Is Messi better than Pele, and is Messi the best player in the history of the sport? I'd have to say yes to both. Simply phenomenal. (N.B., I do realize that the context of the game has changed, which makes this harder to evaluate, for obvious reasons).
And, what's more - and this really intrigues me - will there ever be a player better than Messi? I know we've said the same thing with regards to Henry, and then Ronaldinho, etc, and now we're saying it with Messi. But it's truly difficult to envision someone more talented than him..... I would like to see him in the Premiership, but not really as that would destroy any competition that still lingers in this league.....Because of his rightfully expensive transfer fee and contract, it's been proven that Chelsea can't afford to buy him. But imagine if they could - They would seriously walk the league. In fact, I think if Chelsea, City, or Arsenal had him, they would win the league (I would include Utd, but they're fucking up despite having a formidable attack, so something is seriously wrong with that team in general....).
Messi: 396 goals in 485 appearances. And god knows how many assists. And we haven't even discussed his magical talented skills. And he's only 27, seriously scary.

But back on topic - Messi IS the best ever.
Saw him for my 21st in Barcelona; the kid scored a hat-trick for me against Valencia. For that, the kid has my undying loyalty.
Genius of thought, shot, pass and dribble.

Brazils Ronaldo is better than the current one, and Messi doesn't even touch Zidane.
It was much better growing up with those two than the current egomaniacs.

Brazils Ronaldo is better than the current one, and Messi doesn't even touch Zidane. It was much better growing up with those two than the current egomaniacs. Barcelona, 96/97. Before his 2 career-ending injuries, after which he won a World Cup. When he started running he was fearless. Messi has a great dribbling skill, but it's not the same feeling. Zidane was pure class and elegance. Real Madrid style was "give the ball to Zizou and let magic happen". He also had more imagination than Messi, who most times tries to make the same play. Effective, yeah, but not new. Diego Maradona wipes the floor with both of them. This guy won a world cup with an average team. Messi has failed twice to do the same. Actually, it was a shame to watch him at the semifinal and final with the captain bracelet on, all alone, while Mascherano talked to the team or the GK. About Pelé... he, like Di Stéfano, played 40 years before, when it was another sport. Still, if you ask me, I'd say the best footballer ever was Don Alfredo. He made Real Madrid the best team in History, as FIFA recognised.

Brazilian Ronaldo was the best striker I've ever seen and Zidane the best midfielder. Messi is great, one of the best of all time, but lately he has been below is own average. C. Ronaldo has been better for some time. Still, neither won a World Cup which nearly all the other great figures of the sport did (Ronaldo, Zidane, Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer...). In fact, Messi was good in 2014, but he was terribly harmless in the final against Germany. One or two good dribblings in 120 minutes.

About Pelé... he, like Di Stéfano, played 40 years before, when it was another sport. That sums it up. Football evolves very quickly. There is no logic in comparing players from different generations. If we're honest, the most that any of us can do with any conviction is to judge players against their peers, and only those that we've seen for ourselves. How could I, at 31 years old, claim to be any sort of expert on the best player of the 1960s? And with respect to the current generation, if anything should be obvious by now it's that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are so closely matched that any attempt to rank them is utterly pointless.

No way is the brazilian ronaldo better than cristiano...just look at CR7's Real Madrid stats..hes scored more goals than he's played, something hardly anyone can boast. CR7 scores goals for fun and its rare to not see him on the scoresheet.
As for Pele, i've never watched him live but I think you can compare Messi more than Maradona tbh
Maradona is most probably better than Pele though

Cristiano is the best on his position, and Ronaldo was the best on his.

I think every generation has its best player, Pele from the 60's, Cruyff from the 70's, Maradona from the 80's, Ronaldo from the 90's, Zidane from the 00's and now in this decade Massi.
Yeah you can't compare a players from this day to a player of 40 years ago, neither Messi or CR7 can't be compared with Pele or Maradona, they are from different eras, and also Messi or CR7 shouldn't be compared with a formidable player from 40 years in the future.

Messi is the best of all time IMO Barca's all time leading goalscorer by the age of 24, now the all time top goal scorer in both La liga and the CL. Messi is the first football player in history to win four x Ballons d'Or, all of which he won consecutively. the only player to top-score in four consecutive Champions League seasons, also the record for the most hat-tricks scored in the competition. also the first player to score five goals in a CL match. set the European record for most goals scored in a season with 73 goals, set the goalscoring record in a single La Liga season with 50 goals, and became the f irst player ever to score and assist in six different official competitions in one season. scored in his 19th consecutive La Liga game, becoming the first footballer in history to net in consecutive matches against every team in a professional football league. the most goals and most hat-tricks in the history of El Clásico. For me it's pretty silly to even question him to be honest, he might not have won the world cup but he has won pretty much everything else there is to win, even as a youngster too when he won the U-20 World Cup, finishing as both the best player and the top scorer, a runners-up medal at the Copa América, also named young player of the tournament. In 2008, he also won an Olympic Gold Medal with the Argentina Olympic football team. His record speaks for itself.

Obviously I can't claim to have seen Pelé in his prime. But I've asked my grandad his opinion and he reckons that Messi is the best player he has ever seen - he's been going regularly to matches since the 1930s and has somewhat of a bias against the modern game. He rates Messi higher than Di Stéfano, Pelé, Eusébio, Puskás and Maradona.

Him and Ronaldo are the best and most expensive players in the world. The things they have been doing over the past few seasons have been incredible. Any club would take them and change there entire system to get them in. Difficult to compare from different era. Pele was some player from what I've seen and him and Maradonna used to get the shit kicked out of them.

I don't think he would score as many here because while we dont have teams such as Barca and Real I think the lower teams are stronger in the premier league.

Funny thread ! Messi is nowhere close to Pelé. Pelé is the greatest football player of all time. No doubt about it. Messi is not even in the top 20 of his own sport.
