Got invited to Noel's listening party here in NYC last night. The new stuff sounds amazing! Dave Massey said this was the first public airing of the tracks. And The Chief was there, too boot. Small crowd so he was totally approachable and I got to chat with him for quite a while. It was a real thrill as I'm also a 44-year-old songwriter who's band of 15 years is winding down and is making a solo album and he took a real interest in that (I have 2 ex-Wings members, 2 ex-Plastic Ono members and an ex-Byrd on the disc). I'm interviewing him in a few weeks as well as Dave Sardy so I'll keep everyone updated. I've attached the invite. Sorry I didn't post it before the event, but I'm sure you all understand. Here's my story: www.examiner.com/rock-culture-in-new-york/hurricane-gallagher-hits-new-york-cityAttachments:

Awesome! From first listen, what's the best track, in your opinion?

Someone on twitter mentioned they had been to the listening party. I asked what she thought of the tunes. She said she LOVED them. Capital letters. Another endorsement. No idea who she is though. Could work for a label.

Do you have anything to add to the descriptions by the Music Radar guy? Oh...and feel free to express any criticisms... All the hyperbolic praise is freaking me out. I'm an Oasis fan. I'm not used to unrelenting critical praise. Even BDI had the backhanded complements about it being way better than the reviewer had anticipated without the songwriting of Noel or sly digs about being derivative to a greater or lesser extent. But you saying it could be the album of the year and the music radar guy saying that it lives up to the anticipation that Oasis fans have had for an Noel solo album for 2 decades...it's seriously playing with my mind!

I can see why the management didn't want Noel just releasing the AA album. Because they HAD to release this. It sounds so good. And we know it will sound good because we heard the strings and choir on EOTR. They are incredible. The way people talk about the High Flying Birds album ...
I have that giddy feeling I haven't had since SOTSOG (which was a let down - I like it but my anticipation was through the roof at the time).

some twitter stuff: 100bands100days: "headed to a Noel Gallagher listening party tonight, and Mr. Oasis himself should be there. To get drunk and tell him he's a wanker? Or not?" 25 aug after listening "Noel Gallagher. Really nice guy. New record sounds good. 16 hours ago" Pacorazzi (MTV Producer): "Noel's album seemed quite good. I need to listen to it again...sober." he upload a photo desmond.yfrog.com/Himg736/scaled.php?tn=0&server=736&filename=ooalo.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=640

Noel is doing an interview with AOL Music too... Did they say when it would come out? I hope he does one of those AOL Sessions! Those are amazing to watch! I don't think Oasis ever did any.

Wow! Okay, guys. I don't know where to even begin. Writing about music is like talking about fucking, as John Lennon once said. So I don't think I can be specific on a track-by-track basis (is that what you guys are asking?). But here goes... The sound is huge. The production is really clean and Noel's voice sounds better than it ever has. Truly. That is what jumped out. Hats off to Dave Sardy on that. He got great performances out of Noel but also sat them in the mix perfectly. Noel's delivery is confident and also doesn't rely on the IOBI falsetto-to-a-belt that he's been using a lot lately. The instrumentation is clever but not too offbeat either. Let's just say adventurous. The songs sound new but familiar and classic at the same time. There are hints of Oasis, of course, but not too much. I really felt like this sounded like a new chapter. But what especially struck me was the songs. Put it this way... I've tried and tried and TRIED to get into Beady Eye and I LIKE a few of the songs and Liam sounds great, but after losing interest in the album pretty quickly I expected them to win me over live. They didn't. And there's no great guitar playing on what is basically a guitar album. Andy Bell? Please. He's so twee and tentative on guitar. And having seen Gem with Oasis, Weller and Noel and now BDI I've come to realize he's a great SECOND guitarist. Well, there's none of that here. We take it for granted, but as Pete Townshend once told me "Noel's a fucking great guitar player." This stuff is confident. But even more than that it came back to the songs. The weakest songs were better than anything BDI has done to date. I wasn't surprised by that, but I was surprised by the fact that the delivery was SO STRONG (without being over the top or seemingly trying too hard). I dunno. Does that help? I kinda went out on a limb, and I don't mean to offend any BDI fans here. But Noel's stuff really put it them shame. But even setting aside the comparisons -- and having only heard the stuff once (can you believe they only played it for us once!?!) -- this is a great album. You will be pulling this one out for years. Well, I will. Okay, begin the darts!

Oh yeah. PS. (I Wanna Live In A Dream In My) Record Machine sounded amazing. Not very far off from the version most of you probably have, but much more powerful for the final touches. And if I had a gun goes to radio next week, according to Dave Massey (who worked with Oasis since '94 while at Sony and is now at Mercury).

Can you remember enough to give scores out of 10? Not that your musical tastes coincides with everyone else and we'll all take it with a grain of salt.
I'll stick up to you to the end for your opinions. I'm glad to hear them. Anyone that picks on you is a troll or a moron. Any news is better than nothing.
If you can't remember enough to grade them at least what was your favorite and least favorite songs?
Could you really get the sense of a story being told like Noel has proposed? Or was that all retrospective claptrap pretention?
Also...spot on about the guitars on BDI...I've made that point myself. I really did expect more from the guitarists. Particularly since everyone was going on and on about how much better Andy was as a guitarist than Noel. Liam and Chris stole the show instrumentally.
PS...I am still waiting for some criticism...

Okay, hang on. People say Andy is a better guitarist than Noel? That's just crazy talk. Okay, I didn't love If I Had a Gun but it's a more obvious choice to go to radio. More rock. More Oasis. I suppose on first listen I'd say the "dance" track was my least fav. I remember thinking, "Oooo, I might be skipping that one." Lol. But I dunno. Noel's tunes have a way of embedding themselves in your brain and all of a sudden you find yourself walking down the street humming Shout It Out Loud. So maybe that one would be a 7. The rest were all 8's and 9's and 10's. Except Record Machine, which was a fucking 11! Lol. But you have to remember, I was totally psyched to be able to go to this and was told right at the beginning I was gonna get to spend some time with The Chief. So I was pretty gassed. I spent the night talking to Ed Rogers and the drummer from Gaslight Anthem, totally buzzing. So while it could have totally been a let down I might not be the best critic. Also, they played it ONCE and I didn't take notes or anything. Sorry for that. But I just tried to ENJOY it.

Thanks Jeff!!!! One question, can you confirm there's not a guitar solo in Record Machine?? There is a solo. It may have been the first one I noticed though! Almost identical to the one on the version we all have, btw. But punchier (could be the mix). Starts strong and peters out at the end.
