I certainly wouldn't consider 1 million worldwide as "low' standards. I also believe that it would be a great victory for him if he could sell over a million copies worldwide. DOYS sold around 1.5 million around the world, so yeah 1 million would be a big thing for Noel. It's not low expectations for him to sell a million, it's actually just right. If you take in account his fanbase, where he is in his career, and the state of the music business in general. So yeah, if he came even close without the Oasis name to what DOYS sold with the Oasis name, then that would be a huge success for him. never said him selling 1 million copies would be a disappointment. I just wouldn't consider it a great milestone or anything like that. If those are your expectations and he meets them, great. That's what he was supposed to do, thoretically speaking. If he doesn't, it's obviously a disappointment(we're talking sales-wise only) and if he exceeds them, then we can praise him for doing something that wasn't in the plans. That's just how i think. Maybe i have higher standards. Why are you even bringing up DOYS when we all know that that album commercially was a step backwards from DBTT ? 1.5 million copies WORLDWIDE... for an Oasis album? sorry but that's a fucking embarrassment if you ask me. Like i said, low standards.... some people have them, i do not.

And technically if you take in account the decline in music sales and compare them to 2005 vs. 2008, then the numbers are off. I don't think DBTT has sold more than a little over 2 million world wide. Wikipedia has it at 7 million, but those are just Oasis fans changing it.

i hear you but... 1 million units? im not buying it. For the "mastermind" behind the band that sold around 60 millions albums? for one of the best songwriters of our generation? for the chief? the genius that he is?
no, a million is a success for someone with no fanbase, new to the scene putting out their debut album. But one-day-to-be "Sir Noel Gallagher" ? no no no... like Noel himself would say, i'm not having any of that.

1 million sold in wich time because the album could sell it in 5 years i would call that a dissapoinment but if it sells it on less than 6 months could be a lot different gear(but still speeding)?.

The drop of record sales from record to record since post 2000 has been appalling. It took DBTT years to sell just over 2 million copies, it took years for DOYS to get it's 1.5 million. Shit I could go back to HC which also sold just about 2.5 million copies. I just don't see how anyone could say that he'll sell more than a million, when Oasis could barely pull in 1.5 million. Especially because even Oasis' record sales were declining album by album. As a matter of fact, I don't think Oasis ever had an album that sold over 3 million copies world wide in the 2000's. They hovered around 2 million. I'm pretty Deasy55 could answer it better than me, but I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that Oasis did not have an album which sold over 3 million copies after 2000. That tells you all you need to know about what expectations you should have for Noel.

so in other words, you're telling me to just lower my expectations? no more "this album is gonna be massive" type of bullshit then? got it. It all depends on what your definition of massive is. Is it massive for the kind of artist that Noel is now? or do you mean, massive as in for any "big" time artist? If you thought massive as for any "big" artist, then that was pretty foolish on your part. And anyone else who has said that with that definition in mind is being pretty foolish. Either way, I don't see what drove you or anyone else to that conclusion, or that definition of "massive". If Noel sells 1 million, then it should be considered a success imo. Either way, let's just enjoy the music.

I don't care what anyone says...Noel selling 1 million copies or slightly more of this album would be a huge success for him. Anyone that doesn't think that has over inflated Noel's current importance in the music scene.
I would actually consider 750k mission successful, unless he has a really unexpected hit.

BDI didn't sell 500k yet. And I agree that 500k for Noel would be the minimum we should expect. But saying that Noel will sell double what Beady Eye sold is bullshit? Sounds perfectly plausable to me.

I've found a few sources which seem to contradict each other...

I guess we just have different definitions of commercial success. For some artists a success is selling 5 million, for others 100,000 would be a huge success. I don't think anybody in their right mind expected Beady Eye to sell a million copies, simply because the chances were 0.000001%.

If it gets good reviews and goes to number one in the uk it will be considered a success. No rock bands sell many albums these days. Radiohead only got to number 7.

That tells you all you need to know about what expectations you should have for Noel. I would think that HC or DBTT would have been very close to the 3 million mark. It's true that certifications will tell us that it's more likely to be around 2 million, but gold and platinum awards don't seem to be the be all and end all when you look at the top seeling albums in history. I mean, for instance, Thriller, which has supposedly sold 110 million copies, does not have certifications that stack up to anywhere near that amount. Either does Back In Black, Dark Side of the Moon, What's the Story? the list goes on. It's just that since I remember reading in a Records Stastistics Encyclopedia (or something of the sort) that DM had sold 8 million and that BHN had sold 7 million, it would seem likely that at least ONE post 2000s album could have sold at least 3 million, which is less than half of those two. And what's with Argentina/Brazil? Oasis clearly has a huge fan base there but you never see any sales data/certifications coming from there. Stranger than fiction...

If Liam or Noel Gallagher release an album and it doesn't even sell a million copies... sorry, but that's a disappointment. DGSS was a commercial disappointment imo and unless Noel's album sells a million units, it'll also be considered a disappointment.

Wow I'm shocked to see that the two musicians I value the most have such shitty recent record sales. I can account for dbtt being rubbish because it didn't have a single hit on it. It was just nice sounding tunes really, nothing that took you back to 94-01 sing-a-alongs.
DOYS whilst a much much better album in my opinion, just didn't really have a hit track either...TSOTL had potential but a lack of a chorus killed it flat. The boys just didn't really bring it. And I think this HFB album will be different because it will have genuine sing-a-longs on it and i also reckon tracks will be used for movies and potentially FIFA 12.
That'll help it crack 3-4 mil plus. I'm personally buying like 5 copies and giving an album to some of my mates to get them into it. Small price to pay for the way Noel makes us feel. Fucking splendid.

in the end it depends on which album attracht the masses. and i don't think that BDIs album is one for the big public. so i don't think the sales are disappointing.
noels new songs are more friendly for the kids today, so there is a chance that this album could be number one and a good seller
