Gordon Smart did totally turn it into "the enemy are the saviours of the universe"
he does make some very good points here, good read indeed

I loved The Enemy's first album and saw them live 3 times. They're a good band, still somehow underrated and that's a shame.

Mainstream music tends to be cyclical the kind of music that he likes will have it's moment in the sun again. But the guitar is far from dead it's used by more than indie rock bands. As for the enemy they are poor live and average on record.

It's nice of them to offer a support slot, but they're really part of the problem for the most part. They make un-inspired, shit guitar music, just like other has-beens like the Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight. That's almost as bad as making manufactured pop music; both types of artists have an inflated sense of importance. Unless their new album is something special, or at least decent, it's time to pack it in and give the press to some other band.
And, as piss-my-self excited I am for the The Stone Roses reunion, that isn't the answer to any of the chart's problems.

Good comments from Tom.
Hope The Enemy's 3rd album is good as I think that will determine their future as a band.

I'd even argue that their second album has it's moments, but that doesn't change the fact that, at the moment, they're one of the many bands that sprung up around 2004 and have been treading water for quite a while.

Razorlights' second album was great. I loved it and I've seen them twice in 2006 and 2007. I even met them after their Paradiso gig in 2006. They were very friendly and nice (even Johnny Borrel). I think they reached the top around that time, but shortly after just went down hil.

Dont mind the enemy, had the first album , thought live and die in these towns was a great single too. I agree with his sentiments too in his 'rant'.

I like the Enemy, theyre music reflects who they are, honest, straight up working class lads.
Their first album is really good, 2nd is a bit of a let down, saw them live loads of times and considering they looked like spotty little kids on stage theyre fuckin ballsy live.
And I agree with Tom on these views too

The Enemy are good when they portray their own identity. Too often they try to sound like The Jam, and have ripped directly off of The Clash and Pulp, too.
I like them, but they are distinctively average. A better man's Kaiser Chiefs (but at least the Enemy are indeed better).

When have The Enemy ever portrayed their own identity?
I like some of their stuff but they have never made anything nearing original.

When have The Enemy ever portrayed their own identity? I like some of their stuff but they have never made anything nearing original. While they may have never made anything original, they do a few tunes that aren't directly ripping off of the likes of The Jam. I know when we talk about this subject, it's a bit touchy considering Oasis ripped off many bands, but they did so in a way to produce something that became their own. The Enemy, however, are doing the former and lacking the latter - which makes them sound very forced and even contrite, at times. The title track from We Live And Die, is a prime example. It's just The Jam lite.

For anyone interested in the enemy they are streaming their home gig tonight. Be a good way to see what the new tunes are sounding like. Seen the boys 3 times and looking forward to hearing the new stuff. "Alright everyone... the new website is live at www.theenemy.com. You can tune in there at 9pm to watch the whole live show streamed tonight from S7ven in Coventry. Who's watching? Who's coming? Get on it!"

The Kaiser Chiefs first album is probably in my top 5 favourite albums of the decade, it's much better than the Enemies (although I do like that as well).

though I respect the enemy for what they are and what they are trying to do......I just dont find them that original or inspiring. and as for being the saviours of british guitar music......give me a fucking break... either I am part of a minority that refuses to admit they are anything but average or the standard of british guitar music really has sunk to a depressing low that people actually think this is acceptable.......

You are part of the majority; I'm sure more people think they're shit than those who think they are even decent.

Sounds like bland post-oasis wannabe stuff to my ears. Like all great bands (Oasis) they spur off some great ones and countless imitators. Sure, it'd be nice to have some real guitar music back in the top 40 but one of the reasons why the genre is struggling is that the rock bands in the mainstream and arguably in the indie world to some degree, haven't stepped up their game and created something special. Instead they are settling for mediocrity but I'd say they might not have the talent in the first place. Just my honest opinion, not trying to hate on anyone who like The Enemy.

I've tried to like them and some of their songs are alright but let's face it; The Enemy are uninspired wank.

I've listened to plenty of albums that could be considered special. It's just the capacity for these special albums to break into the mainstream is so minuscule. Why should record labels spend loads of money to help bands grow and expand when they could spend their money on a sure-fire, hit maker? The notion that the quality of modern music is somehow lesser than previous decades is a farce.
