A thread devoted to the eventual World Champions, England. Come on England!!
I'll kick off with this bit of nostalgia, because surely our current squad is at least better than this (shall be giving this a view later on tonight, innit).

Which is the Group of Death? Group D or Group G? I'm leaning towards Group G, but I honestly think that label could go either way....
Group D:
Uruguay Italy Costa Rica England
Group G:
Germany Ghana USA Portugal

Well Germany and Portugal are established and hpghana a African powerhouse , USA as usual overrated ... Group d. Outside of Italy , it's a tossup , I'd say there both tough to get out of , as Ghana can upset Germany Porto apple art ( Porto ). Where as in our group ( yes I'm English in soccer ) Italy is a given the battle for second is wide open , so I'd say both are tough but overall g is true group of deTh ya know ?

I just watched One Night in Turin on Netflix, which documents England's progression to the 1990 World Cup Semi-Final. It's a good watch for those who have Netflix, to get into the mood on the figurative eve of Brazil 2014. Although, I was hoping for more coverage of how that became a symbolic turning point in the English game, which was alluded to but would have been more interesting to have given it more depth - especially considering the dire times of Heysel and Hillsborough and rampant hooliganism of the 80s. How far we've come since those darkened days, eh?

Hillsborough was NOT hooliganism, unless you want to believe the lies of the establishment and continue to rub salt into the wounds of the victims families.

I guess I didn't phrase that sentence well enough. I was just listing it as an example of troubled times the game was going through. I didn't mean to have it sound like I was calling Hillsborough an act of hooliganism. In one of the early pages of the Extra Time thread, I did write a wee paragraph on Hillsborough and the docu that I watched. The coverup has been utterly shameful.

Hart
Johnson Cahill Jagielka Baines
Gerrard Henderson
Rooney Welbeck Lallana
Sturridge
Welbeck in the middle of the attacking midfielders as he's the most disciplined and would be best at closing down Pirlo and trying to stop him.

This England team is just so uninspiring, although not nearly as bad as 2008 - 2010.
England's best generation in recent times was 1996 - 2002, after which we've been dire.
Owen and Becks in their prime, Shearer, Sheringham, Adams, Campbell, Seaman, McManaman
1998 was the first World Cup I followed, and it's still my favorite one. That match against Argentina had everything, shame about the final result, but still one of the best matches I've ever watched.
I expect Roy to get more out of this squad than Fabio, who was abysmal in 2010.
Also, Rooney has yet to score in a World Cup match.....he's so overrated.

Found my England kit from 1998 with Shearer #9 on the back. 16 years old and oddly enough still fits me. Forever Young, innit. Come on England!!

Capello is a great manager, one of the greatest. His failure was probably a result of a clash of cultures. Italian football teams are used to the sort of army bootcamp methods of managers there, while the overpaid pampered twats like Terry and co. couldn't deal with it and rebelled. Sven was by far a worse manager I think - a lot of talent there and he couldn't manage it and played the most insipid uninspired football ever against smaller sides. And his biggest crime most notably ignoring the supreme talents of arguably England's best midfielder of the last 30 years, Paul Scholes.

Can't see us getting out of the group stages. Italy will have us, Uruguay will most likely have us and, judging by the recent friendlies, Costa Rica will too.
We could only hold Ecuador to 2-2, and the Honduras match ended in a pathetic goalless draw. Our problem is that the likes of Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney are getting to the age where they're being filtered out - but there's nobody that can replace them.
So we either have established players that look knackered on the pitch, or new talent that have way too little experience.

I hate international games, unless it's a competition that matters (World Cup, Euros...). But remember, those pre-matches weren't about winning, they were about fostering a team cohesion and trying out tactics and systems. I think we have the 2nd hardest group, with the USA's being the Group of Death. We're just so distinctly average. There's no soul or passion in this England team, and there hasn't been since that 1996 - 2002 golden generation. And Glen Johnson at Right Back? Jesus wept. It's going to be tough, but I think 2nd place in the group is dooable. Anything less will have to be seen as a failure, I don't care how tough you consider the group. Rooney needs to step up. If he disappoints, yet again, I hope he gets aggressively booed, especially if he collects another red card for his typical stupidity. Also, before someone inevitably brings it up, it's a fallacy to suggest that the decline in the national team is related to the influx of foreign players. That's not true at all, and is another myth perpetuated by the blathering idiot, Sepp Blatter.

We're putting forward what feels like a new generation of England squad and while there's a few standout good performers (Baines, Sterling, Wilshere etc), the team as a whole plays in such a way that you'd think they'd only just met. The friendlies showed us playing in a sort of "half-arsed attack...get counter attacked...lose momentum...let opponent dominate" cycle that was just excruciating to watch.

Also, Rooney has yet to score in a World Cup match.....he's so overrated. i think most people rate him accurately, we know he isn't the player he was a couple of years back and is not consistent enough, but on his day still has the ability to be the match winner.

What's everyone's thoughts before today's match vs. Italy?
Can we get revenge on them from Euro 2012 - where we got knocked out by penalties (how typical) in the dullest match I have ever watched?
Come on England!!

England vs. Italy - Half Time Thoughts:
I'm very impressed with our first half performance. I celebrated so hard, actually 3 seconds before it was tapped home cos Rooney's pass had pinpoint accuracy.
Sturridge looks immense, Chelsea were morons for selling the lad to Liverpool. Dare I say he's the new Michael Owen, with potential to be even better?
Are we onto a new Golden Generation after the shit that we endured over the last 8 years? That's a discussion for another day, though.
Hope the 2nd half continues in the same vein. I haven't seen England play with such vibrancy in donkey years. England have already played better than their entire performances in 2010 & 2012 combined. Get in!!
Italy are playing well, too. Has been one hell of a first half. Could go either way. Should we leave with a defeat, I'll remain optimistic about progressing to the Last 16 based on the performance.
BELIEVE!!
