I definitely rank "Comedown Machine" the Strokes 3rd best album after "Is This It" and their criminally underrated "Room On Fire". I dig tracks like Tap Out, Welcome To Japan, 50 50, 80s Comedown and Slow Animals. Anybody else feel like Julian is trying to sing like Brandon Flowers a little? The falsetto's on the song "Partners In Crime" have that feel.

I dunno about that, First Impressions of Earth was too much, but definitely had its moments (Red Light, You Only Live Once, Electricityscape), I don't think Comedown Machine ever gets quite as high, but realistically I haven't heard it enough to formulate an opinion. Dig up this thread in 3 months or so for accurate assessments (actually, I really wish we would do that with every album) compared to the others. Agree that Room on Fire is underrated, I actually like it better than Is This It.

My highlights from that album include: You Only Live Twice, Heart In A Cage, Razorblade and Ask Me Anything.

Listened to the previews/clips and I must say I'm 50/50 on it I love some of the songs (namely 50/50, Chances, One Way Trigger and Tap Out are good once you get used to the vibe they're going for) but some I just can't enjoy yet. I'd like to still listen properly. I did enjoy Angles but it took a while to really appreciate. Fist Impressions may be a few songs too long but there were some very good tracks on that album still. Could have been a very solid 11 track record.

Listened to the album about 4x's. Just not feeling it yet. Nowhere is good as Angles IMO. Dont understand the hate for that album. I think its their 3rd best album.

It's fucking dogshit, nearly as bad as the abortion that was Humbug. Go back and listen to some Lady Gaga. if you think Humbug was an abortion. A masterpiece of a record.

Room on Fire is a better record just. Meet me in the Bathroom (the guitar solo in that is epic), Under control (one of their greatest songs ever), Whatever happened, Reptilla and 12:51 are great great songs. I feel after that record they became very hit and miss (they release some great singles and the odd great album track).

Really been enjoying Angles and Comedown Machine over the last week, despite originally thinking they were both crap.
I'm one of the many who have wondered "Why can't they repeat the greatness of the first two albums!?" (a concept that will be familiar to the handful of Oasis fans here who actually have a fucking clue), but it's clear that the Strokes sound has evolved a long way since 2001 and they won't be going back to it.

If they could do an album with the peaks of Angles and Comedown Machine(they are both good but lack some tracks in between) I would be happy. But they are solid efforts, not the game changer that was Is this it, and I think that the band realized that and is staying to change as far as they can go, wich might bother some of the fans of their earlier work.

Some bands just don't have longevity on their side. After Room On Fire, I always felt the band was forcing themselves to continue on together. All the band members came from affluent backgrounds for the most part, had side bands, solo albums and outside interests. Being a Strokes member seemed like a chore for them between 2004-2011 with uneven albums being produced. In reality they probably should have been a two album band. One great the other very very good.

I'm just saying that Angles/Comedown Machine, when taken on their own terms, were pretty enjoyable.

A couple of fun tunes on this album like Tap Out, Partners In Crime and Happy Ending. There is a song on the new Deerhunter album called "T. H. M.". It sounds like a song the Strokes should have progressed to after Room On Fire.

After listening to this for a few weeks I can now say it's their weakest effort. Lacks even one brilliant song where all the rest of their albums have at least 2-3.

^^^Yep, Machu Pichu is class, Under Cover of Darkness is brilliant to. If they held out a year or so they could've made a brilliant album with a mix of 'Angles' and 'Comedown Machine'

The world was moving on without them. They needed to dive back in to say "hey! we are still around despite a 5 year break, multiple solos albums from 3-4 band members. If they held out it would have been 7 years.

Yeah I know what you mean but an extra year or so would've been worth it if the album they came back with was at least better than ''First Impressions''...

side note: my friend's friend's first kiss was with the drummer from the Strokes.....
also, I find it weird that Julian's credited with writing the songs, at least he used to be, and he doesn't appear to play instruments, at least not on stage....
love the first two Strokes albums, like a song here and there from then on.....and love what I've heard from Julian's solo album.
God bless.
