It's difficult and these aren't necessarily my top 5 (although some are) but if I had to start from scratch these would be great signposts to lead me to the collection I'd eventually amass;
Oasis- Definitely Maybe The Beatles- Revolver Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here Radiohead- OK Computer The Cooper Temple Clause- Kick Up The Fire and Let The Flames Break Loose

Didn't one of their members leave to join Dirty Pretty Things?

Adding a couple of more to my list: Strangers - Ed Harcourt Butterfly House - The Coral The Complete John Peel Session - The Jesus and Mary Chain The Shore - The Shore Alligator - The National It's A Shame About Ray - The LemonheadsGreat Choice, Now if there's a band that's seriously underrated band and album it's this. Evan Dando's masterpiece and all under 30 minutes. Got to give some love for the follow up Come on feel the Lemonheads, it does tail off near the end but some of the greatest stuff he written was on that album. Big Gay Heart is a lost classic. Then he did a Pete Doherty before Pete Doherty, pissed his talent up the wall on a serious heroin habit. He came back with some alright stuff but he never topped those two albums.

Didn't one of their members leave to join Dirty Pretty Things? Yep spot on! They took 4 years off after the album I listed just when they were on the cusp of getting somewhere in the mainstream (Brit Nomination/Radio One Single Of The Week/Top 3 Album) which completely ruined any momentum they had built up and during that time the bass player left to join DPT. They did one album after that and it was really quite poor (especially given the 4 year waiting period) I saw them on that very same tour but first saw them at Leeds 2002 and loved them from there (I even had hair to match). Their first two albums are almost flawless for me, cross between Oasis/Primal Scream with some Metal and Post Rock thrown in for good measure. Not for everybody but I fucking loved them

See I've always said top 5 or 10 are pointless cause it's a matter of the moment and mood ......this week my top 5. Would be. Physical graffiti ( but that's always there ). London calling , outlando's d'amour , appetite for destruction , vh1. It will change next month it's all about the mood except for physical graffiti that will always be 1 .

What a line up only 20 euro when I went to that. All four bands had great to classic debuts released at the time. I wasn't a massive fan of The Cooper Temple Clause to be honest I just remember them been very good live (I was slightly drunk at the time ).

SIAS is really underrated as an album not enough love goes it way. The Band is a stunner as is Exile on Main Street. I'm still undecided if The Smiths debut or TQID is their best album.

This always changes, and I'll be sure to kick myself for missing out one glaring obvious one when I realise it but here I go - in no particular order.
1. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 2. The Smiths - Meat Is Murder 3. Kate Bush - The Sensual World 4. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire 5. Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
Couldn't decide what Beatles one or REM in there - too hard a decision as all their albums are equally played, but perhaps no individual album of theirs played more than the ones listed above, so decided to leave them out partly due to such indecision. Sigur Ros's Valtari I'd put there one day, and I couldn't forget mentioning Ryan Adams - Gold which is phenomenal. Franz Ferdinand's debut, Arcade Fire's The Suburbs and Beach Boys Pet Sounds are also unlucky to miss out. But those 5 are my top five at the moment... just.

I seem to remember for about 4/5 years after they were still mentioning that tour as if it was entirely down to them that all 4 bands had great careers and basically sold all subsequent tours off the back of 'come see the future 3 biggest bands in the UK, now just like in 05'

Oasis - Definitely Maybe The Smiths - The Queen is Dead Howard Shore - The Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring (Complete Recordings) John Williams - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Led Zeppelin - IV Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous The Beatles - Revolver The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses Ryan Adams - Love is Hell.
Ok, so that's more than 5 but those albums are the essentials for me. If they were all I could listen to for the rest of my life then I'd be happy.

Very basic, lacking lots of great bands, but I'd consider those 6 the essential.

I fucking love 90s rock music, so I oughta give some recognition to the era by giving 12 essential albums of the era:
Nirvana - Nevermind Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik U2 - Achtung Baby Pearl Jam - Ten Metallica - Metallica (Black Album) R.E.M.- Automatic for the People Green Day - Dookie Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album), Pinkerton Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, Definitely Maybe Radiohead - OK Computer
6 from 1991/2, and 3 from 1994, those were incredible years for music.

Funnily enough, the following were my favourite albums when I turned 18 and most probably will form my top 5 when I'll reach the big 30 later this year. It's either me or popular music that's stagnating. Honourable mentions might expand this list to the 300 mark, I strongly believe no essential/best-of is actually complete without mentioning New Order, The Verve, David Bowie or even friggin' Sonic Youth or Kraftwerk and all the others I just can't think of right now.
Oasis - Definitely Maybe R.E.M. - Automatic For The People Radiohead - The Bends The Beatles - Rubber Soul U2 - Achtung Baby
