You're only a fan if you like Little James and sing it at karaoke bars whenever possible.

No one has the right to say that someone couldn't be a true fan if they haven't seen their favorite band play live. People have their reasons for not seeing the band. Could be money, time of year, work, and thousands of other things. Just cos I didn't see The Stone Roses, The Beatles, or The La's live doesn't mean that I'm not a true fan. I don't believe in rankings of fans. Being a fan is about enjoying the music its not about how many times you've seen the band, how many bootlegs you've got, or anything else. Your a true fan if you just enjoy the music for me.

i saw then play in boston 2005 and it was mediocre. The performance was rather boring. Their studio stuff is better.
Now for Phish, it's a different story since they're a live band...

I've seen Blur six times and on two occasions, my elbows were on the stage as they played to about 250 people. Not really a fan. Love the Stones but have no desire to see them live. Umm... I'm looking for the right words to describe how I feel...

I'm looking for the right words to describe how I feel... That it's possible to see an act multiple times without being fanatical and possible to be fanatical about an act you've never seen live

Agreed. I'm def attending my first one this year because I'm lucky enough to be close to the 3 major northeast cities (Live in Philly, go to school in DC, and both cities aren't far from NYC). I'm sure no matter how many times you see them, it's always great, but I agree, the first time must have been the best. I can't wait. Not necessarily, dude. The first time is always special but not always the best gig. I first saw them on the BHN tour in 97 (Christ, that long ago!) and it was ace. But I've seen them 4 times since and a couple of the later gigs - Finsbury Park and V Festival - were better gigs, musically, than the first one I saw.
