The same goes for Copycat Killer, I enjoyed it but it wasn't as good as I expected and it didn't need 10 episodes.

Rolf Harris Hiding In Plain Sight on ITVX. I didn't realise that he was currently on bail after more aligations earlier this year. It makes me wonder just how many more he abused who haven't come forward.

I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at the cinema last week. I went in expecting it to be alright but too long. It's almost a shame that I enjoyed the first 100 minutes or so as much as I did, because then when the third act degenerated into turgid, 1941-esque self-indulgent mulch I felt genuine disappointment, watching the great movie that could have been disappear off the screen.
Still, I had a lot of fun with it for a while. I liked the characters and the cast playing them, I sat smiling for minutes on end and occasionally laughed out loud, and I was delighted by the imagination of the production design and the visual effects. I would recommend it to others who have seen and enjoyed the first two Guardians films. I'm sure I'll watch it again sometime, but I expect that by the end of each subsequent viewing I will be left with the same hollow feeling I felt in the cinema. It was so impressive for so long, breezing right through its first and second acts with practiced ease, that I thought it couldn't possibly fall into mediocrity along with the rest of Marvel's contemporary output. But then the lack of discipline in the editing, and an increasing reliance on clichΓ©d mawkishness ensured it did just that.
*
The Escapist , I think you should know I'm running through series 1 to 10 of NuWho in preparation for November and the beginning of RTD2. Expect interminable lists and meaningless numbers typed in different colours, such as can be found below.
Series 1 listed in order of preference: 1. The Doctor Dances 9/10
2. Dalek 9/10
3. Rose 8.5/10
4. Father's Day 8.5/10
5. The Parting of the Ways 8.5/10
6. The Empty Child 8.5/10
7. Boom Town 8/10
8. The Long Game 8/10
9. The Unquiet Dead 7.5/10
10. The End of the World 7.5/10
11. Bad Wolf 7.5/10
12. The Christmas Invasion* 7/10
13. Aliens of London 7/10
14. World War Three 6.5/10
Average rating excl. 'The Christmas Invasion' = 8 Average rating incl. 'The Christmas Invasion' = 7.93
Series 2 (ongoing):
1. New Earth 8/10 2. Tooth and Claw 7/10 3. School Reunion .../10 4. ...
*If it belongs to any series--which it probably doesn't--'The Christmas Invasion' is probably more series 2 than series 1, but I've always liked the idea of the Christmas specials being like addendums. That seemed to be their function in relation to the Moffat-era series' (except for 'The Snowmen' and 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio', which prefigured the second half of series 7 and series 10 respectively).
Now is it me, or is 'Boom Town' kind of brilliant? After this last viewing I honestly felt like scoring it 8.5 out of 10, which I categorise as "very good, essential viewing, would recommend." I used the fact the script wriggles out of having the Doctor make a final decision whether or not to deliver the Slitheen back to her home planet for execution, despite them having made such a lot of the dilemma beforehand, as an excuse to cap its score at 8, but I was really very impressed by it.
I thought it was a great idea to set the episode on one of the Doctor's days off, and to show him (for the most part) just killing time with his companions in-between adventures. That's the kind of thing you long to see as a kid. In a weird way the idea of time travel and going wherever you want in space is all the more magical for containing some of the mundanity and tedium we recognise from our own everyday lives.
It was nice to have a TARDIS team for the first time as well. The show had earned it by episode 11. They'd put the time in with just Rose and the Doctor, and we'd had the emotional intensity of 'Father's Day' and Moffat's two-parter. Now was the time to enjoy a group dynamic. And thankfully, Captain Jack is less annoying than he is elsewhere; and though he mopes as usual, Micky's hurt at being left behind is an interesting angle from which to view the Doctor and particularly Rose's actions.
RTD was on top form here, I think. Presumably, the series was starting to take shape by the time he came to write this script, and he felt emboldened to just follow his nose and trust in his instincts for good character drama. Those scenes with the Slitheen and the Doctor just talking are great. Meaty ideas about crime and punishment, and how our upbringings shape who we become--and with genuine laughs too! My favourite being the superb line "Dinner in bondage... Works for me!"

theyknowwhatimean Interesting list! S1 is a series that I recognise as brilliant, but which doesn't hit my personal aesthetic preferences enough for me to love the way others do. Rose, for instance, is a gorgeously-written introduction to the show, but the council-estate realism vibe just doesn't jive with me in "Doctor Who" the way that the heightened escapism of the Moffat era did. Is that partly because, no matter how amazing RTD is at capturing voices/people (and he is amazing), he's still a university-educated middle-class bloke who insisted on wearing leather jackets? I'm not sure. Oh, well, the series is brilliant. It's the only NuWho series in which every episode is needed; every single one sets up something for the finale: Rose: Introduces our main players. The End of the World: Introduces the Time War. The Unquiet Dead: Introduces "Bad Wolf". The End of the World / WW3: Introduces Mickey and Jackie (fully). Dalek: Introduces Adam. No, I'm kidding, introduces the Daleks. The Long Game: Introduces Satelite Five. Father's Day: Introduces Pete's death and it's effect on Jackie. The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances: Introduces Captain Jack. Boom Town: Introduces "the heart of the TARDIS". Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways: Pays it ALL off! Brilliant! I understand why it's some people favourite, even though - through no fault of it's own - it can never be mine. Regarding Christmas Specials, my rule has always been that if it contains the exact same "TARDIS team" as the series preceding/succeeding it, then that's where it belongs. If not, to limbo it goes. So The Christmas Invasion is the launch of S2, for me. The Runaway Bride and Voyage of the Damned are in limbo, while things like A Christmas Carol, Last Christmas, and Twice Upon a Time are the Christmas bow on their respective series. I like Boom Town, but again, for those personal aesthetic reasons, I can't say it's a favourite. I get what you mean about the mundanity, but I prefer Moffat's conception that the Doctor can't have a day off, literally cannot, like he's more a symbol brought to life in a story than a real person. It's like how you never see Columbo on a day off. In some sense, Columbo isn't meant to be a real person. He's like a ghost, or an avatar, or a symbol, perpetually solving rich people's crimes for infinity, existing in his narrative mode forever. I think the Doctor is the same! I like that. More fairytale. We're all stories in the end... But, anyway, here's a quote from RTD from the S1 script-book which I think you'll appreciate: "We had tuppence for this episode. We'd just done World War Two and and we had the final battle of the Time War to come; money had to be saved somewhere. I looked back at the stock material - yes, there's Cardiff Bay outside my window, a location wanting and deserving to be used. Yes, there's a Slitheen costume, and a fully rendered CGI model of it in the files. Yes, there's a wonderful TARDIS crew, all under contract, and yes, there's Annette Badland. Who needs laser-beams, when her and Chris can act together? During rehearsals for Episodes IV & V, Chris had gone for a costume fitting and I'd stood-in for him; I had faced Margarete Slitheen and my God, she was terrifying. More than terrifying; she was real. Right there and then, I resolved to bring Annette back.
When I handed Boom Town in, Phil Collinson phoned me up:
" I thought you said this was cheap!"
"It is"
"There's an earthquake! In Cardiff!!"
This script is also paving the way for the big finale. Jack's now established as a fine member of the crew: a strategist and a fighter ready for the Daleks to come. I knew that the TARDIS would need a force-field in Episode XIII, so I laid down the extrapolator. And I wanted a Doctor who, for a brief time, was happy.
Out of all that comes an episode which is pure atmosphere and dialogue. It exists on a charm; "When the wind's in the right direction", says the Doctor, as though summoning a spell. And while I love spaceships and monsters and intergalactic wars, the simplicity of this episode makes it, just sometimes, when the wind's in the right direction, my favourite."

The new episodes of It's Always Sunny which were great. To be fair most of the time if someone asked me what was literally the last thing I watched it would be that show as I watch it constantly on repeat.
Last movie was the new Avatar which I was surprised by how much I liked. It's very basic and predictable and the characters feel tropey but it's easy to get lost in that world if you want to and visually it's a real treat. It also had the added bonus of not feeling at all like a Marvel film which most big budget films do nowdays and I'm just so utterly beyond sick of that tone by this point it was nice to watch an action/adventure film with a different feel. It felt old fashioned in a way despite the modern visuals which was nice, if it wasn't for how good it was visually you wouldn't know the film was made in a post-Marvel era. It wasn't amazing or anything, i wouldn't go telling people to watch it but I was expecting it to be rubbish but I was pleasantly surprised.

Any footy series that I should check out?
