From the same thread: "I should just sit in dignified silence. That would be the cool thing to do. I'm not that guy though. Hmm, if we're going to bury the Verve maybe we should do it in full frontal acrimony.... Got knows the real story is a fun one... No. No matter what shit has been stank about since, the music, the commitment, the fans still deserve respect. I would be very sad, were it not for the fact that my output visible or not, brings me more joy and satisfaction by the year. Harping on about history is for those who are stuck there. Kind of sick of being dragged back into it. Long live James, apparently." Interesting comment about the reunion while making UH: "My instructions were "fuck it up". I didn't, I'm a Lindsay Buckingham fan, I took that approach. Slightly fucked up but with taste. Basically, I think he panicked about having the kind of material that sounds like... well, his solo output. It got to a point where UH had just plateaued. Bittersweet was a locked loop that went nowhere, lucky man had some great Tongy lines but if was lumpy. His hubris hadn't kicked enough then to realise that releasing it as it was simply wasn't going to wash. Like I say, he WAS at the top of his game then, and a Brian Wilson or whoever he wants to name check will realise - "you know what, I need X or y to come and bring this to wee tune to life". In this case he was writing with a sound in mind and he'd sacked the guy who made that sound - but he wasn't too big to swallow his pride and ring sacked guy. I suppose it's an idea most find anachronistic and seemingly he also now, but you know, whatever the music takes is what it takes. Obviously he retrospectively wishes Urban Hymns was more like Keys To The World and hadn't taken over dim and distant 1997, you know that big year for britpop solo balladeers." Kind of off track but is Nick basically saying the rest of the band papered over what were fairly standard tunes (aside from the traditional Verve stuff like Rolling People etc) to sound exceptional on Urban Hymns? Pretty much yeah; the four-man lineup of Ashcroft, Salisbury, Jones and Tong recorded most of it but found it lacking, and so Nick was called back to "fuck it up" as he so nicely puts it. According to wiki this is also around the time they switched producers from Youth to Chris Potter and with him the band wrapped it up. Also "big year for britpop solo balladeers" makes me chuckle, heh.

Well, that was quite weak. EDIT: low-quality streaming link for whose who lost it on the radio. Hopefully it'll be on YouTube soon. vocaroo.com/i/s03kod17tmEi

The main problem is that it sounds like a million other songs from his solo career. I bet Richard can write a tune like this in ten minutes...

Songs of Experience and They Don't Own Me sound promising. Out of My Body starts off very interesting but then gets bland.

I'm still blown away when I listen to those early Verve EPs and albums. I wish Richard would return to some of that sound but I guess that's what separates solo Richard from Verve Richard.

The problem with Richard Ashcroft is that he has absolutely terrible taste. An amazing singer, granted, and a once decent melodist, but if he can't recognise how shite this new stuff is then he might as well retire.

His new stuff to me sounds like the output of a man who doesn't himself listen to music much. I mean, what are his influences there? There are none. He's just going into the studio clueless.

Apparently tuned down from A to G when played live. Still a nice song, the melody has several good hooks and is quite varied considering it's just 4 chords.

Maybe there's still hope for this album.
I'm not sure I can bear another major disappointment after Coldplay and The Stone Roses.
