Bayern Munich insist they are not interested in selling midfielder Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United. Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his interest in the 25-year-old England international, but Bayern do not want to part with him.
A statement on the German club's website said: "Bayern has not held negotiations with Manchester United.
"Furthermore, the club does not intend entering transfer negotiations regarding Owen Hargreaves."
The statement added: "Bayern Munich has officially requested Manchester United to cease pursuing its interest in Owen Hargreaves."
Hargreaves has made his desire to play for Manchester United in the Premiership clear.
He said: "I've had a fantastic time in Munich but from the 2006 World Cup my situation has changed."
Ferguson has been keen to acquire the services of Hargreaves and said: "We have been trying to negotiate with Bayern Munich for quite a while now.
"The boy has said he would like to join United. We would like to have him here."
Hargreaves starred for England last Wednesday as he helped the team to a 4-0 win in a friendly against Greece.
Bayern, however, are reluctant to let Hargreaves go after losing midfielder Michael Ballack to Chelsea in the summer.
Ferguson said the move was now in the "capable" hands of chief executive David Gill and added: "He's doing his best.
Ferguson was remaining hopeful that a deal could be done. He said: "You can never be confident but we are hopeful. We are dealing with a big club in Bayern Munich.
"The relationship between the two clubs has always been good.
"We would have preferred Ruud van Nistelrooy to join them [instead of Real Madrid] because that may have helped us with the Hargreaves situation.
"That wasn't to be. But hopefully we can get something done."
Hargreaves seems determined to seize on his raised profile in England following his combative and tough-tackling displays during the World Cup.
He was seen as England's player of the tournament and continued his impressive rise in the international ranks in the friendly against Greece in new manager Steve McClaren's first game in charge.
Hargreaves has been at Bayern since moving to the club from Canada as a 16-year-old in 1997.
He helped Bayern to the Champions League crown in 2001 and has also won four Bundesliga titles with the club.
His inclusion in former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup raised eyebrows after he had failed to establish himself since his international debut against Holland in August 2001.
But he was in impressive form in Germany and starred when he played against Sweden and Portugal.
Hargreaves has been linked with numerous Premiership clubs over recent years, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Middlesbrough.

now after all this time people in England start to like him..... anyway, he did a good job in the WC and has been very important for Bayern in previous years but if he's declared he wants to play in the Premier League the team should let him go. having a player with little or no motivation at all in the team is a big mistake

and has been very important for Bayern in previous years He's never been a regular for Bayern.... He had a couple of good games for England, after some really shocking ones, and all of a sudden he's worth £17m? Wouldn't mind having him in my squad, but don't think he's worth over £5m

Bayern threaten to report Man Utd
Bayern Munich have claimed they will report Manchester United to football's world governing body Fifa unless they end their pursuit of Owen Hargreaves. United have confirmed they want to sign the 25-year-old midfielder, who has also stated his desire to join them.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has warned United to cease their interest or "we will turn to Fifa".
"A club may only contact a player when the club holding his contract agrees to it," he told German newspaper tz.
England international Hargreaves has a contract with Bayern running until 2010.
And Bayern have already made it clear they expect it to be honoured.
The German club's general manager Uli Hoeness said: "Hargreaves is well advised to keep quiet.
"Otherwise I will get very angry and that will not be good for him. I can't understand that after two discussions he is still forcing the issue."
Hargreaves was omitted from Bayern's side for the Bundesliga match with Bochum on Sunday after talks with the club.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to bring the player to England and is thought to be willing to pay £17m.
But Hoeness added: "He won't be released under any circumstances. He needs to accept the decisions of those above him and show some respect."
Ferguson has already admitted Bayern have so far resisted their attempts to add Hargreaves to the summer capture of Michael Carrick, saying: "We are trying hard but Bayern are proving very stubborn and resistant, which I can understand."
A Bayern statement said they had not held negotiations with United and asked for the English side to cease pursuing the player.
Hargreaves has been at Bayern since moving to the club from Canada as a 16-year-old in 1997.
He helped Bayern to the Champions League crown in 2001 and has also won four Bundesliga titles with the club.
He seems determined to seize on his raised profile in England following his combative and tough-tackling displays during the World Cup and an impressive performance against Greece in coach Steve McClaren's first game in charge.
