I presume you mean the Hatful of Hollow version of Back To The Old House mimmi? Personally, I think that is the best use of a guitar ever, achingly beautiful. And I think Some Girls guitar melody is amazing also. I love the guitars on The Queen Is Dead and How Soon Is Now also.

"Hatful of Hollow" is my most favourite The Smiths album together with The Queen Is Dead. Songs they've done for the BBC session and Peel session are fantastic. One more to add: Will I Wonder and loel, good luck!

I've always found the guitar work by Marr on Bigmouth Strikes Again to be one of my favorites. Especially in the final minute ten. His guitar perfectly underpins that song and keeps it from spinning out of control. Marr quite literally a master at working with a song, rather than against or outside of it.

How does one work said guitar outside of a song?...Go on. It's when you're adding superfluous riffs/fills/solos, just for self indulgent reasons. Most would say that even as a lead player, you're suppose to work within the flow or the confines of the song. Some guitarists have a tendency to work against the flow of the song and put a solo where there should be none or fill where there should be none. That's basically working against or outside of a song. You find that kind of stuff in a lot hair metal I find.

John Squire Johnny Marr Nick McCabe Agree very much with the last 3 here ;D I'd add Steve Cradock, Will Sergeant from Echo and the Bunnymen and a guy called Graham Day (check out his bands the Graham Day and the Gaolers, The Prisoners and The Solarflares) to this list. Worth pointing out that although I play the guitar I'm pretty clueless about the technical side of things, I just know I like the sound of the above guitarists

Yes, I get that, BUT How does one play guitar outside of a song if indeed guitar sounds were within that said song, no matter how uncomplementary and/or contrasting it seems??

Slash and his sound made GNR what they were. So you're saying he's shit?

Well, The G-Man - Rory Gallagher was one of Marr's faves, he waxes lyrical about him in the excellent Ghost Blues DVD:
More evidence of the G-Man for the unannitiated:

Peter Hayes from BRMC is extremely under-rated for his fx work. His acoustic material is gorgeous too.
NME once described his live performance as the sound of planets colliding.
He seems to have become slightly less creative live over the last few years, but BRMC live between 2002-2006 was some of the best rock 'n' roll I've ever heard.
In 2004 (?), at the end of TTOOYO, I watched him play with a *broken hand* and he STILL ripped it up lol.
