exactly why not give it to woosnam? he captained the team its been a shit year for british sport, same as last year (only winning the ashes gave us the obvious winner, apart from the cricket there was nothing) the best performance ive seen was Calazghe's victory against Lacy. So id probs give it to him, altho going off only 2 fights isnt exactly much...

No, lets have a look at the list Zara Phillips (Equestrian) - Are you serious? Darren Clarke (Golf) Andy Murray (Tennis) - Laughable Joe Calzaghe (Boxing) - maybe if the standard of boxing was above last order rushing Ricky Hatton (Boxing) - see above Nicole Cooke (Cyclist) - who? cant comment as i dont know him in fareness Monty Panesar (Cricket) - haha Beth Tweddle, (Gymnast) - If chris martin can probably do it, then your not that special Phil Taylor (Darts) - wanker Jenson Button (F1) stunned he was nominated, stunned Clark was the best British golfer, in what i would argue is the most most skill full sport around, in the past 12 months, he was also the strongest UK member of the Winning rider cup team, and to do that literally weeks after buring his wife i consider very very impressive I dont think you, or indeed daysleeper would be using the cynical approach of "his wife died" if it was an English sports person Its a weak list, and in my opinion Darren is the only name off it that deserves any thing

As for Nicole Cooke, who is the person i thought deserved it she On August 1st 2006, she was unveiled as the UCI's world number one women's road cyclist and on September 3rd 2006 secured the Women's World Cup, with a race in hand. and as far as nationality goes she is welsh.

And if you read my above post again you'll see i mention a Scot and a Welshman as my possible nominations, so i hardly think you can level that at me.... as for golf being the most skilful sport..... whatever! talk to the hand, sister You seem to be suggesting the lack of quality boxers in the heavyweight divison is seen throughout all the divisons.... simply not true. Sure Calzaghe is still waiting for his true career-defining fight (hopefully in 2007...) but he is an individual world champion, something Clarke is not. Anyway Zara won it..... the great british public's obsession with Royalty continues. Sad bastards. People can argue all they want - but there's no way anyone's gonna tell me those 2 didn't come first and second largely coz she's a royal, and he lost is wife.

Out of those nominated, i honestly beleive Clark desrved it, regardless of his wife
Zara? a joke but I'd still give her one
Most skillfull sport? ever played it! I do think it is the most skillfull sport because its a sport that requires alot of work, and no sport gives out personal pressure like it, i wish i could play it, maybe one day when im past it

If Clarke had won it, yes it would have been in no small part because his wife died. But, importanly, not in the way of a sympathy vote, as is being suggested above. The thing a lot of people (DS, Ross to name two ) forget is that it's "sports personality", not "greatest sports person"... In the face of adversity, Clarke showed his true character to rise to the occassion of the Ryder Cup (and played some of his best golf to boot) This was truly a great reflection on his personality, no? I'm not quite sure what Zara (or in fact any of the others) have shown in their personality this year (admittedly I don't follow most of the above, so I wouldn't really know anyway), but Clarke certainly merited being there or thereabouts ------------- I don't like the public voting thingy though. Makes it like X-factor or some of that shite. That in my opinion cheapens it.

Come on, recent winners have included people like david beckham, lennox lewis and jonny wilkinson - undoubtedly brilliant at their sports, but theyre personality free zones.... at least Zara is world champion, i give her credit for that. Lets face it though, if Prince William came 3rd in a "who can piss the furthest distance" contest outside a pub, he'd probs win that fucking award....
