I've been thinking lately that Exile on Main Street is the perfect double album. Not a lot of songs that stand out individually as singles (Although Rocks off deserves to be a classic stones song like Brown Sugar) but musically and thematically the whole thing coheres and changes and develops along the way. I love the way the first half is the party and the last side is the hangover, I love the murky mix on which you can barely pick out individual band members even though all of them give arguably the performance of their careers. I love that it has a whole country side. It never gets old, it's loud and in your face but there is real depth to it and always more to explore. Mick Jagger's lyrics are his best and his vocal inflections actually very subtle. And I love how weary it is, yet it rocks like a motherfucker. The band sound exhausted the whole time and play harder and better than ever because of it.
Anyway, I could go on forever. Some very fine shit indeed.

Miles and Jimi together might have been the most epic collab of all time, never mind that Paul might have joined them on the bass.

My favourite album of all time is a double album so this is easy; The Wall
Although a single disk version would be more manageable and be classic after classic, you'd lose what makes The Wall so special which is the narrative. I think ever tracks plays its part. I love the riff which Gilmour ominously plays throughout the album then it comes to the fore during The Trial. Really feels like the most cohesive collection of songs ever
A single disk would look something like
In The Flesh? The Thin Ice Another Brick in the Wall pt 1 The Happiest Days of Our Lives Another Brink in the Wall pt 2 Goodbye Blue Sky Young Lust Another Brick in the Wall pt 3 Hey You Nobody Home Comfortably Numb Run Like Hell Waiting For The Worms Stop The Trial Outside The Wall
That clocks in around 52 mins but you lose so much of what makes it great,
Honourable mentions; Exile on Main Street and The White Album

Just realised that two more of my favourite albums are double;
NIN- The Fragile Ryan Adams & The Cardinals- Cold Roses,
Cold Roses actually would have been phenomenal as a single album (probably his best) whereas The Fragile needs to be 2 disks to complete the overall feel of the record

Thanks mossy. This thread now takes a fucking age to load. Is Village Green a double album? I had similar thoughts, but for Decline & Fall of the British Empire. There's definitely material from both those albums era that I think could make a great double album for both of them.

In my opinion, if in '95, Oasis had decided to make a double album in the style of Exile At Main Street, it would've kicked the shit out of all the rest.
