But it begs the question: Is the world cup about developing the game and countries, or is it about putting on the best spectacle - not mutually exclusive, of course, but I think Spain or England would be able to cope much better!
It's either that, or Eva is right and money has bought the bids.
Either way, it's greatly disappointing.

The Jokes are rolling in thick and fast.
Russia: Pickpockets, muggings at knife point, prostitution, drug trafficking and general peasantry.... it's only like an away day at Liverpool
---
The 2018 world cup has been announced that it will be held in Russia as opposed to England.
ITV 4 thought they'd commemorate this moment by showing "From Russia with love" to kick us in the balls.
---
So, 2 Oil rich countries get the world cup. Glad i'm not a suspicious person.
---
Even Audley Harrison got to the third round, England bid out at the first!
---
Doesn't matter anyway.. The worlds ending in 2012 anyway. Jokes on you Russia!
---
Roman Abramovitch has just brought a new Football team, 22 players... they cost a couple of hundred million pounds and are called FIFA.

I was kidding however... in a Brazil versus Argentina in Qatar(!!!) they did "la ola" in that game wich is the most awesome game in this world and they showed small to none excitement in that game... atlest in australia they have an actual(and growing) interest in football(or if you are yank soccer).

We, according to Blatter, had the best bid. He said our final presentation was exceptional and very good. Conversely, Russia and Qatar had the worst bids and were the most risk adverse. We get 2 votes (!!!) and Russia and Qatar win?
This points to corruption at it's finest.

We don't know what happens behind the scenes but I think that's a good thing. I mean, no doubt the 2010 and 2014 world cups mean so much more to South Africa and Brazil than it meant to Germany in 2006, for example. The world cup does not change the country's reality but it helps increasing a few segments. And god knows how much countries like mine need that kind of investiment.

It's still too soon to vote them in. Japan/Korea also just had it. It really should have gone to Australia, imo. As for 2018, it should have either gone to England or Spain/Portugal. FIFA are an utter embarrassment.

I'm not giving my opinion on this - cos I actually don't know where I stand on it - but is that really the point of the World Cup? I never knew a sporting event's direct purpose was to help develop a country (just saying)

I heard that they will de-construct them and use the material in other 3rd world countries - which is a very noble thing to do, imo. But still....

I'm glad that Holland didn't get it. Me too, it costs more than it's worth. Still, it shows it's all about the money. Russia and Qatar?! Both countries probably bribed the FIFA...

All this stuff about "developing countries" is a load of pish, did anybody seriously think England were gonna get it with people like Jack Warner involved?
Still, I'm sure Russia will put on a great World Cup. We'll no be there anyway so I couldn't give a monkeys.
