Who would be your Top 10 guitarist of all-time?
Mine's:
1.) Jimi Hendrix (just barely though. He's not the far and away the best) 2.) Eric Clapton (again, just barely) 3.) B.B. King 4.) John Lee Hooker 5.) Duane Allman 6.) Les Paul 7.) Jeff Beck 8.) Jimmy Page 9.) Stevie Ray Vaughan 10.) Ron Asheton
The Top 3 are pretty bunched. I literally would not seperate Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King by more than .1% each. Either one could be #1 in my opinion. The only surprise in mine's might be Ron Asheton. But I do love his work with the Iggy & The Stooges. He really was brilliant. And I've known people who aren't willing to put John Lee Hooker even in the Top 10, much less the Top 5. But Boogie Chillen alone puts him there for me.
Edit: The list does not have to soley contain lead. Rhythm guitarists are accepted too.

10)Marcus Siepen (Blind Guardian) 9)Andre Olbrich (Blind Guardian, hologram (running fan joke!)) 8) Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth, Demons And Wizards) 7) Brett Garsed (Planet X, John Farnham, Nelson, solo) 6) Steve Hackett (Genesis, GTR, Quiet ones, solo) 5) Lord Tim (LORD, Dungeon) 4) Jimi Hendrix 3) Brian May 2) Mike Kennally (Mullmuzzler, Beer for Dolphins, solo) 1) Steve Howe (Yes, GTR)
Wasn't sure if you meant just lead, I threw in Marcus because I was one short if it was just lead (he's a rythm man)

JOHNNY GUITAR MARR Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) Jack White Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) Nels Cline (Wilco) Britt Daniel (Spoon) John Squire Nick Drake Mick Taylor/Keith Richards Tom Verlaine/Richard Lloyd (Television)
I can't help but put pairings of guitarists. All of them are brilliant on their own, but those duos are what legends are made of!

There's only one greatest, coolest guitarist on the earth for me. I agree 100%, definitely Noel Gallagher Seriously though it doesn't matter that he doesn't play fast, he is (to paraphrase the Clash) my guitar hero. For sheer catchiness, I'd put his lead lines and solos up against anybody else in rock. ..And Hendrix, obviously.

why hendrix? i mean he was definitely a good guitarist, but i think his talent is a bit overestimated because of his early death

For the sake of throwing another name out for consideration, Slash and his sound made GNR what they were. He had to, because a ten minute epic song can't just linger without some phenomenal guitar work.

He was great guitarist who had a nice ear for great hooks, fills, and melodies, but he wasn't earth shattering. The Top 10 placing he has on the RS list is mostly because he was a Beatle.

why hendrix? i mean he was definitely a good guitarist, but i think his talent is a bit overestimated because of his early death It is hard to overrate Hendrix's guitar prowess. He truly was amazing. I think the problem with Hendrix is that he has very much been deified in his death to literally being a god. When the fact of the matter is that even in his time there were guitarists who could play just well as in him in certain areas, such as Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. But he's #1 in my opinion just for Are You Experienced. It's hard to listen to that album and not say he's not at least in the Top 2 guitarists of all-time. His attack, his ability to modify chords and make them his own, and his knowledge of modal concepts puts him up there. Like I said, I think the problem with Hendrix is that many have deified him. Much like Nirvana to a certain extent. He was NOT the end all be all and he was NOT the perfect guitarist. But just as with Nirvana, to deny that he was an amazing guitarist I think is ignoring facts. Having said that, I do really think the Top 3: Hendrix, Clapton, King are not seperated by that much. It's literally the smallest of margins.

Right...how does one go about in this post-Greek Mythology world in, ya know, "literally being a god"?...Shit, maybe I just need to go back and read The Iliad again but, ya know, take it literal this time, don't I?

Johnny Marr every minute of every day.
Seriously I couldn't care less if Jimi Hendrix could play with his feet, the fact is that his guitar playing does nothing for me. All self indulgent guitar fret wankery from the likes of Page and Hendrix etc. I'm not doubting they can play the guitar exceptionally well, it's just that I don't think they play it the right way.
Now with Marr, we have a guy a who is a better composer than the likes of Hendrix, and his melodic chiming sound turns the guitar into a thing of beauty. He complements the sound of the whole band rather than going off in a tangent with self indulgent solos. The really best guitarists I think know how to blend it perfectly with the rest of the band while still maintaining the main focus of the song on the singer rather than stepping out to the centre stage and showing off. Look no further than Johnny Marr I say.
Of course, it's all just opinion but I think on the bigger picture, Johnny Marr has it all and he is my favourite guitarist by a country mile.

"How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world? I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher." —Jimi Hendrix quote from Rolling Stone magazine interview. ^^ Great shout for Page (big Zep fan here )

I dunno... But Matt Bellamy is one of the ones up there for me that hasn't been mentioned...
I'm a bit shocked that nobody has mentioned Santana yet, either!!!! I'd also chuck in Pete Townshend, purely for the performance of My Generation on the Live At Leeds album!
