Anyone else miss the old Richard? Richard now Wow. What even is he on about this time? Rock bottom performer these days if you ask me. This whole oddball persona he's been doing just started with this album cycle though. He was pretty much the same as he'd been throughout the 2000s during the UNOS era, with a much more relaxed stage presence. Not sure if the drugs are talking these days now but it seems like it. The guy has come a LONG way from the mid to late 90s, from having panic attacks before gigs and from heavy drug use. His solo act from 2000-2007 was much of the come down approach, relying in subtely than a demanding stage presence. He carried this behavior into the Verve reunion gigs as well. I guess he wanted to stop being himself and started acting like a fool like many exaggerating frontmen have done in the past.

I've come to terms with the fact that Richards best material is clearly behind him now, judging by his new style of forgettable poor synth pop (and UNOS). He only has three decent songs on 'These People' IMO, and I wont hype myself up for his next release. I've even lost interest in seeing him live again. It's a shame, since he's been my favourite artist for nearly 15 years.

I don't think he's even popular enough anymore to be overrated

Saw him in Liverpool a couple nights ago, one of the best gigs I've been to. He was amazing.

I know I give Richard's solo career alot of flak, and by every means he deserves it. The overindulgence of strings, overpolished mid-90s nolstalgic Chris Potter production/mixes with resorting to dull love songs about Kate (his wife), has instead of trying to make his sole name bigger than Verve, backfiring and drifted him into obscurity until Chris Martin asked to perform Bittersweet Symphony with Coldplay in '05 and then The Verve reunion in '07. In the early days of it, right after breaking up the Verve and taking UH outtakes and compiling them for Alone With Everybody, his career showed flashes of something groovier and different on the horizon, with string-less, electronic and groovier tracks like 'New York'. I'd argue this is the best song he's done solo-wise. Doesn't have anything to do with trying to make a washed out forced love ballad sugarcoated with swelling string overdubs and trebly acoustic guitars, but takes a form all on its own and kicks ass as I'd like to say. Why he didn't try and go further into this direction, similar to an Ian Brown kind of solo career, we'll never know.

The main problem of Ashcroft is that he doesn't write great (even just good ?) melodies anymore. The last album was shit. Songs like "Out of My Body", "Hold On" are inexcusable for a guy who once wrote "The Drugs Don't Work", "On Your Own" or "Sonnet". The best song, "They Don't Own Me" is almost a reharsh of the great "Lucky Man".
The voice still remains amazing though, so that's big shame. And I'm not sure that reforming The Verve will change anything, as I think Forth was a supbar album.

The question that goes round my head is why Ashcroft's tour can't really start. Few odd shows, but not a proper string of gigs in Europe or the UK. Would love to see him live but can't stand a chance...

Would love to see him live but can't stand a chance... I know it's clearly easier for him (to answer my own point) but it would have been much better to see him in some smaller venues rather than arenas.

Done a cover of The Drugs Don't Work for anyone interested. Can you do a cover of "Sonnet" & "Lucky man" as well? & "History" if it sounds good on acoustic.

Richard is playing Luna Park in April next year. So I'd guess another album is on its way.

From Richard Ashcroft
“With experience comes knowledge and for me this is my strongest set of songs to date. All my favourite sounds distilled into something that will hopefully give my fans lasting pleasure. It is for them. Music is power.”
