I really dont think Weezer is overrated. I think hey are dismissed by most people. They have two albums in the 90's that are held in high regard but most of the rest of there catalog is disregarded by music fans as nothing more than radio friendly pop rock. I personally find Weezer command an undeservedly large fanbase for such output. Outside their debut albums singles plus 'My Name Is Jonus' I've failed to hear anything I find particularly impressive. Too cut a long story short, 'Alternative Rock' has been done much better elsewhere. I think Weezer had two fanbases. One was the crowd that gravitated to the songs about being socially awkward and trying to find love on the first two albums. The second group was the teenage kids that were pulled in by the big choruses on the 4 minute radio friendly pop/rock songs on their later albums. They definitely werent a game changing band but at least for me I could identify more to the guy singing on those first two albums than almost anything else at the time. From Pinkerton Favorite post 90's Weezer song

As much as I'm delighted at how many people love Bruce Springsteen, I'm surprised at how many people who don't get him. Even if you don't like his music, surely there's got to be some respect there? He's like music's very own John Steinbeck. Characters with uncertain futures and dead end jobs, and his imagery is great too, often depicting desolated America which fits the mood of his characters. I think the tension between the grim present and a feared for future makes some of his tunes relentlessly grim, but he often tempers that well with his mainstream radio hits which are pure pop perfection - these songs are a bit similar to Oasis in that the songs don't exist outside of this world like usual pop (which describes the world like a kids cartoon show). Like Oasis, it realises the grim reality but that you can make good of your life. In a political sense, he's important to my perceptions of America - it's very easy for people in this country to think of America as folk who live the life of extreme materialism, wealth and glamour. Naturally, because its so attractive, many of my mates think it is utopia and even SOUND American. We're inundated with this idealistic and grotesque perception of America - the MTVisation of America so to speak. Springsteen always seems to sing about the desolate and forgotten places where those who live have been forgotten by their country and their own people. He's like those other true American artists before him from Bob Dylan to Woody Guthrie and way before who sing about a country from their own perspective and its a perspective of real life and the insecurities around it rather than the deluded mass media interpretation of it. But crucially, singing about such insecurities and uncertainties makes him a universal artist and not one that is restricted to the country he is from. His best song. I dont know how anyone can be a fan of The Killers, The National, Arcade Fire, Gas Light Anthem, Ryan Adams, The War on Drugs, etc and not like Springsteen. His influence is undeniable on those bands. The Killers made a Springsteen album(Sams Town). The Gas Light Anthem tried with 59 sound. The National released a cover on an official release (Mansion on the Hill). Keep The Cars Running was Win Butlers attempt at writing a Bruce song. I think a lot of people that dont like Springsteen have never really listened to Springsteen. I think some people have the idea of him as the guy from the 80's singing Born in the USA and Dancing in the Dark. Mixed up on that 80's synth pop is one dark album. There isnt one happy song on that record. He's obviously not for everyone but I think he's one of those artist that people have a built in preconception of what his music actually is. The perception for some is that he's some outlandish boorish American who is like 'WOOH YEAH! AMERICA RULES' and bangs the drum for the country. They think, for example, Born In The USA is a patriotic anthem! The casual observer has no idea about Springsteen - NO IDEA! He's a lot more subtle than some give him credit for. The fact we are praising him for so much - yet haven't even mentioned his live performances - is testament to what a true great he is.

Great posts on this thread. Best thread in a while in my opinion. Good discussions.
Springsteen I respect. He is one of the most influential songwriters of the past 30 or so years. I can recognize that he is good and I think he is good, but I just can't really ever love him or listen to him on the reg. His influence is vast and I love bands like The Killers (Sam's Town great, but they took it a bit too far recently), War on Drugs, and Ryan Adams. Like Petty, (although I respect Bruce more) I just can't love either of them. Probably generational thing but a lot of the time Springsteen just sounds so cheesy and not in a lovable way. Gimme Ryan Adams over them any day.
Rankings of American 90's Rock n' Roll Bands. Sorry fans of Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, RHCP, etc.
1. Pavement 2. Weezer 3. Wilco 4. Sonic Youth 5. Pixies 6. Nirvana
I guess this is unpopular on here but Kanye West actually legitimately could be a genius. A lot of you take his whole shitick so seriously, that's kinda the point... He has a huge and laughable size ego, but his musical catalog is outstanding. He's a character and a rock star even though he doesn't make rock n' roll. One of the top five artists of the past 10-15 years, like it or not I don't really give a fuck its the truth.
The Doors bless them are a great band and Morrison is funny but really he's a drunk fool. I love the music that the band makes but Morrison is very hit and miss. When he is on, he is ON, but sometimes he's just eeehh. Lou Reed is the better poet.
Prefer Nina Simon to Aretha Franklin.
Television is the best CBGB band.

- I loved (and still do) Nu-Metal
Limp Bizkit- Significant Other Linkin Park- Hybrid Theory Papa Roach- Infest (and I still like their later stuff)
All great albums which I still listen to from time to time and party like it's 2000 all over again!
- Kasabian have been shit since their first album
- Brought a Pixies album and hated it
- Ryan Adams is the greatest solo artist ever
- I really love H.I.M and don't give a shit how cheesy people think they are or how they're perceived.

This is probably a veeeeery unpopular opinion but I don't give a fuck. I think Jimi Hendrix is a very overrated guitarist and I think there are better ones. I don't really care for him. I don't really like most of his stuff either. Who?

I've heard the craziest opinions and at this point nothing really shocks me.....Nirvana overrated, the Beatles overrated, etc.
But the absolute most insane musical opinion I've ever heard and leaves me with no hope for the species is: Jakob Dylan is more talented than his father, Bob Dylan.
That's not my opinion, to clarify.
God bless.

Springsteen just sounds so cheesy and not in a lovable way. Gimme Ryan Adams over them any day. Have you ever listened to anything pre Born in the USA? If not go listen to the albums Darkness on the Edge of Town and Nebraska. If you still think he's cheesy there is nothing I can do but his albums pre mid 80's s synthesizer are completely different.

I think that Kinks are overrated. They are ok but they sound like Paul McCartney's side project. Like that he was giving his best songs to Beatles and what is left he gives to Kinks. They have few great songs but when i listen full album, i really dont get it. People take pictures of each other sha la la la la. Lame as fuck, like something that Paul will write in 10 seconds as parody to the Beatles.

Yeah and I definitely prefer that Bruce over the later material. Still haven't listened to all his material though, think I haven't heard any modern stuff from him since The Rising, which I thought was actually pretty good. When his anthems hit they are great but I think he's acoustic stuff is a bit more consistent/enjoyable for me. My top 2 albums from him Born to Run and Nebraska. Might give them another shot see if I can't fall in love with them a bit more now that its summertime.

Post the Rising the studio albums are hit and miss for me with Magic being the best of the bunch. Rising was the 9/11 album Magic is the Iraq war/Bush America album. If you like BTR and Nebraska you should like Darkness too. It's not as operatic as BTR or stark as Nebraska. It's somewhere in the middle.

This is probably a veeeeery unpopular opinion but I don't give a fuck. I think Jimi Hendrix is a very overrated guitarist and I think there are better ones. I don't really care for him. I don't really like most of his stuff either. Who? Well. First off as I said guitarists are a personal taste , I also think JIMI is overated ( by that I mean the fact is that he universally hailed best ever ) first off off for speed and tecnicali brilliance eddie Van Halen and ritchie Blackmore are faster and more technical jimmy page played more riffs for the ages , and even if you use the argument hendrix lasted from 67-71. Page in a 4 year span still came up with more guitar riffs and p,ayed just as well stevie Ray vaughn played hendrix better than hendrix , his 9 minute little wing is the best version i ever heard THIS IS NOT A KNOCK ON JIMI , BUT TO ME AND OTHERS he is not the all time best there at least as good , and in the guitarists I mentioned above BETER , TO ME AND ALOT OF PEOPLE Ps In guitar player and guitar world magazines , one voted by fans and one by musicians EDDIE VAN HALEN WAS VOTED NUMBER 1 And this was in before the announced tour or LP of Van halen in 2015 .....and that don't make eddie or the rest better to you , but to a lot out there jimi is great , but not nessesarrlly the best to everyone , and so what ? That's what makes debates fun

The thing that I think I enjoy most about Jimi is you can just FEEL the his soul coming out of that guitar. Perfect combination of blues and rock n'roll. Electric performer and thing about him is that yeah, Valen Halen, etc are more technically gifted and Page has more variety, but NO ONE will ever sound like Jimi. He was born to play guitar like no other person in history. Who could have made Voodoo Child (Slight Return)? No one else past, present, future.
