What a stupid thread. Who gives a shit. Yea, cause discussing a major motif that has spanned the two decade catalogue of Noel Gallagher's lyrics on a Noel Gallagher discussion forum... stupid! What's next, a thread about guitar solos? One about singing? These threads don't belong in music forums!

Jesus, a lot of Christians seem to get a bad rap. I'm Christian. I have no problem with Noel's lyrics or any other way of thinking of life. The world needs to both learn and respect people on different views and even though I'm Christian by no means have I figured it all out or anywhere near to being a perfect soul.
God Bless. Do you not see what's insulting about this last sentence? The religious mind is paternalistic and warped. If that's what you believe then alright. I'm not going to turn this into a religious debate.

I was baptised as a child, my dad's a minister but I don't go to church and I don't consider myself that religious - my mind has certainly not being warped in anyway. I'm certainly no atheist but the narrow mindedness of some atheists is as bad as those religious fundamentalists. They hate the idea of some ancient scriptures telling them what's right and what's wrong, yet go around doing the same thing to everyone else.

Interesting thread. I'm an observant Jew and honestly a couple of Noel's lyrics left me a little uncomfortable at first, but I accept that these are his thoughts and he's not trying to force his viewpoint on anyone else with his songs. His personal religious/spiritual beliefs have aren't my business, so why should they bother me? And no, it doesn't make me love him or his music any less

"Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try. No hell below us. Above us only sky."
"Imagine there's no country. It isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for. And no religion, too."

Well I consider myself to be religious, I don't act like it all the time but I believe in God and Ive never been offended by some of the things Noel says because I don't give a fuck about what other people think

The last thing anyone should be "offended" over is Noel Gallagher lyrics. Not only are they relatively neutral purely in language, but as we all know, generally his lyrics are meaningless, or as someone stated above, used purely to complement the song itself.
But let's imagine for a moment that Noel was obviously anti-religion in his lyrics, why would someone be upset about it? Why would someone with a different opinion be upsetting to you? You disagree, you move on. Religion is not a topic that should be sheltered and exempt from discussion on sacred grounds. If, of course, it was very slanderous and insulting stuff, then ya, sure, be upset, but I think we can all agree this is not the case here.

Well I don't believe in God and am not religious in any sense. I'll leave it at that.

I believe in God too. It's hard not to look at everything around you with all it's complexity and realize that somebody or something brought it to life. You can say it's the big bang or that it was all there in the first place but I believe differently. I just can't stand people attacking my beliefs when I'm not forcing them on anyone but myself. Anyway, looking at Noels lyrics I see a man who struggles with the concepts of God. I think he wants to believe in a God but he doesn't want to be labeled a "Jesus Freak". But I don't want to put words in his mouth so I'm not sure.
But like many of you guys said I'm a Christian and I really struggle myself with all that it entails. Nobody is perfect. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this on here, and I really hope "Soldier boys and Jesus Freaks" isn't an attack on what I base my life on.....

What the second guy took issue with was "Even though I'm a Christian I'm not perfect" as if being a Christian would make someone more perfect. It's the "even though" that rubbed him the wrong way, I'm sure. No human being is perfect so him saying "even though I'm a Christian I'm not perfect" implies that if he were a better Christian he would be perfect. Probably not Cast's intention, but that's how it comes off.

Er no, I have not misunderstood his point, if anything it is copie himself - what Cast was saying was that Christian's don't consider themselves perfect, particularly when many atheists seem to think most religious folk seem to think of themselves as perfect.

I saw an interview where Noel talked about this. I don't remember where or when was it from but I think he said he's not sure if there's a god or not so he doesn't know if he is or not religious.
I don't think christians can be offended by Noel's lyrics. He's never said something irrespectful or against any religion in his lyrics. He just writes what he thinks and there are songs that make Noel seem religious and there are some that don't. I think he doesn't know what to believe.
If anyone cares, I don't believe in God.

Yes, that's what Cast was intending. That much is clear. Read my post more carefully. The "even though" part implies (whether he meant to or not) that Christians are, as a rule or a general rule, perfect souls or "have it all figured out". Here's an example to help you understand what I'm saying. "Even though I'm an atheist/agnostic I'm generally a nice person" If you don't read that sentence and understand that it means the opposite is generally true (atheists as not very nice people) then I guess I can't help you. These threads always end horribly, though, so I will bid believer and nonbeliever a fond farewell and exit quietly.

Well I don't believe in God and am not religious in any sense. I'll leave it at that. wow, i feel much better knowing that.(that's sarcastic.) the world's too perfect bar human emotion for something greater to not be going on, if only for the imaginative/entertainment aspect alone. think about it. get with it. aloha!

A lot of people think Atheism means the rejection of a creator, which is not. Being an Atheist means not believing in a God, that's it. It's not a religion, it's not a cult, it's the exact opposite. You're free to your speculations and 'beliefs' as long as they don't negate facts, religion on the other contradicts factual science, therefore it's not the 'word of God.' Some non-theists do actually believe in a creator -not god, but manufacturer if you like- and technically, that cannot be dismissed because there is no scientific way of disproving it, or proving it for that matter, it's only a mere speculation. Geography makes people Muslims, Jews and/or Christians, facts disprove each and every one of those beliefs. A creator on the other hand is something no one has an answer for, no matter how much Dawkins tries to convince you otherwise.

Noel once stated many years ago, if I do recall correctly, that he does imagine there is some kind of higher power, but "as far as someone snapping His fingers and all of a sudden, there's a bunch of fucking planets, that's bollocks!" or something reasonably close to that.

A part of religion is striving to be the best person you can be aka striving for perfection. Any Christian who believes they are perfect should reevaluate themselves because they are clearly lying to themselves. I kind of feel like you are putting words in his mouth which isn't very fair.
