Steven Pressley has agreed to leave Hearts with immediate effect. Pressley, 33, revealed "significant unrest" within the dressing room under the regime of majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov in October.
He had been at Tynecastle since 1998 but was omitted from the squad for November's game at Falkirk amid reports of a plot to remove him as captain.
"I have enjoyed my time at Tynecastle enormously and will be sad to leave," Pressley told the Hearts website.
"Particularly, I would like to thank the fans for their support during my time at the club."
Pressley lifted the Scottish Cup in May following a successful season and many point to his presence in the dressing room as the main reason.
Hearts head coach Valdas Ivanauskas had been silent on the issue but had recently claimed that Pressley was the club's 'cement'.
"It has been a difficult few weeks for both the club and Steven," Ivanauskas said.
"We recognise the tremendous contribution that Steven has made both as a player and as captain at Tynecastle over the years and we wish him all the best for the future."

He will be linked to a return to Tannadice now that Craig Levein is our manager. Don't know if I want to see him back in a tangerine shirt to be honest.
He will be linked with a move to Castle Greyskull aswell I suppose seeing as you could smuggle an elephant through Rangers back 4 at the moment.

Rangers seems the obvious choice....
Wouldn't be surprised if a couple of low profile premiership clubs show interest.
