The Smiths' debut album was released exactly 33 years ago today! Still hard to beat the trio of Still Ill, Hand in Glove and What Difference Does It Make one after each other on the record. Some of my favorites guitar moments by Johnny with Morrissey's finest lyrics on top.

Finished his book today. Really great and fun to read, so many great stories. Damn I really must see him live while he's still rocking

Thanks @driver7 and carlober. I was watching this year's RSD release list last night, but didn't notiece The The's and The Smiths. It'll be tough to get both of them, but my local record shop never let me down!

carlober would you mind writing a small summary of Marr's amps? I'm sure you have some info I'm currently in the middle of choosing my next amp and it seems so hard decision because I want it to do justice to all genres I like. I basically know which amps Johnny used but I'm not sure how he used them and on which records. My current options are Vox AC15/30, Roland JC-40 (120 too big), Blackstar HT-40 (considering other models too) and some Fender tubes.

I don't know a great deal about amps to be fair! As you may already know, Johnny's go-to amp is the Fender Twin Reverb. He's been using that exclusively for years now. In the early Smiths years he used a Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 and a Vox AC-30 as well. The Fender Twin is very versatile ad it's well known for its superb clean tones. The Jazz Chorus has a slightly more "coloured" sound (if that makes sense) and its built-in chorus was essential for many dreampop and shoegaze bands of the late '80s/early '90s. The Vox AC-30 (and the AC-15 too) is perfect for a crunchier, quintessentially British sound. That said, I believe that he's used the Fender Twin Reverb about 95% of the times since the Queen is Dead era. He's been seen using Deluxe Reverbs as well but yeah, the Twin is the one. The Twin Reverb, the JC-120 and the AC-30 are some heavy beasts though, in terms of weight but in terms of price too! Also... those big boys are LOUD. You can't plug your guitar into an AC-30 and keep it quiet. You'll have to crank it up if you want to achieve the best out of it. The AC-15 and JC-40 are tamer than their bigger brothers I suppose. I think I've heard some people complaining about the JCs being hissy or noisy, I don't know how much of that is true. And while built-in effects are good, a chorus pedal is always more versatile and practical imho. About the AC-15, like the 30 it's a bit dirtier. Its clean sound is actually kind of clean-ish, there's some always some crunch going on, at least with humbucker pickups. I know nothing about the Blackstar although I assume it's more on the crunchier side too?

I know nothing about the Blackstar although I assume it's more on the crunchier side too? Thanks Blackstar is a tube amp but it also has some "modelling technique" in it. If I understood correctly it has 2 channels and 4 modes. The channels are "British" and "American" which means you're able to get both British crunch and Fender cleans out of it. I've heard lots of positive reviews about it, although there have been some issues with them and apparently they aren't that simple to fix in case there's some problem. I've dreamt of having a Twin Reverb but 85w is simply too much On the other hand, amps like AC15 might not have enough clean headroom so if I play it louder I won't be able to play cleans on loud volume. JC-40 sounds like a dream but I wonder if it's too clean and won't give me good "rock tone" even with pedals. Also the price is quite high for a solid state amp. Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb (Silverface) is what I'm currently looking for. Should be pretty similar to Twin Reverb, lots of headroom but since it's only 22w I might be able to crank it enough so it starts breaking and give me natural overdrive. But all of them are really expensive for normal price so I'm looking for used offers or sales

But she's not the girl in the picture. Maybe it's just a still from a music video and she's a sort of an actress. Anyway the album is pretty much confirmed at this point. I've just seen that Johnny liked some comments which were guessing that a new record is coming

Interesting to see Johnny using Deluxe Reverbs. Because that's the amp I've been mainly looking for the past couple of weeks. Their prices are up the skies, though.

Yeah, he's used them in the past as well, especially during the early '00s I think. Also, you can see a Marshall head in one of the Insta pic that I linked above ( this one). Now that's even more interesting In the same pic there's also a Yamaha SG1000 guitar (he's used it on the Playland album too, If I'm not mistaken). While we're at it... in the first 'Hey Angel' pic he's shared on Instagram ( this one) you can spot one of his faithful Fender Jaguars and the legendary 'Meat is Murder' Gibson Les Paul with a Bigsby vibrato unit.

Never noticed that Les Paul, such a cool guitar And yeah, it's interesting that he's using Marshalls. Looking forward to hear the new stuff he's working on.

Microsoft has just released a gorgeous short film where Johnny talks about creativity. Lots of interesting studio footage and a few wonderful sound clips (I wonder if some of them come from the new album).

By the way, the 12-string Martin acoustic he's playing in that pic is the one he used to record the main riff of 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' (and also for 'Get the Message' by Electronic)
