Some festive bangers: Motown Christmas A Charlie Brown Christmas Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas Phil Spector A Christmas Gift For You Elvis Wonderful World of Christmas Stax Christmas Django Rheindhardt. Stone Roses. Dub Guerilla. Snoop Dogg. Saul Williams. Thin Lizzy. Bob Marley. Children of The Bong. Rage Against The Machine. Bowie. The Soft Machine. Frank Zappa. Blondie. Then for some inexplicable reason this week I was in the mood for some jazz, jazz fusion and jazz funk: Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Stan Getz, Mahivishnu Orchestra, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Weather Report, Brand X, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker. Apparently Ascension is considered a watershed moment in Coltrane's career, where he moved from conventional melodic music to avant-garde free jazz. My wife’s review? “It sounds like a dog is being sick in my ears” 😂

Merzbow-Pulse Demon (Thanks Steven Wilson, though I disagree with Pitchfork on it being his best noise, that belongs to Angelmaker) Blind Guardian-Tales from the Twilight World (still think Tommyknockers>film)

Currently trying to get into the Beach Boys, starting with Pet Sounds. I don't know if they will ever get to the Beatles' or the Kinks' level to me, but I'm willing to let them have a go at it

"Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard?" by Lana Del Rey (2023)Wow. My passion for current music went through a big dip in 2023, with the effects of COVID still lingering in the industry and few hyped releases from my favourite artists to pull me back, but how did I overlook this? This album is fantastic. It's a seventy-minute-plus dive into God, and lust, and self-hate and self-love, and everything in-between. It delves into such intense emotions that there are times, like the surreal four-minute interlude of a ranting Christian preacher played after the seven-minute meditation on self-loathing sex and rape, where I felt almost frozen to my seat as a listener. I might be over-reacting to first real listens, but I think it might somehow have surpassed Norman Fucking Rockwell as Lana's best work, and it's one of the most memorable first dives into an album I've had in a long time. There are a couple of weaker tracks on the last leg (the hip-hop-adjacent throwbacks to her earlier stuff feel out-of-place and exposed against such gorgeous acoustic material), but as an overall work, I'm so impressed.
