What do you make of New Order’s Get Ready album? Love it. Crystal is a banger. The lyrics aren’t the best in places, but that’s true of all New Order albums! X I agree. Primitive Notion, Mean Streak, Close Range and Turn My Way are my favourites off it. Such a great band. What did you think of the new Iggy Pop and Smashing Pumpkins’ albums?

I’m very much a casual Metallica fan. I don’t mind their recent albums but know hardcore fans who hate them. Your mileage will vary depending on how much you like their later albums. I’d say it is alright for their latter day albums, like Don’t Believe The Truth was alright but doesn’t touch Oasis’s 90s albums. My main complaint is at 77 minutes it is far too long. Most songs would benefit from the editor’s scissors. X

If I were being purely objective I’d probably have to admit the Iggy Pop album is pretty average, but it’s Iggy Pop, the man made some of my all time favourite albums and is in his 70s, so I give him an easy ride and enjoy it as dumb fun. I’m a casual Smashing Pumpkins fan. I love Mellon Collie and Adore but haven’t seriously listened to anything after Machina back in 2000. I enjoyed Atum I & II. I knew they wouldn’t be like the 90s albums but wasn’t expecting them to be quite so synth led. Felt like they were growers and need more listens to appreciate. Will definitely listen to them again when part III comes out next month. X

I liked Morning Show, Regency, Johnny (sounds terrific but it’s such a dark song), and Comments. Frenzy is okay, as is New Atlantis and I liked the little 1 min bits. The rest was okay. Ready to Die, Avenue B, and Post Pop Depression are my favourite post “lust for life” Iggy albums.

Iggy’s solo discography is really inconsistent. He’s done all time classics and some utter stinkers. Just gave Avenue B a listen. Enjoyed the acoustic vibes on that one. “Her French is perfect, so is her butt.” 😂 X

I discovered the Analog Africa record label this week. Unpopular opinion: Pet Sounds it not the best Beach Boys album. On heavy rotation over the past week for me: The Lemon Twigs: Everything Harmony Early Smashing Pumpkins What’s your favourite? 🏖️ Well it a hard one really. From the early days id say Little Deuce Coupe, although Today! is close. And after Pet Sounds, Sunflower is a favorite of mine, with Holland not far. I really enjoy Pet Sounds for the revolution that it was, but always thought the actual song were not among their best melodies. Its a band with such a dense discography, hard to extract just one.

They really feel like two different bands. And then later beach boys from late 70s or early 80s which are more like every member contributing to a record without talking with each other 😂 My fav song off them is probably « Big Sur » alternate version from the feel flows compilation released in 2021. I’d recommend listening to older version of the albums though not the one re-released recently they sound weird and robotic. Not the best job unlike recent Beatles releases.

In late May I always tend to get into peak period Rolling Stones.
Exile on Main Street Sticky fingers Let it bleed Beggars banquet
Oh and the 2CD deluxe version of Some Girls has got some great outtakes on the second disc. Well worth a listen, especially to “spare parts” and “you win again.”

I need to check out Rhoda’s new album. I like the Pete McKee art. 🇯🇲 I've got pretty classic tastes: Toots and the Maytals (pass the pipe or in the dark), upsetters (dub blackboard jungle), the heptones, Alton Ellis, Desmond Dekker...
The Specials are among my favourite bands ever and I like the rest of two tone except Bad Manners which I never got.
Discovered Steel Pulse recently as well and there's everything I love about reggae in their music (late to the party I know)
