Not the full on rock of the previous album (the fantastic Ode To J Smith), instead harking back to traditional Travis of old. Really nice little song I think. New album is released in August - first in 5 years then.
Genuinely the nicest guys ever. Fran Healy's got a great voice and their songs never try to be spectacular like their cheap imitators Keane and Snow Patrol. Love them.

Travis are the band outside the spotlights, but keep creating great music. Great band.

Glad they are having a comeback. Some great tunes from Travis over the years! Their album The Man Who is a must in any collection

Wow Fran looks ancient. It looks like he has aged 20 years since The Man Who came out. Nice little song though.

Remember seeing them supporting Oasis back in 1997! Ha, yeah I do too. They had a good poppy set, but for most of it the crowd was chanting for Oasis!

New album is released in August - first in 5 years then. Met the band once and genuinely the nicest guys ever. Fran Healy's got a great voice and their songs never try to be spectacular like their cheap imitators Keane and Snow Patrol. Love them. You know , this a classic case of me not giving something a chance because of a name , I do it in television. . Except for Big Bang theory m most all shows I like I didn't get into at first cause the title sounded no good , bones , how I met your mother, same with bands when I was younger I just listened so I never cared but for as I got older I stupidly reverted to TV tastes and pre judged. Travis always sounded like a country name to me ... I don't like country.that much , but judging by the people who liked your post and have commented I need to rethink my judgements , thank god I liked the name OASIS. when I was in London all those years ago , lol Defiantly will check out , sorry I'm so late to party

Wow Fran looks ancient. It looks like he has aged 20 years since The Man Who came out. that was my first thought too... I used to like them A LOT up until The Invisible Band. Their first albums were great and they had quality B-Sides. I can't remember listening to their last album more than once, to be honest.

They did a great job opening for Oasis on the BHN and SOTSOG tours, especially the gig at radio city music hall in May 2000. Over the years as their music got softer and softer, I paid less attention. Their album from 2003 was when I stopped caring sadly. Overall a really good/fun band.

Interesting, I think their first album Good Memories is by far the worst - for me, it just sounds like watered down Oasis and I never bother to give it a spin. The Invisible Band was the first album I ever bought as a 10 year old in the summer of 2001 (so they play a big big part in my obsession with music) and I've loved every album by theirs since then though, and the last album Ode To J Smith in 2008 took me by surprise with the full on rock, and it wasn't derivative like the first album. I honestly don't see much in terms of difference of quality from The Man Who onwards, even the much criticised 12 Memories I like purely because it does take a much much darker riskier tone (biographical with Fran's depression and domestic abuse he witnessed as a child) than previous albums. I find their music so relaxing, melancholic and it's understated yet brilliant at the same time, and never veering off into an attempt to create stadium anthems. Their music, like the band themselves, are impossible to dislike. Fran Healy, along with Michael Stipe, for me has to be my favourite singer - an amazing voice and even at 39 he still sounds so young. In a time when the rule seems to be for bands to act like the biggest arrogant arseholes all the time (Kasabian) or whoring themselves out to celebrity mainstream culture (Coldplay - who on previous form I loved), I agree with mimmihopps it's very refreshing to see guys like Travis still keep themselves to themselves and retain a sense of modesty. And in all honesty, I find this new Travis song a much more pleasant listening experience than any of these majorly publicised acts (as mentioned above plus loads of others) latest releases. Soulful and sweet yet never feeling hollow is what their tunes are. To sum up - I love them!

For those who got turned off by 2003's 12 Memories album - it gets better! The Boy With No Name (2007) is probably my favourite Travis album, its got loads of great songs on there. The Invisible Band was the first I heard of them. Bought the album and been a fan since. I saw Fran solo a couple years ago and Travis in 2007. Met the band after the gig, they stood out and chatted a while with a few of us in the November cold, took photos. Really very nice guys. Fran gave me a setlist and they all signed it

A bit like Noel's album in that you get what you expect, but with a bit more variation in instrumentation.

There was a long gap between 12 Memories and The Boy With No Name and a lot of GREAT bands sprung up during this time period (Arcade Fire, The National, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, TV On The Radio, Kings of Leon, The Walkmen, British Sea Power, etc). Compared to those bands, Travis became too safe.

^^Have a listen to their 2008 Ode to J Smith, its darker like 12 Memories but a little edgier and more aggressive, which they do quite well

^^Have a listen to their 2008 Ode to J Smith, its darker like 12 Memories but a little edgier and more aggressive, which they do quite well I think Ode To J Smith shows how great a guitarist Andy Dunlop is - that guitar solo in Something Anything is something else. It was a big surprise when I listened to it, especially the opener Chinese Blues, must be one of the best songs they've ever done in my opinion. It came out around the same time as Dig Out Your Soul if I recall, but J Smith was, for me, a far far superior album, and even the rockers sounded more powerful and energetic than anything on Dig Out Your Soul. I've never had an issue with Travis not 'progressing' because if you can keep writing acoustic, soft sounding tunes at such a consistently high standard then it's not really a problem. It's only a problem when the quality becomes poor - like Oasis.

I've only ever listened to their well known songs, but Where You Stand is great! I'm gonna check out the rest of their discography sometime soon!

I found 12 Memories mediocre (though it has brilliant songs like Quicksand) and didn't like The Boy With No Name (I found it was too much of the same - though Three Times And You Lose is one of my favourite Travis songs) but Ode To J. Smith was great. I was blown away by Something Anything and really liked the edginess of it.
Travis is probably the first on my list of "bands I want to see", so I really hope they come to Central Europe this time.

Recently watched it myself. Loved it. Wish I had been able to see them on that tour. Really looking forward to the new album. Anybody know anything about it other than the first two tasters that were released?
