Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo a serial diver after his display in Manchester United's 2-1 win at The Riverside. Television replays showed there was no contact between Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer and Ronaldo when the winger won United a 19th-minute penalty.
"Ronaldo has a history of it," Southgate told the News of the World.
"Our keeper has done everything to get out of the way, but the lad has gone down once again."
Asked if he felt cheated by Ronaldo, Southgate said: " Yes - it's as simple as that. I cannot see it was a penalty for love nor money.
"He did it again afterwards with a free-kick against George Boateng."
After watching television replays, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the penalty was justified.
"Schwarzer is trying to avoid it, but would Ronaldo have scored? I think he would, but anyway it was a penalty kick."
It is not the first time Ronaldo's sportmanship has been questioned.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard labelled the winger "a disgrace" for his part in Wayne Rooney's sending-off at the World Cup.
Gerrard was furious when Ronaldo got involved after Rooney appeared to stamp on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.
"Sadly a dark side stains Cristiano Ronaldo's game," wrote Gerrard in his autobiography.

So he dives along with half the premiership.
Why? Because he's getting away with it.
I blame the FA, it's up to them to get rid of this by punishing it appropriately. Until they do that, of course players are going to keep diving. It helps their team, and they're not paying any price for it themselves as it stands.
(PS - I really hate diving, but firmly believe it can only be stopped from the top.... And the authorities have been a disgrace on the issue.)

don't think he dives. he's a good player but you guys need to chill when you say "he's got a history of it". Let's say that the defenders slide too much too then...

As for ronaldo I’m a man utd supporter and there is no way you can deny that he dives. however in the case of the penalty i don't think he was diving he moved to avoid the tackle and stumbled, no dive, still shouldn't have been a penalty though.

I hate the vagina but I actually think he is one of the best wingers in the world and thats coming from a Liverpool & England fan..
But his actions in terms of diving are an absolute disgrace at times, Im with Ross on the fact that i dont think when he won the pen it was a dive i think he just stumbled there so ill give him the benefit of the doubt, but a few mins later he pretty much leaped over someone's legs and somehow got a free kick for one of the most blaitent dives ever.
One thing i will say though if he carries on one day its gonna cost him and cost United, cos one day he will be hacked down in the box but the ref wont give it and he'll have only his reputation to blame.

I agree with Feck, he's doing it because he can get away with it. I'd like to see more referees booking players for diving, it really is spoiling the game somewhat.
