Thought I'd be controverisal. It's not yer fault, but coming from a different culture ie. non-laddish , you've struggled to understand the band, and I think it's bloody hilarious from those Americans who think they do. The weather, football (that's soccer), politics are something you've had to live with all your life to understand what makes this band (aswell as many other bands) tick.

Remember that young american boyo in the LDSMD dvd wearing the england shirt who goes (with a peace sign) 'yeah'! Even Noel had a giggle (see band commentary)

I honestly believe this is one of the most ignorant statements you could make about music. Rhythm, harmony and melody really do not have anything to do with the social and political climate of the times. If anything, the social climate only caused many british youth to embrace the band who under different circumstances may not have.
If you are trying to say that fans in any other country than England do not take as much out of the music, i am bold enough to say that you are dead wrong. Now granted, fans in the U.S. or Canada may not fully understand Britain's social and political climate of the 90's but it does not mean that they cannot listen to the same music and draw their own inspiration from it.
Most songwriters would be willing to admit that although they have certain ideas in mind when writing, it is truly in the hands of the listeners to interpret what it really means to them. For instance, Noel was writing has early work amidst very difficult and trying times, but it does not mean that someone today could not listen to it and interpret their own unique enjoyment out of it.
I am also very interested to hear other viewpoints on this topic.

So basically you're meaning that to understand the "real" oasis you have to be just like them and go through what they've been through? This is not controversial, this is stupid. You're saying that only brit working/middle class people can understand Oasis. If american fans can't get oasis it's the same with all the fans from all around the world. I'm French and I live in the US so somehow I feel discriminated Edit: I hope you didn't upset our Webby, he aint exactly a lad

Well Britian hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. Yes you non-british people can get something out of oasis but you're not experiencing the the whole thing. Arctic monkeys are another example I'd say ye have trouble with, and they've lived through the a similar epoch as oasis

The arctic monkeys are near two decades younger than the members of Oasis. If you mean to tell me that Britain has remained exactly the same from 1990 (when Noel was writing) all the way until 2005 (when the monkeys were writing), i am confident that many on this board would wholeheartedly disagree with you.
To say that anyone outside of the island 'has trouble with' music seems to insinuate that they are somehow severly lacking in intelligence.
To use a popular culture reference, if i were to say that British citizens 'have trouble with' american movies or american television, it would be a ridiculous statement. "Oh, you shouldn't watch Iron Man, it is an American thing, you just don't understand it" or "You have trouble with Harrison Ford, you shouldn't watch Indiana Jones. You just don't understand where he is coming from, you don't know what politics he is influenced by"
Your statement sounds just as ludicrous as the previous two examples. The statement you are making is ignorant, close-minded and rather offensive to anyone with moderate intelligence.

All I'm saying my trans-atlantic buddies is that you'll never understand the real depth of each oasis song due to your geo/political situation. I could love, I dunno, Maori pop jazz AND take something from it, but I still couldn't reach it's profound depths. It aint my fault and I'm still happy.

great post to post on a US run site..... Being who your really are, living your life the way you want, battling adversity, having a positive attitude are things that you don't need to know about football and brit politics to understand.... The meaning of Oasis crosses all boundaries..... and with that attitude NO one is going to tell me I am not good enough or I don't get a band that meant more to me than most people in the last 12 years.
