As the only person on this entire site with the authority to comment on the subject I cast my vote for..........YOKO ONO!
Often considered an irritant, Yoko was an integral presence on the final 3 albums. When she left The Beatles it was with a heavy heart that she began what remains to this day for me the greatest of all ex-Beatles solo albums; Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band. On this album she re-wrote the rules of engagement and rocked like only a small, freaky Japanese woman with large, droopy breasts could. Paul could never do that. His tits were small and firm. So, we've settled it, Yoko it is. You can close the thread now.

This debate makes almost zero sense. Paul by far has the most post-Beatles output, while John gets the "I died too young" bias. George was, and is, always going to be remembered as the guy that had unsung talent. And Ringo... well... For me they are all too different to choose a clear cut "best". Plastic Ono Band is the only top quality Lennon solo album. Even Imagine is patchy - for example, How Do You Sleep is just a plodding dirge of bitter ramblings. And his solo career's derivative nature is starting to show on this album too. No doubt, a sprinkling of great songs here and there (emblematic of the Beatles solo careers) but way more boring than what Harrison and McCartney were doing. Here's a great article on Paul McCartney though by The Quietus. Hits a few hard truths in it too. thequietus.com/articles/20371-paul-mccartney-live-the-beatlesIt's cliche to say but I think "Imagine" the album is rather awesome and fun. Like Lennon said, it was basically Plastic Ono Band LP but sugar coated for a larger mass appeal. It worked wonders and was a big time seller. This was the solo John people wanted when the Beatles ended for good or for worse. I really enjoy Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, Oh My Love, How?, Oh Yoko! Solid mix of anthems, love, bitterness, politics and fun. It's a shame Lennon went off the rails after this album. Sometime In New York was a huge misfire and Mind Games is kinda..........blah!

I'm probably being unfair as I'm not a fan as it reminds me of latter Oasis's pathetic attempts to replicate that sound!

People like to declare George as having the BEST post Beatles career but after All Things Must Pass and maybe Living In The Material World, it's extremely spotty and underwhelming.

For me, Lennon wrote the best song "Jealous Guy", Harrison the best album "All Things Must Pass" and McCartney has been the most consistent.
And Ringo is Ringo.

Of course it plods, it's a brooding song with, as you say, a very bitter narrative that obviously came from a very dark place. You can't expect it to skip along to Sixth chords and slap bass, can you?

So, what you doing, just thinking about Dawn?*blusters* No. I'm not thinking about Dawn, actually. Just... I'm not thinking about Dawn!Okay, okay... It's just that, I hope you don't embarrass yourself again with her. Well, I'm not planning to, Keith. Right? I mean, that'll be the third time you've asked her out, and the woman's said no, so...*blusters* Well, I'm not gonna do anything -- that, as far as I'm concerned, is ancient history. Alright, alright...... Word of warning though: if you are planning to try and nail Dawn, for a third time while she's back, then you heard what she's said: she's going back the day after the party so ... you've not got long if you wanna try and... *joins left forefinger to thumb and pushes through right forefinger*
