Jesus, how good is A Northern Soul? Ashcroft's voice and lyrics are heart-wrenching.

really like this song now, didnt think much of it when it came out, seems to be one of those albums for me that gets better the more I listen to it, none of the songs are bad imo, theyve all got something great about them.

Any chance of him doing a North American tour? I unfortunately doubt it. That said, if he does do a stop in Canada besides Toronto, I have a feeling you and I will be at the same gig! I really doubt I would fly from Edmonton to Toronto for one gig !

Can't say I'm liking the album at all after a first listen. Will give other tries to see if I'll change my mind.

Jeez gas reading Nick's Facebook rants... I really feel sorry for him. I also agree with Spud, Nick's work with Black Ships/Submarines was deeply average. I actually prefer to listen to Dickie's better solo songs than that noodley self indulgent dribble meself. The 'songs' like 'Here So Rain' were also instantly forgettable.
Anyway it's been nearly a month so thought I'd post a review of 'These People' that nobody will care about... here we go.
1. Out of My Body - 1/10. The album version is a monstrosity. A Frankenstein-ish barage of outdated electronics and safe polished production, topped off with the new Italo-Abba-Euro-Pop icing of his. His worst opening tune ever - 'Are You Ready' blows this out of the water. It gets a point for the live version.
2. This is How it Feels - 7/10. When I first heard this, I felt deflated. 6 years off and this? I remember people's reactions to it - 'this most likely will be the most poppy song, I expect the album to have better stuff on it' - when has Ashcroft's lead single NOT been the strongest? That's what I thought, so I was very concerned. Song for the Lovers, Check the Meaning, Break the Night etc were all arguably the strongest tracks from his previous so I thought why won't this be? Turns out it is the best track - and it has a lovely melody and it grows and grows on you. But it's a pop production and a pop song - not indie, certainly not rock. But a good solid single. I have no aversion to good pop music at all.
3. They Don't Own Me - 7/10. Another grower, and possibly my favourite track on the album. Lyrically it's not anything special, which applies to the whole record, but it's stately and mildly majestic in an Urban Hymns kinda way. It's the closet he's come to emulating his mid-90's self, and it does kinda sound like a follow up to Lucky Man. It goes on too long though, and the outro lets it down. Production is bland but the voice and the chorus are there.
4. Hold On - [not on long enough to rate]
5. These People - 5/10. Classic Ashcroft solo. Plodding, unoffensive and with a half cooked melody. Very forgettable. Who are these people? You don't give a bollox by the end of the song I can tell you that much.
6. Everybody Needs Somebody to Hurt - 6/10. Like 'They Don't Own Me', this is mid-nineties Dickie. In fact, it's probably the closet thing he's down solo that reminds me of A Northern Soul. But it's Northern Soul-lite. Like 'They Don't Own Me' is Urban Hymns-lite. Lyrically it's the best track on the album for me.
7. Picture of You - 6/10. This first reminded me of 'The Crab' (b-side to 'Drugs Don't Work' I think). I like it but it's really nothing more than filler. Plus, the gulf in quality between 'The Crab' and this... McCabe's guitar work creating all the sonic swirls etc... it's hard not to feel a bit nostalgic when hearing this one - it's a stark reminder of how limited Ashcroft is on his own.
8. Black Lines - 2/10. Starts off kinda like 'Drugs Don't Work' and then by the end of it you are just thinking about everything bad regarding Ashcroft's solo career because this does a fine job of reminding you, lyrics are awful, the chorus is stretched out and it's nothing more than soulless meandering plodder. Very disappointing track.
9. Ain't The Future So Bright - 6/10. This was the one song from hearing the brief clip on the radio that had me intrigued. I really like the intro, the piano and the synthy noise. The drums etc, lovely. The production was warm, something about the start reminds me of 'Random Access Memories' - the vocals are good, I liked the vocoder part. But for fuck sake 'Aint the Future So Bright... when you're in looooove... oh yeah' - did you finish writing the track? Bloody hell.
10. Songs of Experience - 2/20. It's Simple Song part 2 with the Italo/Euro/Abba vibe somewhere going on. I don't usually finish the song. Out of My Body, Hold On and this. The axix of evil for my ears anyway.
The positives: The voice. Still an amazing grasp of melody that is wasted.
The negatives: Lyrics, production but the undeniable concrete reality that he's not a tortured soul anymore howling out this amazing songs, but riding on the back of it and writing songs FOR tortured souls that don't connect whatsoever.

Pretty much agree with everything you've written. I can't stand the production, This is How It Feels and They Don't Own Me, that are already good songs, could have been so much better.

Am I the only one who likes "Hold On"? It could have been a nice song but the production absolutely destroyed it. It sounds like french/ italian pop variety. They Don't Own Me is the best song on the album, imo.

Am I the only one who likes "Hold On"? You've changed my mind about that one a bit, I must admit. Not long after we first disagreed about the tune, I woke up with it in my head and found a new appreciation for it. It's still one of my least favourites on the new record but it's decent enough. Makes more sense in the context of the 10 tracks than stand alone for me.

New video for They Don't Own Me. Best song on the album for me... it's another "Richard on autopilot" ballad but I think he nailed it this time! The strings here don't feel overdone or out of place, as they unfortunately do on some other album tracks.

Saved a few quid on the video again. Drive to the countryside, don't worry about a film license as there's no one about. Different times with less people buying his/ paying for music in general, i guess.

I think its quite nice, least it actually fits the vibe of being free etc, rather that than another video of richard dad dancing around a dark room
