I've been in a bit of a British Psychedelia dive these past few days to be ready for my radio show un thursday, and found myself really enjoying the Incredible Strings Band. EDIT: if you lads have suggestions for tunes from '67 to '69 that can be filed under the British Psychedelic category, please suggest them and I'll include them in my playlist!
Factory - Try A Little Sunshine

How should someone totally unfamiliar with Fela Kuti, except for the name and a bullet point version of his life story, start with his discography? Start with a best of such as The Best of The Black President then take it from there. His music doesn’t follow western conventions. Most “songs” are well over 15 minutes, with long instrumentals before the vocals come in (in pidgin English, so they could be understood by more people across Africa). The Best Ofs contain shorter edits so are easier to get into. Also, he didn’t release albums in the traditional sense. They were often just two long tracks, one on each side of a vinyl. So they’re almost like EPs rather than albums and there’re absolutely loads of them! So again, a best of is definitely the easiest place to start. Big tunes to start with: - Zombie - Roforofo Fight - Gentleman - Lady - International Thief Thief Enjoy! Did you give Fela a go theyknowwhatimean? 🇳🇬

I downloaded The Best of the Black President. I plan to download the second volume at some point, maybe in a few months when I've been able to digest the 2 hours 40 of the first volume.
I started off playing the comp from the top, through headphones as I went out and about on trains around Manchester. Then I realised I wasn't gonna make it past the first few songs listening that way, so now when I listen to it I have shuffle selected. Some of the jams have caught my ear, but I couldn't tell you which ones. When I have a better grip on the material I'll get back to you.

Council Skies Don't Believe the Truth
Obviously it's been a good couple of days! I wish more people would post in this thread. I guess people just don't listen to albums anymore.

What's that weird instrument in Carsambayi Sel Aldi? Loving it. Noel should do an entire album around this sound.

On a Bruce binge; Tracks has bundles of great albums in the making. Astonishing that so many gems just left on the cutting room floor. Can't wait for Volume II from his last 30 years.

Doves' "The Last Broadcast"
20 years later, this album still baffles me. CBTR is the only song that justifies being over 5 minutes long. Why the HELL was TGTF so popular? Why does Jez draw every syllable in Words out for like 15 measures? Why relegate 4 of the best songs to come out of those sessions to b-sides - you're not Oasis!
Their debut had the perfect levels of both craftsmanship and restraint.* But restraint went out the window on this one and the result is this bloating, droning mess. "Some Cities" is, for me, a far superior album and feels more like a follow-up to "Lost Souls" than "The Last Broadcast" does.
* - Noel, on the other hand, clings to restraint like a drunk clings to his paper bag.

Last listened to "Buena Vista Social Club," The Beatles' "Revolver," and Bob Dylan & The Band's "The Basement Tapes." All on vinyl. Good stuff, all.

Caustic Window, an Aphex Twin alias. Mixmaster Morris - The Morning After. He usually does ambient and chill out music, but this was a chilled out drum n bass mix from him, I really enjoyed it. The Pogues - RIP Shane. Massive Attack - Massive Bristol homecoming gig in 24? Don’t mind if I do. Tom Middleton - A Jedi’s Night Out mix. Psychedelic Salsa compilation - Why psychedelic salsa? Why not psychedelic salsa? Sasha - I used to hate trance when I was younger, but I’ve really been getting into Sasha recently. The northern exposure mixes are brilliant. Benjamin Zephaniah- RIP. Eat Static. Raja Ram chilled mix.

Yesterday was the turn of Chemicals new album ...totally loving the old school..90s to 2005 vibe on it. The Weight tune is a tunnnnnne to behold!

Any other progressive house / trance recommendations for me? Seeing that a Shpongle track was on Involver drew me to it, do you like them? I’m really enjoying the new Chems album. It manages to be simultaneously modern and nostalgic. I think I said it in another thread but their albums are like old jumpers: always nice and comfortable. Did you get their book? I got one of the limited edition versions but haven’t even had the chance to open it yet. Hopefully will get the time to dip into it over the Christmas holidays. My pile of unread music bios is getting ridiculous 📚
