we could make a countdown of any band/musician that sold some records in the past decades but if we're looking for bands who really made other people pick up an instrument and influenced their songwriting then your nominees are pretty much the best choice.. but where's elvis? i voted led zep coz most of todays hard rock/metal acts name them as the first proper inspiration tho they never even touched beatle status. nirvana would be a further candidate coz they were followed by an armada of post grunge bands from all over the world!!! (or college rock bands in the US later) grandmaster flash and micheal jackson are slightly different picks yet they "originated" hiphop and american idol/boybands ..... no leave em where they are what about abba.. there would be no will young, no ru paul, no elton john and no siegfried & roy without them

let's not forget the jazz and blues greats who influenced the bands and people mentioned in your poll. many of the great rock bands will tell you they got their starts from the blues roots ( just makes sense)

don't know really. i think they all set the standard in terms of their genre. i guess the clash and sex pistols are the starting point for most grunge bands. i guess guys like springstein, aerosmith, and the stones established rock. but its weird to see how a relativly new band like oasis, are mentioned in the bios of many new bands today as their influence.

first time i played "definitely maybe" i heard the sex pistols, t-rex, new york dolls and a sprinkling of ziggy stardust for good measure.
the fab four never crossed my mind.
live, they owed more to the sex pistols in the early days than the beatles.
liams onstage (im bored) attitude is pure johnny rotten rather than ian brown.
the punk movement changed the face of modern music in britain right up to the present day.
oh, crap! i almost forgot the profund effect "adam and the antz" also had with his ant music and two drummers years before sampling was used to get the same effect!!!

Ill go for the beatles. Although the sex pistols influence a lot of bands today, basically because they changed art, politics and generally music for ever, and all that happend after and during their first album.

Well, it was listening to Oasis when I first decided to pick up a guitar, so they are a major 'modern' influence I think. Sex Pistols influenced/influence a lot of bands, Nirvana, Oasis even (I think it was more the attitude that inspired Oasis than the music, although Noel Gallagher reckons Force of Nature sounds like the Sex Pistols )

for today's modern music i'd have to side with Metallica, The Beatles, and Radiohead. You've got Coldplay which is utter Radiohead/partial Oasis, The Strokes, Vines which are Beatlish, and Linkin Park etc type bands which feed off of simplistic Metallica riffs.
For Oasis I'd have to say The Sex Pistols, Rollings Stones, and of course the Beatles. You here Live Forever and Married with Children and you almost hear John Lennon singing, and Bring it On Down which is very Sex Pistolish.
