The UK Conservatives and the US Republicans are seen over here as broadly similar because they are both Right wing parties. They are both parties run by old, grey, rich white men who want nothing so much as to line their own pockets. The biggest difference is that the Tories in the UK do not (thank God) campaign on religious issues. I am British and was in the US for the last election, and found it appalling that I met people who would vote for that moron Bush even though they disagreed with many of his policies (war, massive debt, tax breaks for the mega-rich etc), but felt that he was "closer to God" so they would vote for him?!!

Yeah I just dont understand that. Whats religion got to do with politics? We all know that God doesnt exist anyway, dont we people?

That is so yesterday. i beg to differ. the reprecussions of the war - regardless if it were right or wrong decision, are still going on today so i'd argue that yes there IS a reason to still give a shit about whats going on noel has never been an activist or anything but i think its good of him to at least give half a fuck btw, is voting complusory in britain?

Um, ya, according to Noel G., US REPUBLICANS = UK CONSERVATIVES and US DEMOCRATS = UK LABOR. But not really. I mean, I'm not making any value judgments either way-- but the positions of the mainstream right in the UK are the positions of the mainstream center/left in the US. UK CONSERVATIVES = US MAINSTREAM DEMOCRATS or INDIES UK LABOR = US FAR LEFT-WING DEMOCRATS UK LIBERAL DEMOCRATS = US SOCIALISTS/COMMUNISTS WAAAAY off

We know you've said it before and evidently you're saying it again, but neither time does it strike me as intelligent. (sorry)
It is trivially partially true that the Iraq war was yesterday. ONly partially though, because it was pointed out that it was still going on and so IS still an issue.
Further it IS still an issue, even if you think it has ended b/c that's part of what you judge politicians on, ie - their record or their opinons about the past

It is so yesterday cuz look, and I'll prove it to you:
You ask people in polls:
THERE IS A TERRORIST NUCLEAR THREAT, WHICH POLITICAL LEADER DO YOU WANT LEADING THE COUNTRY?
YOU ARE DYING AND YOU HAVE TO ENTRUST A POLITICIAN WITH YOUR CHILDREN, WHO'S IT GONNA BE?
YOU'RE HANGING ON A CLIFF ON TOP OF A POOL OF MOLTEN LAVA, WHICH POLITICIAN WOULD YOU TRUST TO PERSONALLY SAVE YOUR LIFE?
ANSWER:
Before Iraq: Tony Blair, Tony Blair, Tony Blair.
After Iraq: Tony Blair, Tony Blair, Tony Blair.
Hence, therefore, thus, Iraq is soooooooo yesterday.

That's not necessarily true. It depends who the GOP nominates.
I mean look, Hilary Clinton, as polarizing as she may be-- will get EVERY SINGLE VOTE that John Kerry got in 2004. I mean, you'll be hardpressed to find one John Kerry voter who will not also be a Hilary Clinton voter.
So that's 48% right there. So the question is, can and/or will the GOP nominate somebody that can get above 48%?

Without making any value judgements about it--
First of all, the overwhelming majority of people who wouldn't vote for a woman just because she's a woman would never vote for a Democrat anyway (which means they didn't vote for John Kerry last time).
Second, what few people Hilary will lose just because she's a woman, she will offset by the number of people who will vote FOR her, soley because she's a woman.
So that's that.
But as for the GOP-- the only people, it seems to me, that could both during the primaries and that would have a chance of getting above 48% are:
JEB BUSH - Who isn't gonna run (for Prez anyway).
CONDO RICE - Who would have to resign her post soon in order to get started -- so that isn't likely
ARNOLD - Unconstitutional
and uh...that's it.
GULIANI and/or MCCAIN would have a tough time winning the nomination and the other frontrunner, George Allen-- Hilary is nasty, she will cut his balls off. She will just take him apart.
