Now before you have a pop...hear me out.
Noel Gallagher is an outstanding songwriter...probably my favourite of all time, and I think this album will be brilliant.
BUT......
....what is one of the qualities that every good songwriter/song has?
....I'd like to say...
...the ability to craft proper songs that become part of the social fabric.
Now Noel has done this with Wonderwall, DLBIA, Live Forever, Cigs and Alcohol.
When was his last song of such a standard?
Probably Stop Crying Your Heart Out me thinks...
He has become more self indulgent i think...
I'm just rambling here...but from the songs I've heard so far...(which are TOP) I'm still waiting for him to a do Paul McCartney and write seriously epic solo-career songs that the public love...
Mull Of Kintyre Band On The Run...etc
I think this is the challenge for Noel...

How about waiting until you've heard the album?

If he wrote a 'Mull Of Kintyre' equivalent, I'd disown him

The Importance of Being Idle? Let There Be Love? Falling Down?
They are all classics that we released after 2002 which is when you say he last wrote a "classic" (nonsense IMO)
Stop the Clocks? Record Machine? If I Had a Gun?
The songs we've heard off his solo record are some of the best he's ever done. This album will be a classic in the same vane as Definitely Maybe in my honest and humble opinion. I think it will be an instant classic.
It's the best record featuring Noel Gallagher since Morning Glory IMO, and I'm simply going on the demo's I've heard and the 30 seconds snippets I heard today. It simply is phenomenal which is why there is so much anticipation for it to be leaked early.

You can be a good (even great) songwriter without writing a single thing that "becomes a part of the social fabric".

OP is right though, SCYHO is the last Oasis song that most people know. (I should do a survey here in Germany, ask 100 people on the street about Oasis songs - should be interesting!)

The Importance of Being Idle is one of Oasis' most well known songs in England.

Sometimes I feel great shame in sharing a forum and AV with you. Keep on rowing, son.

That was not the point of the OP. He clearly stated that he loves all the new songs. But he also mentioned, that those songs - and all the other hits released since maybe DLBIA - didn't have the mass appeal. Just stating this is not a sacrilege, is it? And nevertheless, one might love Fallin Down et al and still think that those songs are no hits for the masses. So what?

To continue on...SCYHO was the last GREAT masses classic from Noel... England crashing out of the World Cup when it was out...it has become nearly the "go to" song for the UK culture when failure comes in sport...the reverse to Wonderwall for when a momentus sporting triumph occurs

England getting kicked out of the World Cup is hardly Waterloo is it? You are a complete bored-out-of-his-ass dunce.

Sometimes it's all timing. SCYHO wouldn't have been what it is without the Cup defeat. Same with DM and the time it was released...timing is everything... For instance, if If I Had A Gun was released around the time of Kate And Will's Wedding......

I just love how these rose-colored idiots are talking like "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" is the socio or pop-culturio peers to "Blowin' In the Wind" or "Smells like Teen Spirit".

When was the last time Paul McCartney wrote a song that was part of the social fabric? But he has...in his solo career...and that's the point...will Noel ever achieve this again with his new set up (even if he writes for another 30 years?)
