Looking at Noel's album tracklisting, i was disappointed to see Record Machine on there, not because it's a bad song, in fact i think it has the potential to be one of Noel's best post BHN songs, but because i think it was the sort of song Oasis were crying out for after 2002. And i know there are different stories as to why it never appeared on DOYS but rather than talk about those i just wanted to look at why they needed it in the later years.
HC is slated on here, but if you face the facts, Little By Little and Stop Crying Your Heart Out are probably the only 2 songs post 2000 songs that could have the Oasis crowds singing along to arm in arm like any of the 90s hits.
It was quite embarassing going to the DOYS tour and seeing people go for a piss or to the bar when any DBTT or DOYS song came on.
And although DBTT and DOYS were imo, great albums, they just really lacked anthemic songs like Record Machine and even The Roller. Noel said in an interview earlier this year that people "stopped listening to Oasis" and i think that is exactly the reason why.

he said the crtics stoped listening not the fans I thought the quote was "Oasis? people had stopped listening". Sounds quite general

the Roller simply isn't that good and there's a reason it never appeared on an Oasis album.
think about it.

Record Machine isn't that good. The verses and lyrics are poor, at least on the leaked version. I can't see how its better than any of the singles Oasis released post 2000.

The Roller is a pleasant song but its 'shelf life' (for me as a listener) has been limited. I feel it is particularly uninspired live and bears little resemblance to the 'big anthemic' Oasis moments. The true anthem period for Oasis probably ended when Noel ditched cocaine; he never wrote those soaring guitar solos again, nor had them produced in the "brickwall" fashion. Heathen Chemistry IMO was an attempt to rectify dwindling sales by returning to what Noel thought Oasis should sound like. Moreover, he was having to cede to the others as contributing songwriters to the post 2000 Oasis so whatever the circumstances with Record Machine, maybe balancing the contributions simply meant the trach didn't make it to an album? Plus the song didn't fit what became 'the mood' for Dig Out Your Soul.
I'm hoping there will be more breadth to the High Flying Birds tracks; familiar moments but with a broader palette of influences. Let's hope the record will be different but familiar all at once. At the risk of being disappointed, early indications would point to this being so... People underestimate Noel as a songwriter at their peril. This record may silence a few critics; with both Gallaghers frequently, if wrongly, frowned upon as musical philistines, it certainly needs to.
Beady Eye have come and gone and done more or less what you would expect from Liam, Andy, Gem and Chris- produce a solid, if unexceptional collection of well realised tracks that throw up no surprises. Pleasant and inoffensive- yes. Tracks of great relevance, longevity and interest to the wider public- no. They very much seem like they go through the motions, not just on stage but in interviews as well. There is a vibe about Noel's record that suggests it might go the extra mile. He's hardly likely to return to the ubiquitous figure of fame and success that he was in 1996 but I have a feeling some of these new songs will really make people stop and listen...

^ Great response, absolutely spot on. I think Noel might surprise a few of the more ignorant music critics who still think he's the same songwriter (and person) he was in the 90's.
As for Record Machine, it would've of been great on DBTT in my opinion, not so much DOYS though. DBTT was a great album but it probably needed another killer track to elevate it to a classic. I reckon RM would've slotted in nicely, perhaps instead of The Meaning of Soul or one of the other album fillers.

sure it would have been on no.1. back in the day most of the oasis singles went to number one or at least in the top 5

The Roller would not have sounded out of place on Heathen Chemistry or Don't Believe The Truth. It is certainly a better track than A Quick Peep, Probably All In The Mind, Better Man and Keep The Dream Alive. I Think having Eyeball Tickler on DBTT would have added to its depth with another belter.

I think it is on of the songs on DGSS that you can tell that they built the music around the vocal. Done the old way like Oasis, I don't think Liam or the song would have been as good.
Liam always insisted on putting his vocals down last with Oasis. It had been mentioned a few times over the years that it had been suggested that Liam put down his vocals earlier in the sessions but that was always shot down by Liam. He even said that he'd been a bit resistant to doing it with BDI but that it turned out to have made his job easier so he was happy he'd done it.
As for RM. Chances are that Liam would have struggled with it live. He woul have continued with his same behavior and his vocals probably would have stayed bad. He'd continue biting off phrases that and shoring instead of singing.
The Liam of BDI is much different prospect than what the Liam of Oasis would have been like circa album 8

Record Machine would be epic, and I truly do mean epic, if it was treated in the same way Acquiesce was - with Liam and Noel switching vocal responsibilities:
"I want to live in a dream" - Liam "I want to live in a dream" - Noel "In my record machine" - Liam "In my record machine" - Noel
Sure, the lyrics are weak in places, but this had the chance to be a truly wonderful Oasis epic. I know we'll get a slightly improved final version in 2 months, but I still wish it was the proper guitar laden lengthy epic that Noel once described.

the Roller simply isn't that good and there's a reason it never appeared on an Oasis album. think about it. And I think another reason TR didn't make it onto an Oasis, was because Noel really did think it could be better. When people were stating why they thought TR should have been released by Oasis, they kept stating that TR was better than the worst songs on DOYS. But I think the point that people were missing was that Noel didn't want TR to better than the worst stuff on a particular album. He wanted TR to be one of the best tracks on an album. When Noel was talking about hearing most of the stuff on DGSS he made a point of saying that he thought that TR would/could have been a big song for Oasis, but they never could get it there. I think the reason that TR didn't make it onto an Oasis album was because Noel didn't just feel that TR could be better, but that it could be great. That it would make no sense to put as just an album track ON any album, when it clearly could be better, and if made better, be mega. So when people say that TR is better than TNOR, AGN, or HHL, I don't think the intent was for TR to just be better than those songs, but rather for it to be just as good if not better than say TT or BIU (which I don't think it is). Noel wanted to make TR into a monster hit, not just a pretty good song. And I think TR would have stayed hidden if it didn't make it to point where Noel thought it had the potential to be. Beady Eye released it because it was closes thing they had to an actual single other FLW. So they clearly couldn't afford to keep developing it until it became what Noel felt it could have become. The Roller was released by necessity. If Oasis had stayed together, we probably would have never heard TR. At least not until it developed into what it had the potential to become. And that's what I find kind of sad, because wasted (not saying that TR is a complete waste) potential is the worst thing to see/hear. So it would have been nice if Oasis would have stayed together, or if Beady Eye would have had more of an opportunity to develop it into the song that it could have been.

I disagree with those 2 songs being the only "crowd pleasers" since 2000. As mentioned earlier Lyla definitely did that. I'd mention im outta time and boadc. Sure, its hard to beat the songs from before 2000, and i dont think these do. I think it needs to be said, that oasis' original fans, had the first 2, maybe 3 albums in that age when you really take to things, and that almost nothing can compare to that, they grew older, but the songs mean something. Of course you get a little more excited when hearing THAT song that means something specific to you. You shouldn't be embarrassed about people going for a piss. If you drink 4 beers during a show, chances are that you will need to go. When would you go? During dlbia or falling down?

And although DBTT and DOYS were imo, great albums, they just really lacked anthemic songs like Record Machine and even The Roller. By 2005 ownards Noel dind't want to write athemic songs anymore, DBTT had only a few and DOYS had only one. RM, at least the demo, is Oasis by numbers and The Roller is ripoffthebeatlesorjohnlennonoasisbynumbers.

The unfortunate thing though is that it seems as if Liam was doing less and less vocal on the demos as time went on.

The unfortunate thing though is that it seems as if Liam was doing less and less vocal on the demos as time went on. I know. Liam appeared less and less on b-sides and that always bothered me. That is probably why the proposed second b-sides album never got off the ground in 2006 because when you start to compile the b-sides it would sound like a Noel solo album effort. I also believe a Record Machine demo with Liam does exist. They recorded it for two different album sessions (DBTT and DOYS). It exists. Especially since Liam keeps telling the press he wants to see if Noel sings STC and Record Machine as good as he did on the demos. I will keep the faith that one day in the future we will hear it via anthology or leak.
