Inspired by the debate involving Fish on Trial by duty, is it?

no. no it isn't. it's frustrating to hear, since people have been saying this for 50 years now. every few years, a brand new "savior of rock and roll" is hyped up. decca said no to the beatles because guitar groups were "on their way out."

It just goes underground for bit...then it comes back around.
Playing the guitar in a rock band will always be cool.

I dunno, I'm pretty over it meself. I can't imagine another '5 guys with silly haircuts who play guitars' phenomenon coming along and genuinely exciting me. Then again, it could be because I'm 30 and I'm the one on my way out lol.

No.
Everything is cyclical. Rock will come to the forefront again. And there's some good bands in the mainstream already, but also a lot underground if you dig a bit too.

I agree that it will never die as long as it is relevant to yourself, but I think it will rise up again some day. Genres of music go in and out of fashion, so hopefully rock and roll will have its day again.
However, I'm more sceptical than ever what with the age of download - people don't buy full albums these days which is a pity and if they do obtain a full album, it's usually free off the internet.
This is hurting rock/indie/alternative/whatever bands more than ever, not so much pop acts who always place about 7 fillers and 3 killer tracks. It just seems like there's a lot of talent going to waste. Hardly anyone gets a kick out of collecting physical copies of albums anymore which is massive shame. I love to look at my mass collection of CDs and think 'yeah, that's a great great collection there', plus there's the added bonus of reading the sleeve notes and admiring the artwork. Sounds weird but downloading albums of itunes seem soulless to me and the big disadvantage to bands is the pick and choose off albums scenario of itunes. Some folk have no idea what they're missing out on.
It just seems like that more people just aren't caring about music anymore and are becoming a lot more casual in their listening habits - therefore resulting in the music dominating the charts today. Let's hope it changes.

Rock and Roll isn't dead, its just in a coma! You look at the crap thats dominating the charts at the moment, 99% of it is all generic pop/rnb/dance shite that really won't last. Rock music will soon be back, it just needs 1 new band to do something a bit unique or be good enough to capture everyones attention. As much as I personally think they sound like Green Day fans covering Blur, Liams favourite new band Brother are about the closest thing do doing that at the moment. Their album comes out in July and if it breaks through in the same way The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys did about 8-9 years ago, then I'll be happy. I just want some proper fucking music back in the charts instead of all this cheesy electronically programmed tosh...

I hate brother with a passion, , saying that though, i hope they do well, just for the indie rock scene. Though i think there are far better bands on the underground, if one band makes it through, it'll pave the way for other bands to come through.. but seriously, Brother aren't a patch on game changers like oasis, libertines, artcic monkeys!
