Have you heard "Boxer"? It was the first National album I heard and which made me got into them. It's the darkest National album and I think you'll like it. I'm going to give it a listen. I talked about the Elbow comparison, and I mean that in the most flattering way. Elbow are one of my favourites, and I see similarities in that even though they had a smash hit high selling album (aforementioned Seldom Seen Kid, and High Violet), they never lost their artistic integrity with that album - certainly, when I bought it, and then listening to it and other National songs from before, you can tell there's no concerted effort to gut their songs, and hollow them out for the mainstream. It seems like the mainstream found them, rather the other way round.I've said it before, with their 5th album High Violet from 2010 the world finally found them. Their 4th album Alligator is brilliant as well and this is one of my all time favourite songs by theirs. and I do agree about Bryan Devendorf. Devendorf twins and Dessner twins do fantastic job. and Frightened Rabbit's current album was produced by nobody, but Aaron Dessner.

cosigned on devendorf. i have said all along given who their frontman is it's easy to overlook the rest of the band. but he really is a fantastic drummer, listen closely to some of the live performances and you'll notice some really great little fills he adds in that aren't on the records.

In terms of melody, is it or me, or are there wee similarities between Frightened Rabbit and The National? From High Violet - the one I know (as the populist I am!), Conversation 16 and Bloodbuzz Ohio struck me in terms of how great a drummer Devendorf is.

And speaking of Devendorf, listen to his drum work:

Received a pre-sale code yesterday and was purchasing my tickets this morning at 10:02. They only accept a credit card and as I don't own one, couldn't get the ticket. Fingers crossed for general sale on Friday.
Pre-sale sucks and why don't they have another option like paypal or bank transfer?

Great drummer. Fantastic singer. my wife said as we were leaving the EL VY concert: 'wow, what a great voice matt has!' speaking of EL VY. i am 100% positive that matt said 'no time to crank the sun' is about marriage. now, i'm wondering, was that song originally slated for 'sleep well beast', before the EL VY project came to be? mimmihopps , Lennon2217 what do you guys think?

Pre-sale sucks and why don't they have another option like paypal or bank transfer? not a good look that they made you guys over there pre-order the album to receive the pre-sale passcode, only to make you pay with a type of payment that you are not accustomed to. at the very least they could have/should have given you a warning ahead of time that you would need one of those cards, so that you could be prepared. going to give the band the benefit of the doubt here, as it was probably management's/ticketbastard's doing. signed up to receive a passcode via text message for the pre-sale, well tickets go on sale here in 2 hrs. 20 minutes, still have yet to receive one.

got in the first few rows of the balcony, happy with those. there are pit tickets on stubhub right now for around $500 each and orchestra tix are going for as much as $325. glad to see that only the 'verified fans' got in on the pre-sale.

With pre-sale code or no code, I would have pre-ordered the album anyway. What they meant with pre-sale is all for good - to let "real" fans get tickets on pre-sale to avoid re-sell and all those pre-sale tickets purchasers have to take their ID with them to the gig, but what's the point if you can't purchase ticket without a credit card? I love to see bands and go to gigs quite often, but I get annoyed with these new type of ticket purchasing more and more. Take me back to the time when we had to be in a queue at front of a ticket shop. At least it works fair unlikely queuing in a digital queue. I'm gonna try to get mine on Friday, but if I fail again, so it be.

matt's formula for songwriting: take a bunch of lyrics that don't really make any sense but rhyme, and put them over a catchy melody. mix it with a little booze. then take all that and throw it in a blender and presto, you have an instant smash record! hell, the same formula worked for noel for years

Just got my tickets for AFAS Live (Former Heineken Music Hall). My 4th The National gig. I'm seeing Mogwai and The National in same week. Life is good.

They added the second Amsterdam show as the first night was sold out within an hour. Exactly same thing happened as Oasis's last Amsterdam date in 2009, same venue, first night sold out within an hour, then second night has been announced shortly after.
I'll pass the second night as it'll be the 3rd gig in a week for me.

If I can't make the second night, I can still sell it.

mimmihopps, between your gigs and my gigs we're both going to be very busy this fall, won't we? Autumn. Indeed now I have 4 gigs in October, 3 in a week and of course I do still have to work between these gigs! and you'll experience your first ever Weller gig, a night after The National.

...on a thursday and friday night, respectively! is that like the ultimate rock 'n' roll weekend, or what? I'm seeing Mogwai on Sunday and The National on Wednesday and Thursday. It's unreal how big they became. I saw them in Paradiso (capacity 1500) 7 years ago and now they're playing 2 nights of 5500 people each. I'm so happy for them that the world finally found them, but at the same time there're more and more people who only know 1 or 2 songs by theirs and come to their gig to having a beer and "chat" with their friends. FFS I can't even imagine myself doing that. When I go to a gig, I go to a gig and when I want to have a drink and chat with my friends, I go to a cafe or invite/visit them. For me one or another.

Feels like a 3 way conversation sometimes and that's definitely not the first time I posted those thoughts.
