tough question - not 2 bands i would normally compare directly
and 2 of my fave bands! but as much as i like the smiths, i can't vote any other way really!
Oasis fans who want to know what influenced oasis should look little further than these two bands. without them i doubt oasis would of existed

did the person who started this thread get the question from Soccer AM by any chance?
I'd go for the Roses anyday.

THE SMITHS THE SMITHS THE SMITHS i just get the stone roses i also dont get the comparison to OASIS a few,and i sed a few of there early songs do sound like the roses.but didnt all the bands in manchester in the early 90's sound the same. and the people who say "that oasis are just the roses",had better wake up and smell the coffee. HAVE ROSES FANS HEARD OASIS CD'S u wud never here brown or squire singing or playin the music that OASIS play. and the people who say "but liam is copying ian". CRAP! liams haircut has been goin since the 1960's MOD GENERATION.i shud know bein a mod myself. even his walk is just like JIMMY'S in QUADROPHENIA. so im sorry if my comments have offened u roses fans. but roses will and never live up 2 the stature and strength of OASIS. MY NAME IS THE MOD. IM HERE ALL WEEK REMEMBER TO TIP YOUR WAITRESS GOOD NIGHT ;D

for me it has to be the smiths.
the roses could have been the band of the ninties but they did one album and spent 5 years in bed taking drugs and wasting their talent.
then they came back with a album that should have been great but was just ok.
still, they left the way open for oasis who stepped in at the last minute to fill their slot in glastonbury and the rest is history.
i think the smiths were the best band that the 80s produced and they broke up at the right time cause the last album was crap!

i'll go for the Smiths. This is just my wacky opinion, but i think most of the Stone Roses songs sound too similar to each other. Sometimes you can't tell where one song ends and the next begins.
but in the end i go for the Smiths cause their songs get stuck in my head more easily.
