The National performed a new song last night. "The Day I Die". Pretty rocking tune and reminds me of their early days between 2000 and 2003. i like it. it's kind of difficult to make out the lyrics but yes it is a rocking tune and it has a nice melody. i'm kind of surprised matt has kept the longer hair, i figured he would cut it short again once he resumed his duties with the national

Lennon2217, @id1edreamer, our (my) Matt did it again with "Mr. November" tonight! Jumping off from stage and got into the crowds. Must have been a nightmare for the security. They wanted to start with a new song, but they failed, but they did play 2 new songs later on. I think the new album is (nearly) done, so fingers crossed that we'll hear more new stuff soon.

Album almost done? They make any comments about it during the show? Last I heard they were demoing and road testing material to properly record in the fall. But surprise LP releases are all the rage these days.

Forgot to say, that the song which was played just before they came on stage was, "Please please please Let Me Get What I Want". I would have cried if I was there.

We are excited to announce that Day of the Dead, our years in the making celebration of the Grateful Dead’s music, will be released by 4AD on May 20th, 2016. Curated by Aaron and Bryce, Day of the Dead is a compilation of Grateful Dead covers featuring over 60 artists, 59 tracks and lasting almost 6 hours. The album will be released digitally, on a 5 x CD and as a limited edition vinyl boxed set, with all profits going to the Red Hot Organization’s mission to fight AIDS/HIV and related health issues around the world.
The songwriting of the Dead has always inspired us and this record is meant to celebrate their legacy. Growing up, the Grateful Dead was the first music that Aaron and Bryce bonded over. Their first-ever jam session was with Bryan, playing the Dead’s “Eyes of the World” in Bryan’s parent’s attic in Ohio. Now, so many years later, Aaron, Bryce, Scott and Bryan make up part of the house band featured on many of the record’s songs. Matt has joined his bandmates to interpret “Peggy-O,” “Morning Dew” and “I Know You Rider.”
We are also excited that a Day of the Dead live performance will take place this summer at Eaux Claires Festival (August 12-13), featuring some of the musicians who appear on the record including Bruce Hornsby, Jenny Lewis, Justin Vernon, Lucius, Matthew Houck, The National, Richard Reed Perry, Ruban Nielson, Sam Amidon and Will Oldham.
Working with such a diverse group of talented musicians and friends on this project was so much fun and we can’t wait to share the music with you. In the meantime, 4AD has put together a Spotify playlist matching the Day of the Dead tracklist which you can listen to play.spotify.com/user/4ad_official/playlist The full Day of the Dead tracklist and more info on the project is available www.dayofthedeadmusic.com/------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is very interesting, Lennon2217 and @id1edreamer. "Morning Dew" covered by The National: "New Speed Way Boogie" covered by Courteny Barnet: Picked this album today, gonna take a few ludes and listen to it..... Thanks.

Always optimistic.

When will Matt finally shave that beard and cut his hair?
Anyway, my most favourite their album (also it made me got into them in 2007) "Boxer" fits these cold and dark days. Perfect.

So, I finally listened to The National after I knew for years that I had to check them out because I knew they would be my cup of tea. I had High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me somewhere on my laptop and started with High Violet. I completely fell in love after the first listen and I've been listening to it on repeat for 2 months now. After listening to Trouble will find me for a few times I was convinced that I prefer High Violet eventhough I instantly loved I need my girl. The more I listend to TWFM I realised that I loved that album equally as much. When I listened to Fireproof a couople of days ago I had to cry because it was just so...beautiful and sad in a way. Then, yesterday, I found this video and I was blown away:
I just love everything about them, the voice of course, the lyrics are so relatable - for me personally at least, and the music is just beautiful. I can't wait to check out Boxer after reading your comments on that one. And of course, I'm looking forward to the new album!

I discovered them by an accident while listening to npr.org (they have great archive of all those gigs/sessions/music documentary) in 2007 on one evening. They were broadcasting The National gig from Philadelphia and I completely fell in love with them. Boxer was the first album of theirs I listened to. I love everything in this album from start to finish. I also recommend you to listen to their 3rd album "Alligator" which came out 2 years before Boxer which is as great as Boxer.
