Three things:
1. I played soccer (football) for over 10 years so I know what I am talking about. 2. Offsides actually should be gotten rid of or extremely altered. I should be up to the defense to cover their man. Imagine if in American Football it was against the rules for the quarterback to throw the ball to a receiver that had gotten behind the defense?!!! Randy Moss makes a move & gets behind the defensive back then Tom Brady hits him on a bomb....nope he must be in front of the defender when the ball is thrown!!!! Bogus! 3. In this day & age instant replay should be used on goals & especially goals w/ an offsides called or major fouls (like in the box etc.). Not on out of bounds calls or ticky tack fouls. The U.S. could very well have been eliminated when in actuality they should have a 2-0-1 record.
FIX IT!!

congrats to the U.S.A England should've been eliminated. They were awful in all three matches. Hopefully they will get better for the next round. They'll need it if it's Germany they get We weren't awful against Slovenia, we deserved to win by more than 1 goal actually, Hit the post twice, Terry header, fabulous save from Gerrard's shot, Defoe missing a sitter right at the start of the 2nd half. But it did start getting very nervy in the last 10 minutes.

maybe considering the quality of the players in England's squad I was expecting for a lot more... but I'll give you that, against Slovenia you were decent enough to make it through.
Germany vs England... neither team is playing well atm but they're both capable of turning it on anytime. I hope we get a classic. but I'm guessing it'll be boring and will be decided by one goal.

I find it funny how so many of you agree w/ the offsides rule! It doesn't reward aggressive play by the offense and it results in 0-0 games! Make the defense cover the man. If they don't it's their fault! If the final game in the Cup is 0-0 w/ numerous offsides calls & or goals called back & it goes to penalty kicks all my friends that laugh at soccer (football) over here will have some merit to their disdain!! It's like deciding a tie basketball game w/ free throws!! )

Lol again.
Offside rule is fine. It would be a fucking silly game without it. There's been mathces with more than a dozen goals, so the rules not to blame for 0-0 matches. In fact, 0-0 matches can be very entertaining. Sometimes the ball just won't go in... ask Messi about it.
Penalty shootouts are exciting too. It might be unfair to one of the teams, but that's a different topic. It's got to end some time... ask Isner and Mahut who will have to play tomorrow for the third day in a row

It's like deciding a tie basketball game w/ free throws!! ) My American friends (yes, they do exist....I think....) have explained to me one of the reasons why 'soccer' doesn't do well in the US is because it tends to be low scoring. They basically tell me that US fans, in general, don't appreciate the tactics or strategy of a sport, but care more about the point total. And I tend to agree with that explanation. It's a shame, really. There's more to sport then just the final score. In any case, I can't stand people who think 0-0s are boring. Some of the most exciting games can be 0-0s. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. And it makes possible for a last second dramatic winner like you got today for the US. As for the offside rule? It's annoying because of the inconsistency and it's ever changing nature, but it's most certainty needed. NoelandMe, you do realize that the NBA banned zonal marking, right? That to me is even worse as you banned an actual defensive tactic!

And let's be clear, zone defense is no longer banned. Zone defenses were prohibited in the National Basketball Association prior to the 2001–2002 season. The NBA currently permits the use of zones; however, teams generally do not use them as a primary defensive strategy and no zone defense may feature an unguarded defender inside the free-throw lane (a violation of that results in a defensive three-second violation, which is a technical foul). Zone defenses are more common in international, college, and youth competition. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_defense

Get a grip eh man, if you played football for ten years you should realise what a ridiculous thing that is to say. Offside is integral to the game, if it wasn't there it would be like watching a bunch of kids kick a ball about in a park.
