Everybody has mentioned some great double LP's, but are any of them really that good? I've always thought that there is really only one-great album worth of material on most of them, and the rest is just thrown on there because the bands had a stockpile of tunes to get rid of at the time. An album with nearly 30 tracks, but only 12-14 of them are actually "great", right? Just an opinion. Cheers! So Jit....what double LP do you consider great? Please throw your Dallas Cowgirls hat into the ring.

Might I also make a mention of Stadium Arcadium by RHCP, overall one of the Chili's best albums for sure.

The White Album is my favourite, definitely. But I love Mellon Collie is terrific too. Exile on Main Street is my favourite Stones album. While I can appreciate the songs of Blonde on Blonde, it's the "big" Dylan album I can do without. I love Highway 61 and Bringing It All Back Home and Blood on the Tracks but I dont think I've ever listened to all of Blonde on Blonde in one go. Call em crazy but its true.
Never heard all of the Wall or Physical Graffiti but its something I'll have to do.

Quadrophenia All Things Must Pass Isn't All Things Must Pass a triple album? Let's be honest, it's more like a double album with a bonus disc.

Incredibly different from its predecessor, Rumours.

Uses it depends on how you judge it,,,the only two double lps I consider great are physical graffiti and the wall. ..my criteria for a great double lp is if there isn't one song you skip over you know? Physical and the wall are the only two lps I don't skip a song so to me there are no fillers maybe not all great but certainly on those two ,to me they are either great or real good ,,,in Floyd's case it's more concept so Iknow there's some weird tunes but played in order it works The Wall is great but its sheer downbeatness does start to grate. Exile on Main street is perfect from start to finish. With double albums out of 20 tracks or more you are bound to get two or three duff tracks The White album has a few but the great stuff makes you forget that. The recent double albums like Foo fighters and Red Hot Chilli Peppers double albums really should have been single albums cause they simply had that many great tunes.

Mellion Collie is a great album and Smashing Pumpkins never got near to it since.

here are a few you lot have missed: bruce springsteen - the river the who - tommy genesis - the lamb lies down on broadway the allman brothers band - at fillmore east cream - wheels of fire outkast - speakerboxxx/the love below ^Some great choices here^ For me it's the White Album, Quadrophenia & randomly, not to be overlooked, Guns N' Roses - The Illusion album(s) - I class that as a double too, it was released the same day.

You'd struggle to make a decent ep out of Stadium Arcadium. It's the worst album I ever spent money on

It is probably their best produced album sonically. What hurt the Pumpkins was the 3.5 year gap between Mellon Collie and Adore. That was a fragile time in the US for music fans. The alternative rock wave was crashing, the rap-metal fusion reigned king, MTV's Total Request Live supposedly told people what was "cool" and boybands dominated the airwaves. It was a rough period to say the least. When I entered high school in 1996, bands like Oasis, Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins were all the rage. When I graduated in 2000, none of them were perceived as cool anymore despite still making good music.

But I still love the album as a whole. You made my point though . . . all Double LP's should have been cut down. Too much fluff, not enough stuff.

I have a lot of friend who argue that if you combined the best songs from Mellon Collie CD1 and CD2 you get an insanely great single album. Let's take a deeper look shall we: 1. Tonight Tonight 2. Zero 3. Bullett With Butterfly Wings 4. Here Is No Why 5. Galapogos 6. Muzzle 7. Thirty-Three 8. 1979 9. Thru the Eyes of Ruby 10. Beautiful 11. Lily (My One and Only) 12. Porcelina of the Vast Oceans * Apologies in advance if I left anyone's favorite songs out of this revised Mellon Collie tracklist.

I know it might be considered sacrilegious but I once made The White album into a single CD mix which I titled "A Doll's House" which was the working title for the White Album aka The Beatles. Here is the tracklisting: 1. Back In The USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 6. Martha My Dear 7. I'm So Tired 8. Blackbird 9. Rocky Raccoon 10. Why Don't We Do It In The Road 11. I Will 12. Julia 13. Yer Blues 14. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey 15. Sexy Sadie 16. Helter Skelter 17. Long, Long, Long 18. Revolution (Single Version) 19. Savoy Truffle 20. Cry Baby Cry 21. Hey Jude Obviously this is way too long to fit onto a single piece of vinyl but it does make for a nice CD to listen to while driving in your car. Cuts out most of the filler and gets to the most interesting work.

I like all these tracks, but not all of them are "album" worthy really.

Is that not mega? Possibly the best Beatles album ever? Double albums are definitely a double edged sword.

Favourite one by far is Bruce Springsteen's The River.
Only double album I feel that doesn't feel as if it's one album with a load of filler. A massive contrast in upbeat anthemic tunes and solemn melancholy for me,
