Good lord Forth is just so good. I'm re-listening to Vallium Skies and it's just fantastic. Forth is fucking awesome. Screw Pitchfork!

Listening to the Urban Hymns demos has considerably softened my stance on Richard's solo career. When you hear songs like A Song for the Lovers or New York (check out that nasty groove!) in rockier arrangements, without a single string, they instantly become a hundred times better. ASFTL, in particular, would have been a lot better had Richard not drenched it in violins and tried to turn it into the next Bittersweet Symphony. Which leads me to this conclusion: Richard's solo career has been marred by overly polished, generic production that has hidden great songs beneath bland arrangements.
Take, for example, Bright Lights off Human Conditions. In its current state, it's quite embarrassing, complete with a feeble attempt at a guitar riff, and obnoxiously idiotic bongos. But, with the right production, it could've been a monster, with a savage groove that'd be able to move cities. I'm not sure whether it's Chris Potter or Richard who's at fault for dumbing down these songs, but I'm gonna guess that it's Richard. There's a good album hidden underneath all of his solo records (except UNOS), but, frustratingly, they're never fully realized because of a need to have that clean, commercial sound.

Good album. Nothing more, nothing less. Was expecting a little more but there are a few really nice tunes on here, my favourites are:
Out Of My Body This Is How It Feels They Don't Own Me These People Ain't The Future So Bright
They are all great, there are a couple of decent songs and a couple duds in my opinion.
One thing Ashcroft will always have going for him is the voice, my favourite vocalist apart from Liam and he delivers on this album brilliantly.

Some good stuff on it (This Is How It Feels), some really awful stuff (Out Of My Mind). Pretty average overall.

Not feeling this at all. Just another over-produced, cliched Ashcroft solo album. Some catchy choruses and his voice is still majestic (if sometimes a little forced, like he's trying to sound emotional), but the dance beats are just embarrassing, and the lyrics aren't much better. It's solid, and that's more than you can say for a lot of his albums, but it's never truly inspired. Richard's talent - still shining through the cracks - just doesn't suit domestic bliss. His genius shone when fuelled as much by loneliness, anger, and damaged ego as it was by melody and craft. He's still got the melody, the craft is within reach, but his ego has become comfortable and it's destroyed his creativity. You just know he'll take an easy, sting-soaked collection of "deep anthems" to routinely feed his ego over actually opening himself to criticism or taking risks every single time. Great voice and refound consistency aside, it ultimately still feels like an album done out of habit rather than need. Not terrible, but slightly disappointing. I'd say 6/10, achieved almost exclusively through This is How it Feels and They Don't Own Me. Hmmmm. He is 20 years older as well remember!

He's on BBC breakfast tomorrow for a 'big' announcement. I'd guess a tour.
Take a look at @richardashcroft's Tweet:

I'm pretty sure it's UK/European tour announcement. Announcement on Tuesday, pre-sale on Thurday and general sale on Friday. No source at all, but just my guess.
It's 6 years since when I saw him and met last time!

Just watched him at BBC Breakfast. "Big" announcement was that he's playing in Liverpool Echo Arena and O2 Arena in London in December with a orchestra.

He needs to lose the shades and scarfs. Richard looks like he stole Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's sunglasses from Top Gun and a leftover Al Capone blazer from 1932. It amazes me how often Richard and Liam can whiff on an outfit.

I liked his "rough" look from a few months ago, when he did the acoustic gigs in Switzerland. He looks like a totally different person here!
