DM for me.
WTSMG is one hell of an album, but DM wins by a nose. Rock n Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic, Slide away all on the same album is immense. I've always assumed its most Oasis fans favourite album, surprised when i see people rate it 5th or whatever, just dont get that, WTSMG is the only album that comes close, but still short IMO

Rock n roll star > Hello Shaker maker < Roll with it Live forever > Wonderwall Up in the sky < DLBIA Columbia > Hey now supersonic > swamp song 1 (add 2 as well to even up track list) bring it on down < some might say cigarettes and alcohol > cast no shadow digsys dinner < shes electric Slide away > morning glory married with children < champagne supernova sad song > boneheads bank holiday
I make that 7-5, suppose its could be 6-6 then just comes down to personal taste, and for me DM takes it.

WTSMG production is great, layers, wide diversity of sounds and instruments. Alan White in drums does make a difference also. That's why I vote it. Other than this, songs are pretty even. According to "Rank the album" threads, the vs. would go: 1) Live Forever 2) Slide Away 3) Supersonic 4) Rock 'N' Roll Star 5) Columbia 6) Bring It On Down 7) Cigarettes and Alcohol 8) Married With Children 9) Degs Dinner 10) Up in the Sky 11) Shakermaker | 1) Champagne Supernova 2) DLBIA 3) Wonderwall 4) Some Might Say 5) Morning Glory 6) Cast no Shadow 7) Hello 8) She's Electric 9) Roll With It 10) Hey now! 11) (swamp songs excerpts?)
|
However, i'd prefer doing a functional comparison, since some songs are clearly "equals". Shakermaker vs Hey Now, Champagne Supernova vs Slide Away, Married with children vs She's electric, etc. But im kinda lazy for that.

Very, very hard. Two of the best and most iconic albums ever released. I have shocked myself by coming down on the side of Definitely Maybe, as good as Morning Glory is the attitude, swagger and balls of Definitely Maybe swings it for me.

If you're judging based on that table for me its: 1) Champagne Supernova..probably Oasis' best song 2) Both great songs but DLBIA is better 3) Wonderwall..Up there with Champagne supernova. 4) Some might say..love it 5) Morning glory easily 6) Cast No shadow 7) Cigarettes and alcohol easily 8) Like them both but She's electric for me 9) Roll with it 10) Hey now 11) Shakermaker overall, based on that table WTSMG wins easily imo

You can argue over which album has better songs on it, but as an "album" Morning Glory is damn near perfection. Very well produced as a cohesive unit.

I love Morning Glory as an album. Definitely Maybe has some classics on it but as an album it falls short for me. I'd go as far as to vote for Be Here Now and Dig Out Your Soul ahead of Definitely Maybe as an album. So yeah my vote goes to Morning Glory.

My 2 favourite albums of all time.
If I had to choose it would be DM just because I think the lyrics are better on that by a shade.

WTSMG is my favourite album of all time, and imo one of the best albums ever created.
The main reason why I want to see Oasis reform is to see them seriously attempt to come close to the quality of that album.

DM definitely... not maybe. Apologies.
A close call, certainly as Morning Glory contains the fantastic title tune, Cast No Shadow, Some Might Say and Don't Look Back In Anger. But as an album, it feels more like a collection of songs rather than a complete album from a working class hero that Definitely Maybe is.
Plus I think Champagne Supernova is incredibly overrated and a bit cheesy (runs away).

as great as definitely maybe is, for me it's wtsmg every time. it was the album that got me into oasis in the first place, i had recorded the cd on to a cassette tape and played it all day, every day in the car non-stop for like 2 years

WTSMG for me, it's just about perfect... good mix of pure simple rock (Hello, MG) and thought-provoking emotional songs (DLBIA, CS, Cast no shadow). most meaningful lyrics to me as well. DM is more focused on expressing the band's rock attitude (Live Forever, Rock n Roll Star) and establishing their sound, which is great thing too so no knock there

I'm gonna go with DM since it is the very first record I bought. As GIMH said above, I'd love to hear it for the first time again! But if I try to make an objective analysis, I wouldn't be able to choose one, they are superb song collections. They are among my favorite albums.

WTSMG has the better songs, flows better, and the 'worst' songs are good (Hey Now!, She's Electric)
DM is a better rock n roll album, but have some songs that I can't stand too much (Shakermaker, Bring It On Down)
I go on with WTSMG
cheers
