for Pearl Jam. Most music sucks so bad now a days which is why we all think this is better than it is. I am/will be embarassed to listen to most of this album in front of friends which is just sad.

Without a doubt the best album Noel's written released since Definitely Maybe. As great as "What's the Story Morning Glory?" is i've always considered it as the best collection of GREAT 10/10 songs in the last 25 years while 'Definitely Maybe' as the best or one of the best GREAT albums of the last 25 years. So with that said 'Chasing Yesterday' is better as an album than 'Glory' was but one could argue there are 7 or 8 masterpiece level songs on that album while there are only maybe 3 or 4 on CY. Just my two cents on that though, to each his/her own: Riverman 10/10 Absolute Stunner, as soon as I heard that miffed youtube live version my first and only though was "damn that sounds like great music". The guitar solo certainly catapulted it into the stratosphere but moments in the song where Noel just lets it breathe are what do it for me, and it doesn't feel like there are any moments you could cut out either. In the Heat of the Moment 8/10 Solid single, great short yet effective verses, catchy as hell chorus. Simple as that. The Girl with the X-ray Eyes 7/10 Wasn't sure what to make of this one when I first heard it, definitely a grower in my book. Love the guitar solo, Could have used a bigger chorus but i'm kind of content with it not having THAT huge chorus being the song that follows the main single that had THAT huge chorus. Lock all the Doors 9.5/10 Lets face it and call it what it is, its the rocker that everyone wanted on his first solo album after hearing it for the first time. Loved his first album but my first reaction after heard was "God great solo effort, kinda different but very Noel-ish.........just wish it had a rocker or two". Sold lyrics, great guitar solo (this will be a pattern) The Dying of the Light 10/10 Really loved the soundcheck version on Youtube but I really was hoping this would get an "upgrade" in the studio mainly because it sounded too much in the vein of another If I had a gun. And this studio version is VASTLY superior to the youtube SC version. Very moody, atmospheric, love the subtle yet extremely effective use of the piano and the drums are spot on as well was the pointed and yet delicate guitar solo (See pattern?). Despite the lyrics being pretty much the same as the youtube cut this song turned from a typical noel ballad to a very dark almost ominous kind of song. Still a ballad of sorts though. Top notch, and much improved title haha The Right Stuff 9/10 Total groove song that just feels great to listen to. No structure, just music with some vocals for about half the song. GREAT guitar especially towards the end. The Mexican 6.5/10 Not a bad song, good groove, great guitar. I place this song hear because 'While the Song Remains the Same' and 'You Know We Can't Go Back' make SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more sense being placed back to back both musically and lyrically. While the Song Remains the Same 10/10 This has got to be the moment on the album that once I heard this song I knew that I liked this album 2x better than his last. This song sounds very much in the same vein as 'Alone on the Rope', fairly dark lyrically if you read the lyrics and while the music is very dark as well it does have a quality to it that keeps in that territory where it doesn't make you cry but certainly moves you emotionally which in my opinion is a much more effective way for a song to move someone. This is the one song that I wished was longer. Haunting vocals on this You Know We Can't Go Back 10/10 This song would have been perfect to place in the track listing right after 'While the Song Remains the Same' because they both speak to the same subject (chasing yesterday/lingering on the past) but with two different perspectives, the first dark and emotionally attached to the past while this song is bright, upbeat, and vibrantly positively looking towards the future all while sounding as if its cool to acknowledge the past but just remember, we do have to move forward. Great vocals on this. LOVE the piano outro that leads into 'Ballad of the Mighty I'.... Ballad of the Mighty I 10/10 Massive song thats probably the best Noel's produced ever, in terms of sound. Although its probably my 3rd or 4th favorite on the album. Great guitar work by him and Johnny Marr, really makes the song after it was already made. Excellent drums all around, love the strings too, didn't bleed the track to death with them which is often a mistake these days. Overall: 90/100 Top notch album that from start to finish just feels like a journey, very moody but very emotional as well that hits home for me on many fronts. That probably the reason why I prefer this album to his last, it sounds more personal, and lets face it, its production is WAAAAAAY better than HFB. And musically its more interesting and better for it. And I love the fact that this album has what, 9 guitar solos? ? Some short, some long but all stellar in my opinion. Well done Chief, keep 'em coming!

Good that people are excited. That's what music should do.
For me it's pretty good. Won't really now how good for a year or two, when it is either sat unplayed like most oasis albums after 2000 or worn out like the first three and the masterplan.
I definitely prefer his faster solo tunes. Broken arrow by far my favourite from the first album.
On here lock all the doors, x ray eyes, heat of the moment and u know you can't go back are quite addictive and think they will be the ones I will still be listening to next year. Riverman is good but needs to be speeded up it will probably sound great live, like the faster version of talk tonight does.
A solid 7.5

Loving the album more and more on each listen. Dying of the Light especially gets better on every listen. This album is by far better than anything Oasis did after BHN, that's without question.
Nothing will ever compare to the first 3 Oasis albums, just purely living in those times when Oasis were huge was amazing, but Noel now as a solo artist is as confident & consistent as he's ever been. Long live Noel solo career, and no to any future Oasis projects.

Naturally scores are going to be inflated somewhat. If you are a member of this forum that makes you a special breed. Oasis broke up like 6 years ago and this place is still thriving. Plus I know some Pearl Jam fans who still think they put out records that rival Led Zeppelin LPs. It's only natural to boost your support levels. That's what fans do.

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT
THE MIX IS ALL WRONG
the single piano note throughout most the track needs to be REMOVED
the guitar work needs to be a bit LOUDER
a competent piano players needs to accompany the song
i just listened to this album with my headphones and i'm telling you that god damn note being pressed over and over was driving me mad

And I'm sick of all these posts saying 'if Beady Eye had released it everyone would slate it'. This. Fuckin' hell, grow up. Why can't people enjoy the damn songs without dragging Beady Eye, Liam's voice, accusations of fanboyism and all that shit into the discussion? I cannot undersand the logic that when it comes to Noel suddenly many people forget everything else, forget their own posts in the forum or their behavior and start to ask for "...no shit in the discussion or just press play on your record player and shut up...". grow up?that seems more like dont say anything about Noel unless is good...
