Valtari - Sigur Ros Truly beautiful, an amazing album. There are albums that come along only very so often that take your breath away. Similar to standing at the peak of a mountain, it overwhelms you with such sheer beauty and I think Valtari is one of those albums. Music to me has always been about the sound of emotions. It always takes me to an emotional place but rarely does it take me to a physical place, but Sigur Ros always does that. If you listen to their music, you close your eyes and you think of the most beautiful isolated landscapes you've ever been to in your life. I get a sense of loneliness from it - the music and the land - but not in a depressing way. The way I see it is this. Many of us feel like innocent folk in a cynical world driven by profit, greed and arrogance, all culminating in a loveless society - and so many of us simply aren't adapted to survive in such a competitive environment. But these barren, bleak, isolated but beautiful places are untouched by this world - so much so that it feels like a completlely different world. You're on your own, nobody to pressurise you, nobody to lie to you, nobody to hurt you. It's your world and your own personal space - it reflects you. You feel on your own all the time but you know you wouldn't want to be like the rest.... you wish society wasn't so vile. Of course, there's a lot of beauty in sadness, and Sigur Ros convey this brilliantly. Their music fits in with the Icelandic mountains - they just could not have come from another place in the world. Valtari gives me that sense of melancholy associated with the physical places I've mentioned. The only other album that has had the exact same effect on me is The Unforgettable Fire by U2 but that was released 28 years ago. I'm so pleased that a band today can still make such deep and affecting music.

My favorites were...
Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania Jake Bugg - Jake Bugg Dinosaur Jr - I Bet On Sky Melody's Echo Chamber - Melody's Echo Chamber Beach House - Bloom
Oh yeah and Palma Violets released a good single that was probably one of my favorites this year... Hoping for a good debut album from them in 2013. Just thought I'd mention that.

I've only listened to Valtari, haven't heard any of their albums yet, but Valtari gave me something new which I've never experienced with music before. I'm going to see them for the very first time in February next year and although I'm a bootlegger, I'm not going to listen to any of their bootlegs until then.

I've seen them 6 times, each one special and unique. When I first saw them in 2005, during the song Viðrar vel til loftárása, the band all came to a complete stop mid song. Paused for 45 seconds...dead silence in the venue, then the band came crashing right back in without missing a beat. It was insane. Definitely check out the albums ( ) and Takk...

I'm using this thread to discover new music - looking for consistencies in the lists.
Getting Beach House's Bloom now (just listened to Myth, it's brilliant), as well as Tame Impala's Lonerism.
Just found Alt-J yesterday, and their album is awesome, too.

Bloom by Beach House is an incredible album. I'm not disappointed at all. I'm going with it for my favorite of 2012, with Alt-J not terribly far behind.
Hypnotically stunning:

Think every Australian music publication has given album of the year to Lonerism by Tame Impala. Its deserved i guess. They never sold out to anyone and if anyone wants to hear the story about the band i can tell them or google it ahha. Had the pleasure of seeing them live at their hometown gig last saturday and was truly spectacular. Never seen so many people at the venue.Top band and great people

Why don't I like any new music or almost everything released the past 5 years? I'm 20 years old ffs and I feel like an out of touch old man! Not liked a single song or band in this thread, everything just sounds the same. Almost every band is full of boring hipster student types and all they sound the same, kinda like MGMT if you know what I mean. There's some exceptions obviously but I really do hate music at the moment! Someone please find me a decent new band not part of that scene please Some guitars would be nice!

Didn't even realize Stars had a new album (The North) out this year until now!
Hold On When You Get Love is a tune. Brilliant band.

Japandroids - Celebration Rock
The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
Both albums are pure, unapologetic rock'n'roll.

Top five in order
1.Japandroids - Celebration Rock 2. Beach House - Bloom 3. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange 4. Tame Impala - Lonerism 5. Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d. City
those are the five that I'll probably keep spinning on a regular basis. Each album is pretty complete in its own terms with Ocean and Lamar crafting superb stories, Japandroids providing a sweaty, adrenaline rock n roll and Beach House and Tame Impala getting lost in their own respective sounds. Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and Japandroids in my opinion are pumping some new life into their respective genres of R&B, Rap, and Punk Rock. 2012 didn't have as many superb records as 2011 did but a couple records really hit me and I'll be listening to them for a long time.
Other good records.
Alabama Shakes - Girls & Boys The Men - Open Your Heart Spiritualized – Sweet Heart Sweet Light DIIV – Oshin ScHoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions Cat Power – Sun Swearin’ – Swearin’ Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory Chromatics – Kill For Love Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel… Purity Ring – Shrines Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet On Sky Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Mature Themes

Anyone else think that this year was pretty average overall? I mean, lots of solid albums all over the place for indie music - but nothing that really seems as if it will ever be remembered as something truly special edit: I guess excluding Matt, you seem to have some sort of opinion on Sigur Ros' one .
