Stumbling across this story about Noel Gallagher sounding off against a fellow artist has us feeling all 1996-y, when Oasis mattered, and our dad surprised us with a new Nintendo 64. But this time it isn’t fellow Brit-poppers Damon Albarn or Richard Ashcroft getting singed by Gallagher's molten tongue—it’s the untouchable Hova. Gallagher is upset because his beloved summer festival Glastonbury, the centerpiece of Europe’s summer-fest smorgasbord, has booked Jay-Z as its headlining act, and attributes lagging ticket sales (it has yet to sell out, unlike previous years) on the American rapper’s presence. “If it ain't broke, don't fix it," the-brother-who-writes-all-the-songs told the BBC. He’s upset because Glastonbury’s headliners are traditionally rock acts, and Hova riffs from his head, not from a Les Paul. “If you break it, people ain’t gonna go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. No way. No. It’s wrong.” Lucky for Jay-Z, Gallagher doesn’t curate Glastonbury (although his band headlined it twice), so his spot on the bill looks safe. Glastonbury’s co-organizer Emily Eavis hinted at something more sinister lurking beneath Noel’s words, but stopped short of blurting it out: “There is also an interesting undercurrent in the suggestion that a black, U.S. hip-hop artist shouldn’t be playing in front of what many perceive to be a white, middle-class audience. I’m not sure what to call it, at least not in public, but this is something that causes me some disquiet.” Here’s where we intercede and remind Ms. Eavis that racism and jealousy are two very different things. High School newspaper quality writing, and I'm not even talking about the subject matter.

Hip Hop = Pile Of Shite
I love how whenever someone bad mouths the black community or anything deemed to be "black", they're instantly racist. Small minded people always need excuses for their own shortcomings.

I really don't understand this controversy. This whole thing has been blown way out of proportion.
Edit: I just read the comments on the article and thought they were pretty good. "Is Ben Barna a retard?"

haha so saying that a hip hop act doesn't belong at a guitar fest is racism? I love how people throw racism out there so easily, I have been called a racist too many times to count because I think rap is shit, on the bright side, I like that noel is stirring the pot a bit. If this was closer to the album release, I would say it would be worth a thousand more records sold

I just read some of the authors other music articles : www.blackbookmag.com/tags/tag/Ben+BarnaThis is the first time he's received any feedback. The Oasis News Room and this forum opened the flood gates. I predict that they will not publish all the comments They opened a can of worms

When was the last time Noel slagged off Richard Ashcroft and The Verve? Generally his weapon of choice is the 335 dot not a Les Paul.
I wish I could write fact-less articles.

hip-hop doesn't suck, people. it's just what's popular that sucks. young jeezy does not speak out for the rest of the hip-hop nation.

Noel sampled NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" for "D'Ya Know What I Mean?" and also stated he liked that album when he was younger. Hardly qualifies him as a racist. The funny thing is... Jay-Z won't sell out Glastonbury. Also, isn't rap mainly an African-American genre? Just like rock is a mostly White genre? What's racist about thinking that the festival won't sell out purely because of lack of interest? I mean, I'm white and I like some rap. (Mainly older stuff like NWA, Dr. Dre, and Notorious B.I.G) But by and large, that music and culture doesn't speak to me as a middle-class, suburban twenty-something. Just like I'm sure it doesn't appeal to a lot of British, rock music festival goers. But it might appeal to some, just not enough to sell out a huge festival. What is exactly racist about that?

And another thing... Oasis sold out Glastonbury four years ago and will continue to sell out anywhere in England. Sooooo jealousy comes into play where?

lol Noel is a genius, he's working the press beautifully. Oasis aren't even playing Glastonbury and he's the biggest story so far. Nice one chief!

The only way Noel would be jealous of Jay Z is the fact that he's banging Beyonce. Noel could sell out Glasto just by doing a solo set headlining.

Someone should tell him Dizzee Rascal has questioned it now. Would be interesting to see what he decides Dizzee's motives are.
